The first period of the Philippine literary history is the longest. Literature during the pre-colonial
period is based on oral traditions and crude on ideology and phraseology.
It has two distinct classifications: religious and secular. It introduced Spanish as the medium of
communication.
Literary Forms under this period include propaganda literature and revolutionary literature. It
planted seeds of nationalism in Filipinos. The Language shifted from Spanish to Tagalog.
By this time, Filipino writers had acquired the mastery of English writing. They now confidently
and competently wrote on a lot of subjects although the old-time favorites of love and youth persisted.
During the war years, Tagalog poets broke away from the Balagtas tradition and instead wrote
in simple language and free verse. During the post-war years, there is a bountiful harvest in poetry,
fiction, drama and essay. The common themes are about feminism, socio-politics, and expression of
feelings.
Themes of most poems dealt with patience, regard for native culture, customs and the beauties
of nature and surrounding.
Many works of 21st literature grapple with the events, movements and literature of the past in
order to make sense of the present. Additionally, the technological advancements of the 21st century
have led other writers to hypothetically write about the future, usually to comment on the present and
evoke introspection.
