First Baptist Church

Discover the Love of Christ

Frostproof, Florida July 2019

Dear Church Family,

In a couple of weeks we will be engaged in the ministry called Vacation

Bible School. For over 120 years God has used VBS to impact millions of
people around the world for eternity. In 1898, Virginia Hawes noticed that
after public schools closed for the summer, the streets in a section of New
York City’s East Side were filled with “idle and unruly” children. So she
opened, in a beer parlor, what has become known as the most prominent
precursor of today’s VBS. Mrs. Hawes said, “We felt that the Bible is not
taught in homes as it used to be, nor as it should be, and it is not taught in
the public schools. So, we opened a school in which we made the Bible our
only textbook.”

As I reflect on that, it is really not that much different than it is for us in

today’s world. We are in a crisis of evangelism because churches are not
doing a good job of reaching their communities. Recent research tells us
that 48% of us are not inviting our unchurched friends to an event or a
service at church; 61% of us are not sharing our faith.

Think about this: not only are we in a crisis of evangelism, children and
adults are in a crisis of loneliness and isolation. Kids are on their phones,
tablets, and devices. They photograph their food, friends, themselves, and
post everything going on in their lives. Experiences with real people and
social relationships take a back seat to the social media world. Thus we
Inside this issue:
have lonely kids and adults. God made us to live in community. VBS
provides a whole week of interaction and we have the opportunity to share 1

Jesus.

VBS remains a great tool for evangelism and discipleship. Thanks to Vacation Bible School 2

everyone committed to serve in some capacity. Please be praying. It will be

a fun time!

Zoom in! Focus on Jesus!

But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,
and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:31 (CSB)
Here are several specific things you can pray for as we prepare for Vacation Bible School!
1. Pray for the teachers and volunteers. Ask God to receive their hours of preparation as a pleasing
offering and for the Holy Spirit to be at work in and through them.

2. Pray for the children and the families they represent. Ask God to begin preparing their hearts to
respond to the Good News they will hear at VBS. Pray for their physical safety and emotional well-
being during the week.

3. Pray for those who are unchurched in your community who will join your church for VBS. Ask
God to soften your own heart and the hearts of your congregation to welcome, serve, and build
relationships with everyone who enters yours doors.

4. Pray for those who will share the gospel during VBS and those who will follow-up with
children, students, adults, and families. Ask the Holy Spirit to give them clarity, guidance, and
discernment.

WE are wild about VBS! Be sure to register for IN THE WILD, Amazing Encounters with Jesus! Go to our
