Lesson/topic focus: 3D English Unit 9- Poetry

OBSERVATION
Introduction
The lesson begins with a prior knowledge activity- Comprehension checking questions to find out what the students
already know about poems.
- Students are given the option to respond to the questions- ‘raise your hand if you know’……
o Will sometimes use pop sticks to pick students at random
- Encourage students to brainstorm and share their ideas- moving students to comprehend and give the answer
you want without specifically asking the question. Gradually leading them towards their own thinking and
comprehension of an answer
Begin with the basic ideas- focus on identifying the syllables- clapping, snapping counting
- Moving towards identifying the syllables in a Haiku poem
- Haiku- understand the 5.7.5 principle
- Syllables= flow of the poem
- Moving towards identifying the theme of the poem
We Do
Begin by starting as a whole class- students are being introduced to an unfamiliar topic- working together allows them
to feel support
- Students not down the key points on the board
Introducing the concept of syllables- using a variety of strategies to count out the number of syllables in a word

- Read my Haiku poem about nature- what do you notice
- Create a Haiku about Miss Tracy
Moving towards identifying the theme of the poem
Doing it together if students aren’t confident- gradual release of responsibility
- Making sure all students understand before moving on
- Using table leaders to collect worksheets
- Correcting if they don’t understand- more explicit teaching instruction from the teacher
- Not understanding= everyone goes through it together- identifying the common mistakes and building upon it

Behaviour management/ Reward system


- Stickers are given to individual student’s when they participate in class by providing a response
- Hands on heads when finished
- Point system working in table group colours (red, orange, yellow, green and blue)
- Number countdown out loud to finish work “You have 30 seconds”
- If students aren’t responding or are not ready to move on points are taken down

Attention/ focusing strategies


- Clapping
- Count down
- Eyes on me, eyes on you
- Table colours to gain attention
