1. The teacher will going to show a picture of a marketplace.
Direction: The picture below shows a daily scene in the marketplace. We can see people
having transactions with one another. Encircle the people who are offering products or services to
sell, and put a check across those who are buying these products and services.
2. Read the given selection. Then, complete the given concept map below.
Selection 1
James grew up in a poor family where he learned the importance of hardwork. When
he was in high school, he sold newspapers and cigarettes to help pay for his schooling.
James learned he was good at woodworking in his TLE classes, and realized he
wanted to make it his profession someday. After high school, he was not able to go on to college
because of lack of money. Instead, he was obliged to work in a furniture company.
The company where he worked closed when James was 20, and he found himself
suddenly out of work. Instead of applying in another company, he decided to start his own furniture
business. He raised money from his savings and through loans.
To save his limited capital, James did not hire any help. He budgeted his money very
carefully, spending most of it on good tools and materials. He worked long hours creating clever
designs for his furniture and looking for better ways to build them.
James started selling his designs to hotels, restaurants, and resorts. They liked his
work so much, and soon, orders began pouring in and his business grew.
Today James is the owner of one of the most succesful companies in the country.

When Marie was in high school, she attended horticulture classes and eagerly learned how
to identify plants and their requirements. She was also very interested in the soil sciences, pest
control, and other things related to plants.
In college, Marie continued pursuing her interest in plants, especially in flowers. She
worked as florist after graduation, and applied her knowledge and creativity for the company she
was working in.
As an employee, Marie saw the demand for professional care for indoor plants, which the
shop did not offer. When she was 23, she decided to take a part time job as a freelance interior
plants consultant. It was a new and risky field, but she was very happy to have discovered it.
Marie serviced her customers during her free time and held on to her regular job to help
fund her venture. It was not easy for her establish a good reputation at first, but she believed in her
skills and the potentials of her business.
Today, Marie has five employees who assist her with the bulk of the workload she gets from
big firms. Shee keeps her clients satisfied by providing them with hands-on, peronalized services.
