Modeling Earth’s Atmospheric Layers

1) Start with a large piece of paper.- large post-it note paper, bulletin board paper,
Legal paper etc….
2) You will be drawing the layers of the atmosphere. All 5 layers should be represented and
labeled neatly and spelled correctly. GIVE THE DRAWING A TITLE
3) Requirements:
Show the earth – maybe draw the whole earth and then put the layers out from that
Or draw features that represent the earth. Your drawing could show
layers in a semi circular direction or rectangular shape.
4) Determine the scale you will use to correctly represent the altitude of each layer.
EX: 1mm= 1 km Hint: Measure your paper you are using to determine the scale
Drawing must take up most of the paper.
Draw each layer to scale. Indicate how many km and miles each layer represents
Make sure you put the scale on the paper.
Color code each layer somehow.
5) Add at least 16 pictures representing where they would be located within the layers.
EX:- clouds, cirrus, cumulus, space shuttles, aurora, airplanes, moon
You can use examples from handouts, books, research etc…
6) Label the ozone – not a main layer but plays an important role. It’s symbol is O3 because
it is made of three oxygen atoms.
7) Indicate where the ionosphere is located.- use research to find out this information
8) Make sure you leave a gap in the ozone to represent the “hole” in this layer.
9) Make sure you draw where a meteor would enter the Earth’s atmosphere.
By the way they enter where it is extremely hot which helps the meteoroid burn up.
10) somehow indicate the temperature change in each layer.
11)Neatly list 2 characteristics of each layer. Ex: mass of air, air pressure, events

CHECK THE RUBRIC FOR EXPECTATIONS. ON BACK.
