Literature Review: Domain B

In the article, “The Most Important Question Every Assessment Should Answer”, the

author says, “The difference between assessment of learning and assessment for learning is a

crucial one, in many ways indicative of an important shift in education” (Heick, p.1) There are

five strategies for assessment for learning given which include sharing learning experiences,

eliciting evidence, feedback, self-assessment, peer-assessment. The artifacts I have chosen in

Domain B represent assessments that I feel are representative of eliciting evidence, feedback,

and the project also used peer-assessment. I have included an oral reading fluency quick check

and a grading sheet from a student project.

The first artifact that I have chosen to include under domain B is an oral reading fluency

quick check. I’ve included this because it was given in the beginning of the school year and used

to understand where the student might be in reading and making connections to the text they are

reading. This is also given in the middle of the year and end of the year to check progress in

reading fluency. The article says, “the benefit of assessments for learning isn’t merely a more

clear picture of understanding; used properly, it can also inform the rest of the learning process,

from curriculum mapping” (Heick, p.1) The oral reading fluency is just one way to understand

each student and what their learning needs might be. To get the whole picture, the use of formal

and informal assessments are necessary.

The second artifact I have chosen is a grading system for a class project. This was a

research project and prior to completing the project, a chart was made with the students input on

how to research and websites relevant to the topic were given as a suggestion. The grading sheet

included a list of all the parts the project should include. I should’ve taken it a step further and

provided a rubric that was more specific. Along the process of completing the project, students

had periods of time where they shared the assignment with another peer to get feedback but it

wasn’t a written paper, just talking. I could’ve also created a system for giving feedback to

peers. This is why I included this particular artifact. It will be interesting to see the progress I

make in assessments and assigning projects.

Overall, I feel like I have the most work to do in the area of assessment. I started during

my first year of teaching to create systems that worked for me as far as recording observations

and informal assessments. It was easier for me to teach a unit and then give a test but I would’ve

liked to include more exit tickets and class discussion. A lot of times I checked in with a thumbs

up/down and white board work or observations. The artifacts I’ve chosen will be a reminder of

where I have started and how much more I still have to learn.
