Pumping Stations have been planed to be installed at the two intake locations on the

left bank of river Subarnarekha near Dherachera and Kalrui respectively at

approximately 500 m apart and three other intermediate / terminal lifting station at

the prominent discharge locations of the conveyance main spreaded over a total

length of 36 KM upto the terminal lifting station at Salua from the common intake

point at Dherechera. The intermediate pumping stations with suitable capacity

collector wall shall be located inbetween the terminal station and common intake

point with one at Kultikri 12 KM from the common intake point at Dherachera and

the other at Hatigeria further 11 KM from Kultikri.

The intake Pump House shall be provided at the specified locations over the river

intake well of ‘D’ shaped double compartment construction to facilitate common use

of surface / subsurface water from the single well in application with the separate

group of pumps as required for the purpose in a common Pump House.

All the pumping station shall be in operation for a duration of 20 hrs. a day for

supplying the required net flow of clear water through the conveyance main

including the intermediate outflow required from the respective offtake terminal at

the lifting stations. Off take terminals have also been considered to be provided at all

the intermediate / terminal stations suitably for appropriate distribution of water to

the respective authorities / agencies as indicated in the Table – A1

The system will cause intermittent increase / reduction of flow at various sections the

conveyance main from the intake to terminals which has been taken care of by

resizing of the conveyance main/branch at the respective input / off take terminal

points at or near the intake / intermediate / terminal pump stations.

The layout and location of pump houses has been shown in Drawing No. 1 and enclosed
Schematic Drawings of the respective pump houses as indicated below:

1. Layout of the proposed river intake Pumping Station 1 & 2 at Dherachera and Kalrui.

2. Layout of the proposal 1st intermediate lifting station at Kultikri.

3. Layout of the proposal 2nd intermediate lifting pump section at Hatigeria.

4. Layout of the proposed Terminal Pump Station at Salua.

Mechanical design of the pumping station:

General:

The design of the Raw / Clear Water pumping machinery for the stations have been

carried out considering daily total requirement of net raw / clear water flow of 15

MGD plus 10% extra for wastage i.e. 3750 m 3/hr (1040 LPS) including all off-take

discharge from the inter-mediate / terminal lifting stations in order to maintain the

requisite quantum of supply at the respective terminal ends as indicated in Table A1.

These demands of clear water flow from the intake / intermediate / terminal stations

shall be met by running suitable no of pumps at the intake and intermediate / terminal

stations corresponding to the combined total discharge of the intake stations and

respective off-take discharge at the intermediate / terminal stations in the following

manner:-

1. Full working capacity of the pumps at each intake station @ 1875 m 3/hr (520
LPS)

2. Full working capacity of pumps at the inter mediate station – 1 towards:

i) Branch discharge of PHED, West Bengal @ 250 m3/hr ( 70 LPS).

ii) Common discharge at the down stream main leading to inter mediate
station 2 @ 3500 m3/hr (970 LPS)
3. Full working capacity of pumps at the inter mediate stations 2 towards:

i) Branch discharge of PHED, West Bengal @ 250 m3/hr (70 LPS)

ii) Common discharge at the down stream main leading to terminal station
@ 3250 m3/hr (900 LPS)

4. Full working capacity of pumps at the terminal lifting station towards:

i) Combined branch discharge of Rly & Industry supply @ 1750 m3/hr

(486 LPS)

ii) Branch discharge of IIT @ 1000 m3/hr (278 LPS)

iii) Branch discharge of Air base supply at Kolaikunda @ 375 m3/hr (104
LPS)

iv) Branch discharge of Army base at Salua @ 125 m3/hr (35 LPS)

While designing the pump sets and the duty points, necessity for stand by pump has been

considered to negotiate any emergency situation due to pump break down or repair down

time etc. So that station flow requirement at the respective branch / main distribution are not

hampered by any means. Scope of having adequate flexibility in application of pumps under

various working conditions without any sacrifice to the station flow requirement, have also

been considered for optimizing the number of pumps depending on the flow capacity of the

branch / main distribution.

Working and stand by combination of pumps in a distribution group has been considered

such that minimum one working pump shall be provided for any distribution branch upto

375 m3/hr (104 LPS) and min 2 working pumps shall be provided for any other distribution

branch or common main having discharge capacity 500 m3/hr (139 LPS) and above to take

care of widely varying flow condition in the major distribution branch main from the

intermediate / terminal lifting stations as and when required.

Capacity design and regulation of flow to the collector well / U/G storage reservoir:

Collector wells of the intake pump house has been designed based on 30 minutes detention

period for the total station flow capacity so as to ensure uniform and steady flow to the VT
pumps after initial draw down in the well, at a velocity below 1 m/sec at the suction inlet,

there by ensuring operation of pumps free from vortex, cavitation and vibration ultimately

leading to extended longevity.

U/G storage reservoir for the intermediate / terminal lifting stations have also been designed

based on 1 hr detention period for the total station flow capacity such that adequate steady

depth of water could be ensured for flooded suction to the dry pit pumps causing there by

trouble free and efficient operation of the pumps.

Isolation valves shall be provided for regulating the flow to the common intake well of the

intake station as well as to the each and individual dry pit pump from the U/G storage

reservoir of the intermediate / terminal lifting station. Sluice valves with long spindle drive

and manual head stock gearing arrangement shall provided with all the Radial Collector inlet

port inside the well for controlling the inflow to the well and shall be operated from the

lower tier below the pump floor as and when necessary to ensure easy maintenance and

break down repair of the pumps in the well.

Sluice valves shall also be provided for regulation of flow to the dry pit pumps at the

intermediate / terminal lifting station. These valves shall be electric actuator driven and shall

be fitted with all the individual dry pit pumps for isolating the pump suction from the

reservoir water as and when necessary to facilitate easy maintenance and breakdown repair

of the pumps at the pump floor level well below the minimum water level of the reservoir.

V.T. Pumps:

The pumps shall be vertical turbine type, solid shaft, flange mounted motor driven. Installed

capacity of the pumps for each intake station has been designed with 2 pump working and 1

pump as stand by. The pumps shall be L.T. Motor driven with FASD / soft starter.
The pumps shall be multistage design with modified radial / mixed flow character istics and

discharge co-axial with the shaft. The pumps shall have semi open impellers with self water

lubrication and discharge head assy shall be suitable for above floor discharge.

Centrifugal Pump:

The pumps shall be horizontal, solid shaft, foot mounted, motor driven centrifugal pump.

Installed capacity of the pumps lave been so designed that the total pumps at the

intermediate / terminal station for the respective distribution group shall be provided

including working and standby. Working and standby combination of pumps at the

intermediate / terminal station shall be as indicated in Table A1. The pumps shall be HT/LT

motor driven with DOL / FASD Starter.

The pumps shall be horizontal / radial split casing, multistage design, side / end suction and

side delivery type with radial / mixed flow impeller.

Pipe lines & Accessories:

The velocity in the pump delivery branch station shall be restricted with 2.5 m/sec and that

in the conveyance main shall be limited to 1 m/sec ever under highest flow condition. Each

pump delivery shall have one Reflux valve to prevent water hammer due to backflow during

sudden slopping / power failure etc. each pump branch line shall also be fitted with one

Butterfly Valve and Dismantling joint for additional protection to the back flow and

providing easy dismantling facility of the internal piping system of the internal piping

system at the pump house for maintenance and repair. Butterfly valves to the pipe lines of

600 mm dia and above shall be of electric actuator driven type. RE joints shall be provided

with the pump delivery branch to minimize the effect of vibration on the supporting

structure.

Suitable size Butterfly valve at the common header and pressure release valve at the

beginning of the rising main shall be provided as necessary.

Air release valve shall also be provided to the rising main in addition to the individual pump

at the discharge head.

Pump common header shall be generally multipices construction and radial tee / ‘Y’ joint

design and all the pump delivery branches excepting the further one in a group shall be

connected across with the common header leaving its rear end to connect with the further

pump delivery branch and front end with the rising main.
