LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 6

By: JUNITO C. COMEROS, Master Teacher I

I. Objective:
1. Find the percentage, rate or base in a given problem/situation. (M6NS-IID-142)

II. Subject Matter:

References: Curriculum Guide in Mathematics 6, 21st Century Mathletes, Teacher’s Guide in
Mathematics 6
Materials: plastic ball, charts, scissors, cartolina, pictures, glue, envelopes, bond papers, labels,
marking pens, illustrations, laptop, speaker, whiteboard marker, eraser

III. Procedure:

1. Motivation
Let the students play the “Pass-the-Ball” game. As the music plays, let the students pass
the ball clockwise. As it stops, the one who holds the ball will tell the decimal to be shown by the
teacher if it is in percent form and vice versa.
35% 0.04 129% 0.025
%
8% 5.34 0.006 75%

2. Presentation and Discussion

Presentation
Post the problem below:

Mark’s daily allowance is ₱40.00. He spends ₱18.00 for snacks. What

percent of Mark’s allowance is spent for snacks?

Ask the following follow-up questions:

1. What is the name of the person/boy in the problem? (Mark)
2. How much was his daily allowance? (₱40.00)
3. How much did he spend for snacks? (₱18.00)
4. Why is it that he spent only ₱18.00? (answers may vary)
5. If you were given ₱40.00 as your allowance, (answers may vary)
how much would you spend for snacks? Why?

Discussion
1. Tell the pupils that the problem above involves percentage, rate and base.
2. Explain to them the meaning of percentage, rate and base.
 Percentage- is the number or amount that represents a part of a whole
 Rate- is the number compared to 100. It usually has a percent sign (%) or the
word “percent” with it
 Base- is the number that represents the whole or entire amount.

3. Let the pupils identify which is the percentage, rate and base in the problem.
4. Ask them which among the three elements is missing.
5. Discuss to them how to solve for percentage, rate and base using the Techan’s Triangle.

The Techan’s Triangle can help us remember the three

formulas:

P= B x R R= P B= P
B R

6. Guide them to solve the problem presented above using the formulas.
For rate,

R= P
B
= ₱18.00
₱40.00
= 0.45 change to
percent
R = 45%

So, Mark’s snacks is 45% of his daily allowance.

7. Do the same in getting the percentage and the base.

3. Application
Note: This time carousel brainstorming will be applied.

1. Let the pupils answer the following:

STATION 1 STATION 2

From the statement above: From the statement above:

a. What is missing? a. What is being asked?
b. Solve and show your solution. b. Solve and show your solution.

STATION 3 STATION 4
Give four events or real life
From the statement above: situations in which our knowledge
a. What is being asked? in percentage, rate and base
b. Solve and show your solution. can be applied.

1. Divide the class into appropriate number of groups.

2. Assign everybody in the group with a role or a task.
3. Distribute activity sheets to each small group. Allow each group to discuss and write their
answers on a big sheet.
4. After four minutes, a signal by the teacher should be done. Each group will rotate to the
next station.
5. Continue the rotation until each group has the opportunity to work in all stations.
6. Let the students post their answers on the board.
7. Let the reporters report their answers to the class.

2. The teacher will comment/process the answers of the students. He will then give the score of
each group.

3. Ask the pupils about their arguments in every station and how they were able to come up with
the final answer.

4. Employ 5-minute Q and A time. Let anybody from the class ask question/s to anyone. The
questions should be related to the topic discussed. Encourage students to ask questions that
would require higher order thinking skills.

4. Generalization
1. Ask: What is percentage? Rate? Base?
2. What are the formulas in getting the percentage? Rate? Base? What figure/illustration that can
help us easily remember these formulas?
3. In what situations do our knowledge in percentage, rate and base can be applied?
IV. Formative Assessment
Analyze and answer each of the following questions. Show your solution.

1. Find 75% of 80.

2. What percent of 90 is 15?
3. 22 is 40% of what number?
4. 12 is what percent of 50?
5. What number is 30% of 60?

V. Enrichment Activity
Dyad
Let the pupils choose a partner and have them answer the following the next day.
1. Find 40% of 60.
2. What percent of 20 is 17.
3. 12 is 10% of what number?

Name: ___________________________________ Grade & Section: ____________________

Analyze and answer each of the following questions. Show your solution.

1. Find 75% of 80.

2. What percent of 90 is 15?

3. 22 is 40% of what number?

4. 12 is what percent of 50?

5. What number is 30% of 60?
