3.2. Elevation & Dimension of Berth

Overall Length L= 61.5m

1) Berthing load & Fender spacing
a. Berthing load

According to BS6349-Part 4-1994, berthing energy shall be calculated as the following equation:
E = 0.5.CM.MD.(VB)2.CE.CS.CC/g
Where:

- CM: The hydrodynamic mass coefficient, CM = 1 + 2D/B
- MD - The placement of ship (T)

b. Difficult berthing, sheltered
c. Easy berthing, exposed
d. Good berthing, exposed
e. Navigation condition
difficult, exposed

Design berthing velocity as function of navigation conditions and size of vessel (Brolsma et al,
1977)
- CE - the eccentricity coefficient
- CS - the softness coefficient
- CC - the berth configuration coefficient
K2 W
CE  Cb 
K 2  R2 LPP * B * D *1.025

- K: The radius of gyration of the ship and may be calculated from the formula:
- K= (0.19Cb+0.11)*Lpp
- Lpp: Length of vessel’s hull between perpendiculars, (mm)

b. Fender spacing
The following equation can be also used for determining the maximum fender interval:

L max  2 r 2  (r  h) 2

Where:
- L: maximum interval of fenders (m)
- r: Bent radius of bow side of vessel (m). If the information of a bent radius of board side
is not available, then following equations offer a guideline to the bent radius.
- DWT: Dead weight tonnage of vessel

Sandy ground: R pk  300 N  A p [ PartⅡ Chapter2 Eq.2.4.5 of TSHPF2009 ]

Where,

Ap : toe area of pile (m2)

N : N-value of the ground around pile toe

N  N1  N 2

2
N1 : N-value at the toe of pile

N2 : mean N-vale in the range from the toe of pile to the level 4B above

B ; diameter or width of pile (m)

Shaft resistance of pile (Rf) shall be calculated as follows:

R f k   r f k Asi
i

Where,

R f k : characteristic value of pile shaft resistance (kN)

r f ki : average strength of skin friction per unit of area in i-th layer (kN/m2)

Asi : circumferential area of pile in contact with ground in i-th layer

Sandy ground: r f ki  2 N [PartⅡ Chapter2 Eq.2.4.9 of TSHPF2009]
