a. From the given data, plot the percentage of insects affected versus the natural
logarithm of the dose.

a. Convert the data to a probit variable, and plot the probit versus the natural logarithm
of the dose. If the result is linear, determine a straight line that fits the data. Compare
the probit and number of insects affected predicted by the straight-line fit to the actual
data

First, the probit was obtained from Table 2-4. For values that are not in the table,
interpolation was carried out. Then, the graph below was plotted.

Log (Dose)

An equation of straight line was obtained. This is shown on the graph. From the equation, the
predicted probit can be obtained by inserting the value of x, where x is the log of dose. To
calculate the predicted percentage affected, interpolation was done again using Table 2-4.
Then the predicted no of insects affected was calculated. The values are shown in the table
below.

From the table above, it can be seen that the predicted probit is close to the actual probit with
the exception of 7.7 mg/l dose where the actual probit is 6.07 while the predicted probit is 5.85.
The predicted number of insects affected increased from 44 to 46 and 24 to 25 for dosage
10.2 and 5.1 mg/l respectively. For readings 3.8 and 2.6 mg/l, the actual and predicted number
of insects affected are the same which are 16 and 6. At 7.7 mg/l, the predicted number of
insects affected is 39 which is lower than the actual value which is 42.
