CIVIL ENGINEERING TO SOCIETY AND OTHER DISCIPLINE OF PROFESSION

Civil engineers design, build, and maintain the foundation for our modern society – our roads
and bridges, drinking water and energy systems, sea ports and airports, and the infrastructure for
a cleaner environment, to name just a few. Civil engineering touches us throughout our day
(ASCE, 2019).

Engineering is a broad field that is divided into various disciplines and sub-disciplines. The
disciplines of engineering can be divided into four main categories, chemical, civil, electrical and
mechanical engineering. Each main discipline will provide you with a “taste” of the various
skills and knowledge required to work in any field related to the discipline.

There are also branches or sub-disciplines, of these main disciplines that offer specialized
knowledge and skills in a particular field; for example Automotive Engineering is a branch of
Mechanical Engineering but is heavily focused on vehicle design and testing and these in-depth
subjects may not be covered in a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering.

 Structural Engineering- focuses on the framework of structures, and on designing those

structures to withstand the stresses and pressures of their environment and remain safe,
stable and secure throughout their use. In other words, structural engineers make sure that
buildings don't fall down and bridges don't collapse.
 Environmental Engineering- This discipline refers to a sub-discipline within civil
engineering to improve the natural environment. This field includes waste water
management, air quality control, recycling, waste disposal, environmental sustainability,
and many other public health issues. Environmental engineers study the effects of
technological advances on the environment.
 Geotechnical Engineering- This branch of civil engineering is concerned with earth
materials. Geotechnical engineering is very important and is employed by military,
mining, petroleum, and other engineering concerned with construction on or in the
ground. Geotechnical engineering not only work on projects dealing with underground
tunnels (ie. Subways), mines, etc, but also to study earthquakes, landslides, and rockfalls.
 Coastal and Off-Shore Engineering- These two sub-disciplines could roughly be
grouped together. Coastal engineering deal with managing coastal areas; their projects
include protection against floods and erosion. Coastal engineers also work with ports.
Off-Shore engineering is concerned with human-structures in the sea. Oil platforms,
artificial islands, andsubmarine pipelines are all included with off-shore engineering.
 Transportation Engineering- This sub-field deals with planning, functional design,
operation, and management of facilities of any mode of transportation. In additional to
civil engineering, transportation engineering is also related to industrial engineering.
 Water Resources Engineering- Civil engineering deals with pretty most everything that
the public uses, this also includes water resources. Water resources engineering includes
everything from public drinking water, to the flow of water from the reservoirs to
residential areas, and to the treatment of water. They are also involved with the state of
water in streams and lakes.
 Municipal or Urban Engineering- this branch of engineering deals with engineering in
a residential setting. Both in municipal and urban, these engineers work with streets,
sidewalks, water supply networks, sewers, street lighting and anything about facilities at
your house that you can think of. This branch is also connected with urban planning.
 Construction Engineering- is a professional discipline that combines design skills with
supervision and management of construction projects.
