WHAT IS CHAJJA?
oChajja (also called as sunshade or weather shed) is
the projected element just above the window,
which shades the opening, stops rain from
entering the room and reduces sky glare while
looking out of the room.
oChajja is of two types, internal(loft) and
external(sunshade). Internally it is provided for
storage purpose like keeping boxes etc in
kitchens. Externally provided above windows to
keep direct sunlight and rains from entering the
room.
oIt’s thickness usually tapers from 75 to 100 mm
and projection is 300, 450, 600, 750, 900 mm.
FUNCTIONS OF CHAJJA
Cantilevered sunshades: A suspended system distributes the load from the exterior
sunshade to the building structure.
Horizontal line sunshades are most effective when used on tall expanses of glass or
on curtain walls where attaching a series of cantilevered sunshades on top of each
other is not practical.
Vertical line sunshades are most effective on east and west elevations to block the low
sun angles in the early morning and late afternoon.
WHAT IS WATERPROOFING?
Waterproofing maintains the appearance of the building and increases the
life of the structure. New buildings rarely suffer from leakages through
water-proofing, but as the structure becomes older, it settles unevenly,
forms cracks in the walls and then leakage/ seepage begins. The building
surfaces are made water-resistant and sometimes waterproof.
