1 A new identity

Aim Pre-activity (10 minutes)


To practice asking for and giving personal • Bring in two magazine photos, one of a woman and another of

Procedure (20 minutes)


• Explain that students are going to invent a new identity for
themselves and then go to a party in the role of the character they
have invented.
• Give each student a blank identity card and ask them to complete it
with a new name, country, job, age, etc., for themselves.
• When everybody is ready, ask students to imagine they are at a
party in their new role. They must walk around talking to other
people and try to keep the conversation going, as at a party, by
asking as many questions as possible. Demonstrate the activity with
a student first.
• Go around the room listening and correcting as necessary. You
might want to help create a relaxed party atmosphere by putting on
some background music as the students do the activity.
• At the end of the activity, with everybody back at their desks, ask
students how much they can remember about the other people at
the party. Elicit complete sentences, e.g., She’s Svetlana. She’s from
Russia. She’s a teacher.

Extension (5 minutes)
• Students exchange cards with the person sitting next to
them and use the information to write a personal profile of
the invented character. Go around the room helping and
correcting as necessary.
