(Jerelyn will stand and lead the prayer)
Thank you, Jerelyn!
2. Classroom Management

around you and throw them all in the trash bin. Yes, Sir!
3. Checking of Attendance
Let me check now your attendance. So,
secretary, is there anyone absent today? No one is absent today, Sir.
Thank you!
4. Review of the previous lesson
Good morning, class! How’s your weekend? Good morning, Sir!
That’s good to know! Anyways, do you still We had a great morning, sir!
remember our lesson yesterday? Yes sir, we do!
If you do so, let me ask you few questions
about our topic, The Voice of the Mountain.
Guide Questions:
i. What does Popocatepetl’s hunger
Sir, Popocatepetl’s hunger represents
represents?
deforestation wherein the mountain is longing for
trees in which it’s a necessity for it to stay on the
ground as a mountain.
Very good!

ii. What is the theme of the story, and why? The theme is about betrayal and being
opportunistic. It is shown when the little animal
and his kind betrayed Popocatepetl on his promise
of a pair of wings but instead bring his kind to the
land of Popocatepetl and live there completely
ignoring Popocatepetl.
Excellent!
iii. What is the moral of the story? The moral of the story, The Voice of the Mountain,
is that you should never easily trust strangers just
because somebody else said good words about
them. This happens to Popocatepetl, his trust to
the little creatures has given him nothing but
That is absolutely right! disappointment.
5. Motivation
Class, you will be divided into five groups. Each
group will be given a task to perform. What you
are going to do is to answer the following
questions and your group will write the answer
on a manila paper using the marker with
strings. Note that each of the strings should be
handled with one hand only. That means that
one string is equivalent to one hand of a
person, and the marker should be handled by
the number of the strings attached to the
marker. Are you ready, class? Yes, sir!
(the game will be played)
As you have noticed, it is not that easy to finish
the task with the group, right? Yes, sir. My hand cannot coordinate with the other

are just going with the flow and just depending
the movements of their hands to movement of
their group mates’ hands. Haven’t you noticed
that it is much easier to do the task alone and
without the help of others? Yes sir, it is!
That is what happens when you always depend
your task on others. Because there are things
that are meant to be done alone. Today, we are
going to learn about a story that will enable us
to realize that depending others may bring
disaster on us.

B. LESSON PROPER
Class, I will give you a copy of a short story
entitled, “A Grain As Big As A Hen's Egg,” by Leo
Tolstoy. What you are going to do is to listen
very carefully to the audio that will be played as
you read the story. Take note that there will be
questions to be asked along the playing of the
audio so you must be prepared to answer. Are
you ready, class?

(The audio will be played for the story)

While listening to the audio, the students will
answer the following questions.
1. What kind of object did the children find in
the ravine? The object that the children found in the ravine was
shaped like a grain of corn, with a groove down the
That is right! middle, but as large as a hen's egg.

2. How did everyone realize that the object was When a hen pecked at the object, then everyone
a grain of corn? realized it was a grain of corn.
Very good!

3. What did the learned men suggest the King

They suggested the king to ask the peasants who
should do when they failed to find the might have heard from their fathers when and
answer? where grain grew to such a size.
Great answer!

4. Describe the old peasant. The old peasant was old and bent. He just manage
to go to the palace with the help of two crutches.
Good answer!

5. What was the old peasant’s answer to the He said that he had never sown or reaped such
King? grains. He told the king to ask about the same to
his father.

6. Describe the old peasant’s father.

The old peasant’s father came to the king using just
a single crutch. He was able to see that his son did.
That’s a good answer!

7. What was his answer? He said that he also had never sown or reaped such
grains. He also said that they never bought any, for
in their time money was not yet in use. Every one
grew his own corn, and when there was any need
we shared with one another. He told the king to

ask about the same to his father.

8. Describe the old man’s grandfather. The grandfather was different from his son and
grandson as he could walk easily and without
crutches: his eye was clear, his hearing good, and
Very good! he spoke distinctly.

He said that the corn like that used to grow

9. What was his answer? everywhere in his time. He lived on corn like that in
his young days, and fed others on it. It was that
grain that they used to sow and reap and thrash.
Excellent!

10. Why was the grandfather healthier than his

Because nowadays, people began to want what
son and grandson?
others had. They began doing sinful things and
could no longer find contentment.
Great answer!

11. What did you learn from the story Sir, I’ve learned that we should be contented and
should live our life by our own labor and should not
Very good! desire what others produce.
After hearing and reading the story, let us now
tackle the symbolisms used in the story. What
do you think does the crutches represents? Sir, is it support?
That is absolutely right!
The crutches represent the ‘aid’ or ‘support’ that
one is given freely, instead of having to work for
it. The youngest old man struggled to limp in,
the father of the old man limped in with one
crutch, and the grandfather, walked in, clean
and of pleasant sight to the eye. Each one has
dependent into more sinful and hostile
environment, full of thieves, liars, and
murderers.
How can you relate this in real life?
Sir, this generation is already losing faith in
humanity. Most people of this generation began to
be more dependent on others that we stopped
That is right!
thinking of others.
The symbol applies into life today, each new
generation is actually decaying the honor and
pride of humanity.
I hope that someday we should learn not to
depend on others just to make a life. It is true
that no man is an island but if this being
dependent on others may transform you to be
ignorant, quite lazy person which will eventually
be the norm of society, then that would be the
right time to ask yourself, “Do I still need a
crutch?”

C. GENERALIZATION
Class, let us now have a short review about our
lesson earlier.
Guide Questions:
i. What does the crutch represents? The crutches represent the ‘aid’ or ‘support’ that
one is given freely, instead of having to work for it.
Very good!
ii. What is the moral of the story?
We should be contented and should live our life by
our own labor and should not desire what others

produce.
iii. Why do you think being too dependent on
others is wrong? Being dependent on others may transform you to
be ignorant, quite lazy person which will eventually
That is absolutely right! be the norm of society.

D. APPLICATION
The class will be divided into four groups. Each
group will be given puzzle pieces and what they
are going to do is to rearrange the puzzle
pieces to form a picture. After forming the
picture, there will be a phrase to be formed at
the back of the puzzle. This time, each group
should draw symbols that will give best
explanation to the phrase. Each group will be
given five minutes to finish the task and after
the allotted time, they will present their work
to the class.

IV. EVALUATION
Directions: Answer the following questions pertaining to the short story, “A Grain as Big as Hen’s
Egg.” Every correct response earns five points.

1. What does the grain represents? How?

2. Associate the grain to the three old men.
3. If you would be given a chance to depend on others, who would you depend on? Why?
V. ASSIGNMENT
It is a great honor to deliver a speech of dedication, although it is quite challenging and daunting
especially if you feel unarmed with knowledge and skills in doing so. A dedication is an important moment
for a school, and the speech should inspire the students and faculty to make their school’s educational
experience in the years to come the very best it can be. The speech should come from your heart and
communicate how you feel about the value of learning.

Assignment:

Since it is already 2018, create a message to yourself about the things, good or bad, that you have
done in which you will and will not do again for this year, 2018. You may include past experiences which
taught you a lesson and mistakes that you made which you don’t want to happen again this year.
