Working with presenters, inteviewees, actors and other contributors

Contributor Release Form - note for student producers/film makers

Although the film or other material you are producing is part of your course, BU does not
contract with your contributors and is not responsible for managing them or your relationship
with them.
It is expected that your contributors will generally not be your employees, because they are
supporting you on an informal, voluntary basis, you are not requiring them to attend for set
hours, perform an agreed list of duties, follow your instructions (although of course you will be
hoping that they will co-operate with you) or deliver certain results for you. You should pay
their reasonable expenses (if there are any, such as travel) and provide drinks and food if
appropriate depending on how long they are working with you.
If you are intending to commercialise your film or other materials in any way, this agreement is
not appropriate and you should agree separate arrangements with your contributors.
If you do employ actors or other performers you must pay at least the minimum wage and
there are other requirements that you must respect including the national minimum wage
requirements, national insurance and tax, limitations on working hours etc (see
https://www.gov.uk/employment-status). You will need a separate agreement for this, and this
release will not be suitable.
You must ensure that an appropriate risk assessment is carried out under BU’s health and
safety policy for all activities. As your film is part of a BU assignment connected with the
student’s course, BU’s public liability insurance will usually apply, but you must make sure that
you apply appropriate care and act responsibly at all times to avoid accidents and injury to
people and damage to property.
It is really important that if you are using actors or contributors you look after them properly.
You must:
 be clear with them about what you expect from them
 be clear about what you will do for them
 remember that they are volunteers who are helping you with your course - treat them
well and as you would expect to be treated
 comply with the rules
In short, make sure that they have a comfortable and enjoyable experience working with you.
Your and our reputation depends on it.
