Midterm Examination

1. Compute the attenuation due to rain using Crane Rain Attenuation

method of a 7.125 GHz, 20-kilometer terrestrial microwave link in Luzon
if the rainfall intensity is exceeded 0.01 % per year if:
a. The signal is vertically polarized
b. The signal is horizontally polarized

2. Compute the attenuation due to rain using ITU-R Rec. 530 Rain
Attenuation method of a 7.125 GHz, 20-kilometer terrestrial microwave
link in Luzon if the rainfall intensity is exceeded 0.01 % per year if:
a. The signal is vertically polarized
b. The signal is horizontally polarized

3. A line-of-sight communication system is to be established between

Baliuag University and Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology.
Under normal atmospheric condition, the two sites were 48 km away
from each other. An electronics engineering firm was contracted to put
up the said link with the following design parameters:

Fresnel ratio 0.6

Frequency 8 GHz
Tree Growth 15 m
Elevation ASL of BU 20 m
Elevation ASL of NEUST 30 m
Tx Power 25 dB
RSL |– 62 dB|
The designers used a transmission line with 2 dB/100m of attenuation
and decided to use the coefficient of reflection of 0.3. They also found
out that there are two significant obstructions exist inside the microwave
path. One of 25 meters which is 30 km from the first site and another 30
m which is 10 km from the second site. For the rain attenuation, it was
also decided that 0.01% of the time will be considered for them to use kV
= 0.00395 and αV = 1.31 under the operating frequency. All other losses
were indicated to be 2.8 dB/site.

As one of the design engineers of the firm, you are tasked to compute
for the heights of the antenna, with the base of the towers to be 6 meters
from the radio room for both sites, as well as the antenna diameters.
Correct all of your calculations to three decimal places.
