Topic 1: Introduction to Empowerment Technologies

Course Description:

Information and communication technologies as a tool for curating, contextualizing, collaborating, and
creating a content and experiences for learning in the professional tracks

General Objectives:

At the end of the semester, the students should be able to:

1. Develop awareness on ICT technologies, online systems, platforms and functions, internet etiquette,
and online research process skills
2. Apply the different productivity tools and techniques online in developing an application specific to
professional tracks
4. Analyze the effects and changes brought by the ICT tools and platforms in the society
5. Create ICT Project for Social Change which integrates rich multimedia content to enhance the user
experience and delivery content

Empowerment – authority or power

Technology – application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes; machinery or equipment


developed from the application of scientific knowledge

Empowerment Technology – giving power to something or someone with the use of technology

Information and communication technologies – refers to technologies that provide access to information
through telecommunications – is the exchange of information over distances by electronic means
(telephone network, radio broadcasting system, computer networks and internet)

Computer Network – two or more computers linked together to share information and resources

Internet – two or more computer networks linked together around the world to share information and
resources

World Wide Web – an Internet service that allows documents to be connected to other documents by
hyperlinks
Web Browser – it is a tool or software that is used to browse the Internet

Examples: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera mini, Firefox

Search Engine – it is a software program that is used to search for information on the Internet by pointing
you to websites that are related to the word you typed in. It is dependent to the web browser.

Examples: Bing, Yahoo, Google

Website – collection of related webpages that can be access on the Internet

When browsing the Internet, you need to know the NETIQUETTE

NETIQUETTE – Internet + Etiquette – good moral behavior when using the Internet

We need to be safe, responsible and ethical when using the Internet

To be safe, know the RISK and DANGERS, to be responsible and ethical, know how to act when faced with
dangers.

Each group shall pick one risk or danger. They will present it through a role play.
