BACTERIOLOGY
My first section in evrmc along with 5 interns assigned is in the bacteriology
section, at that time there was no Culture and Sensitivity so I didn’t do anything except
perform gram staining and afb staining. In Bacteriology the specimens varied from
transudates to aspirates to blood and also urine. There were at least 10 machines used in
the bacteriology section for incubating, refrigeration. Etc. The staffs oriented us around the
bacteriology section on what to do and explained how the machines worked.

CLINICAL MICROSCOPY
My second section was clinical microscopy, what we did in this section was to
analyze stool and other body fluids like urine and csf. When you analyze urine you first have
to check if there is a UCG request to determine if the patient is pregnant, after that you will
pour the urine into test tubes; and if there are many specimens you will have to place them
in a rack then number the tubes and request form to avoid shuffling of specimens. Check
the urine color and clarity then report, at that time the machine was unusable so we had to
read the urine manually.

BLOOD BANK
My third section was BB; we were oriented to interview if the donor can donate blood or
he/she is deferred, we have to check the blood type and hemoglobin if the donor can
donate blood. In BB we were taught to bleed, to store blood and sometimes the staff
demonstrate how to separate the blood components. In blood blanking packed red blood
cells is stored at least 1 month before it is disposed. I also learned that the logging of
inpatient and outpatient blood is different.

HISTOPATHOLOGY
My Fourth section was histopathology, I learned many incredible things that I can share with
my co-interns in this section, we mostly did staining in this section and sometimes help the
staffs, after the staining we mounted the slide and let it dry then logged into the log book
numerically ordered to be passed into the physicians to read the slides.
OPD
My fifth section was OPD which means outpatient department, what we did in this section is
we extracted blood from 8am to 4pm, I learned a lot in this section when it came to blood
extraction but there were many people in the OPD so it was the most hectic section in my
internship at EVRMC. The staffs taught us to manage time and be efficient.

MCH
My sixth section was mch which stands for mother and child hospital, I learned a lot from
this section. What we did in this section is mostly blood extraction and pasting of results to
the different floors.

CLINICAL CHEMISTRY/IMMUNOSEROLOGY
My seventh assigned section was chemistry and immunoserology, the specimen in this
section is primarily serum with the occasional use of whole blood for HBA1C. I learned a lot
from the clinical chemistry/ immunoserology section, the specimen is stored in yellow
because there is a gel that separates the serum and formed elements by centrifugation for
at least 5 minutes. In cc/is we also got to perform test like DRT, HBSAG, ANTI-TP.

HEMATOLOGY
My last section in EVRMC is hematology, the specimen mostly used in hematology is whole
blood stored in EDTA tube which this lavender top sometimes stored in microtainer tube
which is also lavender top. I learned a lot in this section when it came to smear making, the
techniques used to make a good smear, what angle to use, the amount of blood to be used
because it will affect the smear. I also learned that in reticulocyte count we have to make a
solution using 1 drop of methylene blue and 1 drop of whole blood and to let it sit for at
least an hour before you smear.
