MODULE 5(A): TRANSFORMERS

1. Explain the principle of operation of single phase transformer.


2. With a neat diagram explain the types and construction of single phase transformer.
3. Derive an expression for EMF equation of a single phase transformer.
4. Explain the losses of transformer. How to minimize the losses?
5. Derive the condition for maximum efficiency of a transformer.
6. What is voltage regulation? Give it’s significance.
7. A 50kVA transformer has N1:N2 = 300:20. The primary winding is connected to 2200
volts, 50hz supply. Calculate
i. Secondary voltage on no-load.
ii. Approximate value of primary and secondary currents on full-load.
iii. Maximum value of flux.
8. A 1-ϕ transformer has 400 primary and 1000 secondary turns, the net cross sectional area
of the core is 60cm2. The supply is 500V, 50Hz. Calculate
i. The peak value of the flux density
ii. Voltage induced in the secondary
iii. The number of secondary turns to induce a voltage of 2500V
9. A 40 KVA, 1-ϕ transformers has core loss of 450W and full load copper loss of 850W. If
the power factor of the load is 0.8. calculate
i. Full load efficiency
ii. Load for maximum efficiency
iii Maximum efficiency at UPF.
10. A 1-ϕ, 25 KVA, 1000/2000V, 50Hz transformer has maximum efficiency of 98% at full-
load, UPF. Determine its efficiency at
i. ¾ th full-load, UPF
ii. ½ full-load, 0.8 p.f.
iii. 1.25 full-load, 0.9 p.f.
11. A transformer is rated at 100 KVA. At full-load its copper loss is 1200W and its iron loss is
960W. Calculate
i. Full load efficiency, UPF
ii. Efficiency at half-load, 0.8p.f
iii. Load kVA for maximum efficiency
12. A 50 KVA transformer has an efficiency of 98% at full-load, 0.8 p.f. and 97% at half-load,
0.8 p.f.. Determine the full-load copper loss and iron loss. Find the load at which maximum
efficiency occurs. Also find the maximum efficiency.

13. A 25 KVA transformer has an efficiency of 94 % at full-load , UPF and at half-load, 0.9
p.f.. Determine the iron loss and full-load copper losses.

14. A 600 KVA, 1-ϕ transformer has an efficiency of 92% at both full-load and half-load, UPF
. Determine its efficiency at 75% of full-load, 0.9p.f.

15. A 1 KVA, 1-ϕ transformer has core loss of 15W and full-load copper loss of 20W.
Calculate the efficiency at
i. Full-load, 0.9p.f. lag
ii. Half full load, UPF
iii. ¾ th full-load, 0.707 p.f. lag or lead

16. A 50 KVA, 400/200V, 1-ϕ transformer has an efficiency of 98% at full-load and 0.8p.f,
while its efficiency is 96.9% at 25% of full-load and Unity p.f.. Determine the iron and

17. The maximum efficiency at full-load and UPF of a 1-ϕ, 25 KVA, 500/1000V, 50Hz
transformer is 98%. Determine its efficiency at
i. 75% load, 0.9 p.f.

MODULE 5(B): THREE PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR

1. Explain the principle of operation of 3-phase induction motor.


2. With a neat diagram explain the construction details of 3-phase induction motor.
3. Explain the concept of rotating magnetic field.
4. What is slip? Give it’s significance.
5. Derive an expression for rotor current frequency of an induction motor.
6. What is the necessity of starter in induction motors. Explain Star-Delta starter.
7. A 6-pole induction motor is supplied by a 10-pole alternator which is driven at 600 RPM, if
motor is running at 970 RPM. Determine the percentage slip.
8. A 4- pole, 3 phase, 50Hz induction motor runs at a speed of 1470 RPM, Find Synchronous
speed, Slip and Frequency of induced EMF in rotor.
9. A 4 pole induction motor is supplied from a 50Hz source. The rotor emf makes 2
alterations/sec. Find slip and speed of motor.
10. A 6 pole alternator runs at 1000RPM and supply power to a 4 pole induction motor. The
frequency of rotor is 2Hz. Determine the slip and speed of motor.
11. A 4 pole, 50Hz induction motor has a slip of 1% at no-load and operates at full-load, with
slip of 2.5%. Find the change in speed from no-load to full-load.
12. If a 6 pole induction motor is supplied from a 3 phase, 50Hz supply, has a rotor frequency
of 2.3Hz. Calculate percentage slip and speed of motor.
13. A 3 phase, 6 pole, 50Hz induction motor has a slip of 1% at no-load and 3% at full-load,
find
i. Synchronous Speed
ii. No-load speed
iii. Full-load speed
iv. Frequency of rotor current at standstill
v. Frequency of rotor current at full-load.
14. A 8 pole alternator runs at 750 RPM supplies power to a 4 pole induction motor. Frequency
of rotor is 1.5Hz. What is the speed of motor and slip?
15. A 3 phase, 4 pole, 440V, 50Hz induction motor runs with a slip of 4%. Find the rotor speed
and frequency of rotor current.
16. A 12 pole, 3 phase alternator is coupled to a engine running at 500RPM. It supplies an
induction motor which has a full-load speed of 1440RPM. Find the % s and number of
poles of motor.
17. A 3 phase induction motor with 4 poles is supplied from an alternator having 6 poles and
running at 1000 RPM. Calculate
i. Synchronous speed of induction motor
ii. its speed when slip is 0.04
iii. Frequency of the rotor emf, when the speed is 600 RPM.
