English - Novel
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Theme- Courage
The theme of courage is well portrayed in “Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. Mr. Utterson showed
courage. When he heard about Mr. Hyde and how evil he was. he waited till late night to meet the
man. This was done to protect his friend Dr. Jekyll, whom he believed was threatened by Mr. Hyde.
When Poole came to ask him for help, he rushed to Dr. Jekyll’s house with courage. Suspecting
danger in the laboratory, he courageously broke down the door.
Character – Helpful
The character in ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ who was helpful is Richard Enfield. When he saw
Mr. Hyde trampling on the little girl, he was furious. He rushed to Hyde and demanded and
explanation. Later, he demanded compensation for the girl’s unpleasant experience. Mr. Hyde had
to pay the girl’s family. To make sure Hyde pay , he followed Hyde back to the house to collect the
cheque.
Character- Loyalty
‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ has the message of loyalty for its readers. Poole was a loyal
employee to Dr. Jekyll. When he suspected that his employer was in danger, he went to ask Mr.
Utterson for help. Together, they broke the door of the laboratory and learnt the truth about Mr.
Hyde. Mr. Utterson , out of loyalty to his friend, deceided to keep it a secret. This was to protect
Dr.Jekyll’s good name.
Exciting event
The most exciting event in “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is when Mr. Utterson and Poole were
banging on the door of Jekyll’s laboratory. They could hear Mr. Hyde’s voice inside. Thinking that
Dr. Jekyll was in danger, they broke down the door. They saw Hyde lying dead on the floor . Dr.
Jekyll was nowhere to be found. Hyde had died from poison. There was also a letter from Dr. Jekyll
and a new will leaving everything to Mr. Utterson. The letter revealed that Hyde was Dr. Jekyll.
This event is exciting and suspenseful.
Important lesson
I have learnt an important lesson from ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This is the need to practice
human decency in our actions. Dr. Jekyll, in his obsession to discover the drug, performed an
indecent act. By trying the drug out on himself, he was betraying his professional ethics. He
committed an unprincipled act by creating Mr. Hyde. Finally, he had to end his life to destroy Mr.
Hyde. Immoral and vile acts will not go unpunished.
Character - Determined
The character in the ‘The Phantom of The Opera’ who is determined is Raoul. He was determined
to win Christine’s love and marry her. Despite his brother’s disapproval of Christine , he continued
to woo her. When she told him about Erik, he was determined to protect her. Erik kidnapped her on
the night of her concert . Despite knowing the dangers , he risked his life to look for her . He could
have died inside the torture chamber . His determination paid off in the end.
Theme- Courage
The theme of courage is well portrayed in ‘The Phantom of The Opera’. Raoul and the Persian
showed courage . Raoul wanted to protect Christine from the evil Erik. When he kidnapped
Christine , Raoul went to look for her, risking his own life. The Persian showed Raoul the way
through the secret door and passageways despite endangering his life. They were trapped inside the
torture chamber . Christine’s courage act in kissing Erik saved them.
Value of compassion
‘The Phantom of The Opera’ brings attention to the value of compassion. The Persian showed
compassion to Raoul. He knew that Raoul was frantic with worry about Christine when she had
been kidnapped by Erik. So he helped Raoul to look for her. Although Christine was horrified by
Erik’s ugly appearance, she kissed him on his lips. This saved Raoul and the Persian. These two
characters portray the value of compassion.
Loyalty
‘The Phantom of The Opera’ has the message of loyalty for its reader. Raoul showed loyalty in his
love for Christine. Christine was also loyal in her love for Raoul. When Raoul was trapped with the
Persian inside the torture chamber, she kissed Erik in a desperate attempt to save his life. Like
Raoul and Christine, we must be loyal to our beloved no matter what.
Character – Strong
Christine Daei in the ‘The Phantom of The Opera’ reflects a strong character as written by
Gaston Leroux. She was strong to accept that she was a from poor family and not accepted by
Raoul’s family. She was strong to ignore her love towards Raoul and stayed away from him. When
she appeared at the Opera House she has to compete with other experienced singers. She was strong
to take up the challenge to become the top singer of the Opera House. When Erik kidnapped her,
she was strong to accept Erik’s love and even sacrificed her love for Raoul by kissing Erik. It shows
her strong love towards Raoul and she will make the sacrifices to show her love.
Setting
The novel ‘The Phantom of The Opera’ revolves around the Opera House. Therefore, the
setting which I find interesting is the underground of the place. No one would aspect that such a
place has an intricate underground passage. What marvels me is how it is built. When Christine
being abducted, Raoul has to be taken through it by the Persian. It even has a room of mirror where
Raoul and the Persian were tortured. One needs to have a high imagination to build a place with
such an architecture and that is why I feel that the setting is interesting.
Theme
The theme in the novel ‘The Phantom of The Opera’ is love and sacrifices. Love is seen
almost among all the characters. Christine love Raoul and the feeling is mutual. On the other hand,
Erik admires Christine. Due to the love which fills the air, sacrifices had to be made. Christine has
to sacrifices her happiness by agreeing to marry Erik. She has to do this because she does not want
Erik to hurt Raoul. She kisses Erik to show her sincerity. Erik, who is touched by Christine’s move
to kiss him lets her go to be together with her lover. He too has to sacrifice his own happiness to see
the love of his life be happy for ever.
