Some of us are not fully conscious of our reality. Our instinct for happiness leads us to
believe either that our sincere efforts are enough… or that it really does not matter if we
take a break basking in our habits or comfort zones.
But the stark reality is that a battle is going on in my soul right now. It may at times be a
minor skirmish, maybe a silent but persistent struggle, or at times a fierce, raging battle.
This is what today’s Second Reading tells us: Christ freed us to make us really free… do
not submit again to the yoke of slavery. This is our nature, which brings us to a
permanent need for choosing between several (more than two!) voices: The Holy Spirit,
the devil, our family and friends, our memories, our imaginations, our passions and
needs, our obligations.
Who will I listen to? This is a powerful and realistic way of raising the issue of my
spiritual effort.
I remember a young man saying to me regarding his decision for his own future: “God is telling me that I have to dedicate my life to help and
accompany that young lady in her spiritual path.” But few weeks before our conversation, several persons had observed and denounced his
improper conduct with that young lady.
Are we able to distinguish the voice of the Holy Spirit from the whisperings of the devil or the well-intentioned but misled thoughts of our own
mind?
I need to examine myself to see if my thoughts and motivations, or that inner voice, are God-centered or self-centered. How can I tell the
difference? It is enough to ask myself a key question: Are these thoughts separating me from some people in some way? Or, if you
prefer: Is this voice pushing me to keep something or someone only for myself? If I ask myself this question before Jesus, I will
find myself winning this battle for my soul and, at the same time, becoming more like Christ, enjoying the freedom that Christ came to give me
as the first fruit of prayer.
This starts with the Recollection of our mind, involving the discernment that leads us to say NO to the self-centered thoughts and to say YES to
those which have the flavor of God. Saint Paul masterfully summarizes these two actions: We demolish arguments and every pretension that
sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Cor 10:5).
Both the Galatians and also ourselves bite, devour and tear each other to the point of risking to destroy one another in many different forms,
particularly through the attachment to our judgments and desires and this is precisely the sad content of worldly freedom, leading to each of us
to do what we like and the way we like, even finding “spiritual” excuses for it. We allow ourselves to be deceived by some ideas and intentions
and we become slaves of the flesh, a word that not only mean the sexual lust but all the forces that lead to evil, including our manipulation
of the Law, thus forgetting the only commandment that counts for a Christian: the love of the brethren.
But Jesus came to bring fire to the earth (Lk 12:49) and today’s Gospel is crystal clear in this respect and gives us several didactical examples.
Even in the First Reading we learn that, when he was called, Elisha kills two oxen, burns the tools of his old profession and, on this fire, roasts
the meat that he distributes to everyone present. This gesture is significant and mimics the advice which Christ’s gave to his genuine followers:
sell all that you possess and give it to the poor.
Fire is the image most used in the Jewish tradition to express God’s intervention: God is a devouring fire, says Moses to the people (Dt 4:24),
denoting the purification brought about by his intervention. Elisha burns the tools for plowing, symbol of the profession he had done up to that
moment, and decides to enter into the new life to which Elijah called him.
We fear that God’s fire may consume much of our securities, realities in which, perhaps for years, we have placed our trust and our hopes, that
he may burn all that, until now, has given meaning to our lives. But He makes the opposition between the flesh and the spirit more explicit,
perceptible and noticeable.
Making a decision for Jesus and His way of life is frightening for us. We feel discouraged and afraid to commit ourselves to Jesus for fear that
we cannot live up to the challenges of discipleship. Certainly, humanly speaking, it is difficult to give up our personal comfort and control. It is
painful to be separated from our loved ones and families. It is scary not knowing what lies ahead of us each day.
Of course, Jesus is giving us today important clues to discern and appreciate religious vocation, and we can benefit from his encounters with
three would-be disciples to learn how to be faithful to our mission each and every day of our road to holiness.
Firstly, Jesus rebukes those who were already his disciples, James and John, because they were ready to call down fire from heaven to reduce
the Samaritans to ashes, because they opposed them. These brothers received then from Jesus the little sympathetic nickname of Sons of
Thunder, probably as a permanent reminder that we cannot respond with aggression, but only with love.
If someone attacks us using lies, deception, violence, we can only answer by invoking upon him the blessings of God. The only fire that comes
down from heaven is the Spirit who transforms the hearts of people. This is the fire that Jesus came to bring upon the earth (Lk 12: 49). It has
been said that it is a blessing in disguise when the Catholic Church is under persecution. And, for quite a long time, it has been proved that the
blood of the martyrs is the seed of new Christians.
Secondly, when Christ states that the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head, He is not talking only here about the discomforts of the way,
but also about our inclination to rely on our strength and virtues. Apparently, this was the stance and mindset of the first person who met
Jesus: I will follow you wherever you go. Discipleship is first and foremost a grace, a calling, and not our choosing. If we are able to overcome
difficulties and temptations, it is only possible because we agree to cooperate with the help, the gifts and the healing grace of God.
Moreover, Jesus’ remark is a warning: we have to be ready for surprises and unexpected problems, without seeking other consolation than
faith and hope in God’s plans. If we believe and hope, nothing can distract us or affect us when we experience trials and setbacks. We do not
know the full extent of the events around us, especially when they are deeply painful:
There was a man who was the sole survivor of a ship which sank at sea. He was able to make a small raft of some of the
ship’s cargo and eventually drift to a desert island. There he constructed a shelter and lived on what little food he had
been able to salvage from the wreckage. Time after time he had attempted unsuccessfully to attract the attention of a
passing ship. Finally, he saw a ship approaching more closely and hurriedly set a signal fire ablaze. To his dismay, the
ship passed by and was quickly fading from sight. Accidentally, sparks from the signal fire set the thatched roof of his
shelter in flames, and the man watched hopelessly and helplessly as all of his provision burned to ashes.
All was lost, he reasoned, and life could not last much longer. Suddenly he noticed that the ship which had passed him by
was turning around and approach-ing the island more closely than before. To his great relief, he was seen by the crew and
rescued. Once on board, the grateful survivor went to the captain of the ship to express his thanks. But what caused you
to turn around after you had already passed by me? he queried. We saw the signal fire you made by setting your
shelter on fire, the captain responded.
Discipleship is costly, but not being His disciple is even more costly because it means a lack of eternal life, a life of permanent consolation and
true joy on this earth and hereafter.
Thirdly, when Jesus meets another man and invites him to follow him, he says he is willing, but asks first to bury his parents. Jesus replied:
Let the dead bury their dead; leave them, and proclaim the kingdom of God.
To a Jew this is the most provocative answer that He can give, because in Israel, the most sacred duty for a son is to bury his parents and, to
fulfill it, he was exempt from any precept of the law, even that of the Sabbath.
It would be unwise to take literally the words of Jesus, but it would be equally so to diminish its provocative charge: What is your priority?
Liturgy? Study? Health and physical appearance? Organizing activities? I do not think we can give the right answer any more clearly and
strongly than Jesus: Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.
Finally, the third encounter teaches us that the whole creation eagerly awaits that the kingdom of God appears and is realized. It is impatient.
All moments are precious because people suffer continuously and in many ways, most of times invisible to us. On the other hand, the Holy
Spirit is certainly at work in our neighbors, which likewise is imperceptible to our eyes.
This attitude has nothing to do with hyper-activism or rush; on the contrary, we have to stop on our road and perhaps leave our activity, when
the Holy Spirit gives us clear signs of his call, usually through our neighbor. This was the case of the Good Samaritan. There cannot be
delays or uncertainties, nothing can justify our procrastination.
A guard in charge of a lighthouse along a dangerous coast was given enough oil for one month and told to keep the light burning every night.
One day a woman asked for oil so that her children could stay warm. Then a farmer came. His son needed oil for a lamp so he could read.
Another needed some for an engine. The guard saw each as a worthy request and gave some oil to satisfy all. By the end of the month, the tank
in the lighthouse was dry. That night the beacon was dark and three ships crashed on the rocks. More than one hundred lives were lost.
The lighthouse attendant explained what he had done and why. But the prosecutor replied: You were given only one task: to keep the light
burning. Every other thing was secondary. You have no excuse.
All activities and affections are secondary when it comes to following the will of the Father. Jesus, as teenager, responded to his mother: Why
were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house? (Lk 2:49).
We cannot waste time in gossips, useless discussions, debates on trivial matters, while the world is in urgent need of the Gospel’s
announcement. If I do not have the strength to do violence to myself, I will remain an admirer of Jesus, but will not become a disciple.
