WARNING
Warnings tell you about conditions and actions that could result in personal injury or
death. A qualifier (e.g. Hazardous Voltage) may follow the warning title.
CAUTION
Cautions tell you about conditions or actions that could result in damage to the inverter
or other equipment. A qualifier (e.g. Inverter Damage) may follow the warning title.
NOTE
Notes tell you about things which are important for you to know but not as serious as
cautions or warnings.
Important-Read First
The Satcon PV inverter communicates with external devices using a limited form of the
Modbus open communication standard.
Exceptions
The Modbus implementation in the Satcon inverter does not fully conform to the
standards described in the “External Publication Sources”.
Master-Slave
Modbus is a single-master multiple-slave protocol. The Satcon inverter and other options
(e.g. Weather Station) are always slaves.

OSI Model
Communications architectures in general are based on an abstract layered model
developed as part of the International Standards Organization (ISO) Open System
Interconnection (OSI) initiative. In its simplest form, ISO/OSI divides network architectures
into the following seven layers:
1. Physical
2. Data Link
3. Network
4. Transport
5. Session
6. Presentation
7. Application
TCP/IP Model
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol is an internet protocol. It has five layers
and is not as strictly defined as the OSI model. Although the concept is different from the
OSI model, the layers are often compared to each other as follows:
Internet Application Layer (includes the OSI Application Layer, Presentation
Layer, and most of the Session Layer)
Internet Transport Layer (part of the OSI Session Layer and OSI Transport Layer)
Other layers may be mapped directly between the two models, although they
may be named differently.
Communication Protocols
The Satcon products communicate over networks using RS485 and TCP/IP protocols.
Message Transactions
Satcon’s PowerGate®, PowerGate® Plus, and Solstice® inverters—as well as other devices
such as weather stations, power meters, and subcombiners— communicate with the user
over a standard Ethernet network port. The network is accessed through a built-in port on
the Satcon Communication Controller Module (CCM) inside the inverter.
The CCM uses industry-standard Modbus protocol. This protocol defines the message
structure that the CCM will recognize and use. It also describes the process that the
communication controller uses to request access to another device, how it will respond to
requests from other devices, and how errors will be detected and reported. Modbus
protocol specifies the format of the layout and contents of message fields used by the
CCM.
The Modbus protocol provides the internal standard that the communication controller
uses for parsing messages. During communications on the Modbus network, the protocol
determines how the controller will know its device address, recognize a message
addressed to it, determine what action needs to be taken, and extract any data or other
information contained in the message. If a reply is required, the controller will construct
the reply message and send it using Modbus protocol.
All transactions use a master-slave technique, in which only one device (the master) can
initiate transactions (called “queries”). The other devices (the slaves) respond by
supplying the requested data to the master, or by taking the action requested in the
query. Refer also to “Query and Response Cycle”.
Query
Response
MASTER SLAVE
(Communication
Controller Module- (Satcon Inverter)
CCM)
Query Response
MASTER SLAVE
Query Cycle
The function code in the query tells the addressed slave what kind of action to perform.
The data bytes contain any additional information that the slave will need to perform the
function. For example, 03 will query the slave to read holding registers and respond with
their contents. The data field must contain the information telling the slave which register
to start at and how many resistors to read. The error check field provides a method for
the slave to validate the integrity of the message contents.
Response Cycle
If the slave makes a normal response, the function code in the response is an echo of the
function code in the query. The data bytes contain the data collected by the slave, such as
register values or status. If an error occurs, the function code is modified to indicate that
the response is an error response and the data bytes contain a code that describes the
error. The error check field allows the master to confirm if the message contents are
valid.
DATA DATA
RTU Mode
With the RTU mode, each 8-bit byte in a message contains two 4bit hexadecimal
characters. The main advantage of this mode is that its greater character density allows
better data throughput than ASCII for the same baud rate. Each message must be
transmitted in a continuous stream.
The format for each byte in RTU mode is:
Coding System 8-bit binary, hexadecimal 0-9,A-F
Two hexadecimal characters contained in each 8-bit
field of the message.
Message Framing
Modbus Message Framing
In RTU mode, messages start with a “silent” interval representing a specific number of
character times. The first field then transmitted is the address field.
The allowable characters transmitted for all fields are hexadecimal 0-9, A-F. Networked
devices monitor the network bus continuously, including during the “silent” intervals.
When the first field (the address field) is received, each device decodes it to find out if it is
the addressed device.
Following the last transmitted character, a similar interval of silent characters marks the
end of the message. A new message can begin after this interval.

Note : The serial port for the 500kW PowerGate® PLUS inverter is configured according to this column.
Connecting Devices
Slaves must be connected to a controlling master using a daisy-chain technique (Figure 7 ).
Do not use a star-configuration. Note the following:
PowerGate® Plus and Solstice ® inverter systems: Up to 32 devices can be
connected, including master.
PowerGate® Inverter systems: Up to two inverters can be connected (one at each
end) together with a weather station and/or power meter in between the
inverters, plus a master.
Line Termination
Termination is used to match the impedance of a node (device) to the impedance of the
transmission line being used. When the impedances are mismatched, the transmitted
signal is not completely absorbed by the load and a portion is reflected back into the
transmission line. The reflections can interfere with the actual signals and generate
communications errors.
Connections
Large potential differences between grounds may exist and should be considered before
connecting system nodes. The first step towards successful protection is to assure that
each device in the system is referenced to only one ground, eliminating the path through
the device for surge currents searching for a return. There are two approaches to creating
this ground state.
The first approach is to isolate the data ground from the host device ground; this is
typically done with transformers or optical isolators. With an isolated port, the entire
isolated circuitry floats to the level of the transient without disrupting data
communications. As long as the floating level of the circuitry does not exceed the
breakdown rating of the isolators (typically 1000–2500 volts) the port will not be
damaged. This type of protection does not attempt to absorb or shunt excess energy so it
is not sensitive to the length of the transient. Even continuous potential differences will
not harm isolated devices. It is important to note that isolators work on common mode
transients, they cannot protect against large voltage differences between conductors of a
data cable such as those caused by short circuits between data and power circuits.
An alternative approach is to tie each of the grounds on a device together (typically power
ground and data ground) with a low impedance connection. The transient protection
however needs to be able to dissipate the energy in the transient by either absorbing the
energy or providing an alternative shunt path, however this limits the size of the dynamic
transient that can be handled and does not allow a continuous potential difference
between devices, since this can result in large currents.
Transmission Modes
Only RTU (binary) mode is supported. ASCII mode is not supported.
Function Codes
Only two function codes are supported (shown in decimal):
04 Read Input Registers
16 Preset Multiple Registers
For PowerGate® Plus and Solstice® inverters units, if you specify function codes other than
04 and 16, the inverter will produce undefined results. Only use the two function codes
specified here.
For PowerGate® inverter units, if you specify function codes other than 04 and 16, the
inverter will produce an exception response with an error code of 1. Only use the two
function codes specified here.
Register Addresses
PowerGate® Inverter
The valid address range for registers is 30070 to 30175 for function 04, and 40209 to
40213 for function 16.
Not all registers in this range are implemented. If you “read” a register that has not been
implemented, the logic will return undefined data and if you “write” to this type of
register, the logic will return undefined results. Avoid both reads and writes to registers
that have not been implemented.

Glossary
CCM Satcon Communication Control Module. This module is installed in the inverter and is
part of the “master-slave” function in bidirectional message transfers within the
network. The CCM unit acts as a “master” in Modbus RS485 protocols, and “slave” in
TCP/IP protocols.
Master/Slave The Modbus protocol used in this inverter communication system is based on a
Modbus Protocol single-master, multiple-slave protocol. Only one master is connected to the bus at
any one time, while one or more slaves can be connected to the same serial bus.
SatCon inverters are always slaves.
Modbus Protocol A serial communications protocol introduced many years ago for use with the
MODular DIgital CONtroller (MODICON) device. MODICON represented the first
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). Modbus protocol provides the internal
standard that the SatCon Communication Controller uses for parsing messages.
Protocol A mutually agreed upon format (or set of rules) for doing something. In computer
systems, it most commonly refers to a set of rules or standard that enables
computers to connect and transmit data to one another, hence the term
“communications protocol.” A protocol can be implemented by hardware, software,
or a combination of both.
