SIX SIGMA AWARENESS TRAINING

INTRODUCTION
Six Sigma is a rigorous and disciplined methodology that uses data and statistical analysis to measure
and improve a company's operational performance by identifying and eliminating "defects" in
manufacturing and service-related processes. Commonly defined as 3.4 defects per million opportunities,
Six Sigma can be defined and understood at three distinct levels: metric, methodology and philosophy
Many of the tools used for Six Sigma have proved useful in conjunction with TQM and other process
improvement methodologies. While some of the tools are new to process improvement activities, it is
important to note that Six Sigma provides a new way to use existing tools. It is the combination of tools
and the way they are employed that gives Six Sigma its competitive advantage.

Results
Six sigma is about results. It is a customer-centered, systematic, data-driven way of doing things better.
Six sigma develops people, and puts tools and responsibility into their hands, It empowers and encourages
them to make useful changes.

Attacks Waste
Six sigma attacks waste through projects that support organization goals. Projects, not training while
they are doing their first project, but the training is only a means to an end. If you do real six sigma,
rather than one of the many “sorta-six sigmas”, and do it right, it will dependably produce large gains.

Improves and Reduces

Six sigma applies to business process improvement, production process improvement, and to product
design improvement. It works in finance, marketing, HR, sales, production, design, supply chain
management, and all other parts of an organization. It routinely increases customer satisfaction, reduces
cycle times, reduces errors, reduces production costs, and increases revenue.

Opportunity
How big is your opportunity? In most organizations, it is huge. Think of everything your organization
has to “inspect”, or review. Think of everything that gets done over, the costs of correcting errors that
escape to your customers, and the cost of excessive cycle times. These are all waste. Well-run organizations
frequently have “quality costs” as high as 35% of total cost.

“Be a yardstick of Quality. Some people aren't used to an environment

where excellence is expected.”
-Stephen Jobs
Young founder of Apple Computers
