WHAT IS CHAJJA?
oChajja (also called as sunshade or weather shed) is
the projected element just above the window,
which shades the opening, stops rain from
entering the room and reduces sky glare while
looking out of the room.
oChajja is of two types, internal(loft) and
external(sunshade). Internally it is provided for
storage purpose like keeping boxes etc in
kitchens. Externally provided above windows to
keep direct sunlight and rains from entering the
room.
oIt’s thickness usually tapers from 75 to 100 mm
and projection is 300, 450, 600, 750, 900 mm.
FUNCTIONS OF CHAJJA

1. PROTECTS FROM THE SUNLIGHT 2. PROTECTS FROM THE RAINWATER

3. AS AN AESTHETICS TO A BUILDING 4. A RECESS PLACE TO KEEP UTILITIES
LIKE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR
ORIENTATION AND LOCATION OF CHAJJA
There are three basic types of exterior sunshades: CANTILEVERED SUNSHADE SYSTEM

HORIZONTAL LINE SUNSHADE SYSTEM

VERTICAL LINE SUNSHADE SYSTEM

Cantilevered sunshades: A suspended system distributes the load from the exterior
sunshade to the building structure.

Horizontal line sunshades are most effective when used on tall expanses of glass or
on curtain walls where attaching a series of cantilevered sunshades on top of each
other is not practical.

Vertical line sunshades are most effective on east and west elevations to block the low
sun angles in the early morning and late afternoon.
WHAT IS WATERPROOFING?
Waterproofing maintains the appearance of the building and increases the
life of the structure. New buildings rarely suffer from leakages through
water-proofing, but as the structure becomes older, it settles unevenly,
forms cracks in the walls and then leakage/ seepage begins. The building
surfaces are made water-resistant and sometimes waterproof.

TYPES OF WATERPROOFING
The following waterproofing methods are commonly used in construction:

1. CEMENTITIOUS WATERPROOFING 2. POLYURETHANE LIQUID MEMBRANE

3. BITUMINOUS MEMBRANE 4. BITUMINOUS COATING 5. LIQUID WATERPROOFING MEMBRANE

MATERIALS AND COMPOUND FOR WATERPROOFING
New technologies of waterproofing are extremely adhesive to create a
seamless barrier around the otside of a structure. The following are some of
the various waterproofing materials available in markets (brands):
RIDEX WEATHER SAFE: It is a polymer based single compound U.V.
resistant, heat retardant elastomeric forming water proofing breathable eco-
friendly compound.
RIDEX AP: It is a brand name for a polymer based compound for filling on
smooth glossy surface with high bonding and elastometric properties.
RIDEX WR: It is a water based ready to use transparent waterproof coating
having melamine and silicon as active ingredient, which works as an
excellent water repellent.
RIDEX SBR LATEX: Ridex SBR LATEX is an emulsion of single component
co- polymer based later specially developed to improve the properties of
cementious compositions.
HOW WATERPROOFING IN DONE ON CHAJJA
STEP 1: Cleaning the top of the chajja and chisel extra mortar, if any.
STEP 2: Applying a thick cement slurry over the top of the chajja.
STEP 3: Then applying 1:1 ½: 3 metal screen coat on it.
STEP 4: Later, making a Rounding (Vatta) at the junction of chajja and
wall of the building.
STEP 5: Cure this coat for Seven days.
STEP 6: Applying cement slurry with the water-proofing compound for
smooth finish(Ghotai). Later, polishing it with a metal float and make
impression with a 2mm diameter cotton line Dort, to avoid cracking.
STEP 7: Curing this water-proofing for at least next Seven days.
