About the Kelly Kan™

Used correctly, the Kelly Kan™ helps keep crews dry and work-
floors safe during connections and tripping operations. The Kelly
Kan™ is a modern solution that replaces the old mud bucket. It
weighs 27 pounds and requires one person to operate.

Unpacking
Your Kelly Kan™ has been shipped to you in one box.
Carefully unpack and, referring to packing list, make sure
that you have received 1 Kelly Kan™, 1 set of Top Plates,
and 2 sets of Kelly Kan™ seals, as illustrated in Figure 1a
(and Figure 1b if you have also ordered the optional Kelly
Kan™ Seal Kit). If any of the parts are missing, please
contact our 24-hour customer service line at 780.414.6083 Figure 1a
or toll free in North America by dialing 1.800.840.2877.

Kelly Kan™ Seals - The Kelly Kan™ Seals are sized to

fit the tool joint diameter of your drill pipe. Under special
circumstances, you may also seal on the pipe (4” or smaller),
collar or tube diameter. To change seals, simply slide them in or
out as illustrated in Figure 1c. No tools are required. A variety
of quick-exchange seals (size 2” to 8”) allows the Kelly Kan™ to Figure 1b
fit any string in its entirety: kelly, drill pipe, drill collar, test tools,
core barrels, service tubing, or casing. The seals remain supple
in extreme cold temperatures and are resistant to oil, as well as
other chemicals (see table to the left for sizes and part numbers).

02
Kelly Kan™ Top Plate - The top plate is designed to fit above the tool joint of drill pipe or in
the saver sub groove - to ensure ideal Kelly Kan™ placement. Use the table on the first page to
determine the correct size top plate for your drill pipe. The correct top plates must be used on all
applications excluding heavy-weight and drill collars. The top plates are easily interchanged by
rotating the six bolts as illustrated in Figure 2a. Then slide and remove top plates as shown in
Figure 2b.

Using the Kelly Kan™

Set the stump low to minimize bent pipe and splashing as illustrated in Figure 3a. Lock the Kelly
Kan™ securely on the tool joint. Hoist the pipe slowly. The Kelly Kan™ will control/redirect all fluids
down through the rotary table bushings/slips and into the Upper Katch Kan™. The Kelly Kan™
reaches optimal effectiveness when used in conjunction with the Splash Guard™ (see last page).

Note: When handling the Kelly Kan™ use handles to lift as shown above. Optimum placement of the Kelly Kan™
is 2” above slips

Maintenance

Guidelines

i. Check the Kelly Kan™ to make sure the rig crew is using it properly.
ii. Check the seals to make sure there are no rips or tears. If the seals are damaged, replace
them before next Kelly Kan™ application.
iii. Clean the Kelly Kan™ constantly to make sure it works properly at all times.

Grooves Tongue

In order to achieve full performance from the Kelly Kan™, regular cleaning may be necessary. For
instance, deposits may build-up in the tongue and groove joints of the Kelly Kan™; affecting ability
to close and seal properly.

05
Kelly Kan™/Splash Guard™ Combination
Working in conjunction with the Kelly Kan™, the Splash Guard™ is highly effective at eliminating
splashing and flooding of the rotary table. This is achieved by the guard controlling the downward
re-direction of drilling fluid to the Upper Katch Kan™. The Splash Guard™ also keeps hoses and other
foreign objects out of slip handles/bushings while they are rotating.

Another added bonus is that this product flexes down so no extra effort is required when pulling or
inserting slips.
