Education is an important medium in acquiring essential knowledge and
skills. It is not more than just learning from books. It is an effort to reach of
your dreams and to inherit their life wisdom to their offspring. Our world is
constantly changing and developing so it is very important to teach and
bring up intelligent people who could understand the problem of modern
society and solve them in a proper way because education plays a vital role
in shaping successful people. It gives us the opportunity to become a
productive member of a civilized society by acquiring all of the necessary
skills. It helps us develop a disciplined life and provides us with better
earning opportunities. If you look at the existing educational system today,
Year 2013, Former President Aquino signed the Republic Act No. 10533
also known as Enhanced Basic Education or popularly known as K-12
Program. Philippines are the last country in Asia to adopt a 12 years basic
education system. Wherein the K-12 Basic Education Program aims to
provide every Filipino child with the education s/he needs to compete in a
global context. In the Philippines, a basic education curriculum that will see
a mandatory kindergarten year and two additional senior high school years
added to what was a 10-year education curriculum to make basic education
12 years. According to Gulfnews reports: “The programmed has been
adopted not only in schools in the Philippines, but also in Filipino schools
abroad that follow the department’s curriculum”. The question is what is the
status of K to 12 program? Is it improving? Do we compete globally for this
program? Filipinos are known to be competitive in the international
community. However, our educational system hinders us from becoming
even more competitive. The implementation of K to 12 programs in our
country is the key to our nation’s development and improvement. On the
other hand, implementing K to 12 programs brought some problems to
some. Some junior high school do not offer a course preferred by the
students making them to move into another school to take for the course
they want to choose. Furthermore, lacking of buildings, facilities, and
supplies are also the problem. In addition to that, parents have to spend
two extra years for school, and if their children decide to pursue college,
there is additional two year of education. “According to Anabel D. Intal the
status of K to 12 education upon the rating or numbers of enrolles in year
2016 exceeded despite the additional two years. In the school year 2017-
2018, which I the second year of the implementing of the program the first
batch of senior high school students graduated. This batch has the choice
to continue or pursue their college or they already want to look for job and
use their learning’s”. There are also challenges faced by our government,
according to DepEd Secretary Briones, this year created huge number of
teacher items for the program, but still it is lack of teachers and also
classroom to fill in its demands. On the other hand, as far as ebeis
concerned, the government is finding its way to provide our needed
teaching guides, curriculum guides, additional teacher, classrooms and
buildings needed for the successful implementation of K-12 program.
