ASSIGNMENT: 01
Elon Musk:
Elon Musk is the CEO and CTO of SpaceX, Former CEO and current chief
product architect of Tesla Motors, chairman of SolarCity, and co-founder of
PayPal and Zip2.com. Musk is also involved in developing a high-speed
transportation system known as Hyperloop. He is not only an entrepreneur
but also an inventor, innovator, and engineer as he personally participates
in designing of electric cars and spaceships. Elon Musk was the second
entrepreneur in the Silicon Valley (the first one was James H. Clark) who
managed to create three companies with the market cap of more than $1
billion – PayPal, SpaceX, and Tesla Motors. The distinctive personality traits
of Elon Musk are perseverance, critical thinking, accurate self-analysis and
hard work as it is quoted by himself that he used to work 120 hours per
week in his initial days. Current Net worth of Elon Musk is 20.7 Billion USD.

Early life and Education:

Elon Musk was born to a South African man in 1971 in Pretoria, his mother
though was a Canadian. Musk was an introverted child and from an early
age had interest in Computers and software’s. Due to this at the age of 12,
he earned $500 by selling a computer game Blastar, which he had created
by himself. At age 17, in 1989, Elon Musk moved to Canada to attend
Queen’s University, though just after 2 years his big dream came through as
he transferred to University of Pennsylvania where he earned a dual degree
in Economics and Physics. After leaving University of Pennsylvania, Elon
Musk got a scholarship offer at Stanford University in California as he
headed to pursue a PhD degree in energy physics. At Stanford he learned
about the internet boom and just after 2 days of admission he dropped out
of it.

Achievements:
 CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors, Elon revolutionized the
electric cars.
Tesla motors: On July 19th, 2006 Tesla's first production vehicle was
unveiled. A battery electric vehicle sports car with more than 200
miles per charge in the United States.

 Founder of Space Exploration Technologies, also known as SpaceX.

Space X: In an attempt to regain public interest in space exploration

and increase the budget of NASA, Elon Musk conceptualized a project
(Mars Oasis) to land a miniature greenhouse and grow plants on
Mars.

 Musk reveal a concept for a high-speed transportation

system Hyperloop.

Hyper loop: Created by Elon Musk in 2012, the concept incorporates

reduced-pressure tubes in which pressurized capsules ride on an air
cushion driven by linear induction motors and air compressors.

 Tesla acquired of SolarCity for $2.6 billion.

 In 2015 Tesla introduced Powerwall.
 In 2015 Musk announced the creation of OpenAI.

Open Artificial Intelligence: OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial

general intelligence benefits all of humanity.

 In 1995 he started Zip2, a web software company that was renamed

to PayPal in 2001.

PayPal: It's free to send money to friends and family in the U.S. when
you use your bank account or PayPal balance.

 In 2002 PayPal was acquired by eBay for US$1.5 billion in stock, of

which Musk received US$165 million.
 In 1999 Musk co-founded X.com, an online financial services and e-
mail payment company, from the sale of Zip2.
 In 1994 received a Bachelor of Science in physics from College
 In 1983 he taught himself computer programming and at age 12, sold
the code for a BASIC-based video game he created called Blastar.
Zip2 and PayPal
In 1995 Musk alongside his brother, Kimbal Musk, created his first IT
Company Zip2, it was an online city guide website. He worked day and night
for the first 2 years so that his company could grow into a big one. In 1999,
a division of Compaq Computer Corporation bought Zip2 for $307 million in
cash and $34 million in stock options. This deal set a record for selling a
company for cash. The same year Musk co-founded X.com, an online
financial services/payments company after a merger with a rival company
Confinity X.com was renamed to PayPal and Elon Musk

Became the chairman and chief executive of PayPal. In October 2002,

PayPal was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion in stock, out of which Musk
received a handsome amount of $165 million.

SpaceX

Musk founded his third company, Space Exploration Technologies
Corporation, or SpaceX, in 2002 with the intention of building spacecraft for
commercial space travel. By 2008, SpaceX was well established company,
and NASA awarded the company the contract to handle cargo transport for
the International Space Station with further plans for astronaut transport in
the future. On May 22, 2012, Musk and SpaceX made history when the
company launched its Falcon 9 rocket into space, it carried 1000 pounds of
supplies for the astronauts. It was the first time a private company had sent
a spacecraft to the International Space Station. By 2022, Elon Musk aims to
launch a spacecraft that will carry people, astronauts and potential supplies
to Mars.

Tesla Motors
Musk became the chairman of the board of Tesla after liking the idea of
electric cars and investing $7.5 million of his own money to kick start the
operations. By the year 2008 Musk became the CEO of the company and
took all of company’s operations under his hands. By that time, he had
invested $70 million of his own money in the company. After a rigorous
struggle of 5 years Tesla launched its first Electric car by the name of Tesla
Roadster, followed by Model S and X in 2012 and latest Model 3 in 2017.

SolarCity and Hyperloop

In August 2016, a $2.6 billion dollar deal was made to combine his electric
car and solar energy companies, it was all due to continuing effort of
Musk’s which allowed to promote and advance sustainable energy and
products for a wider consumer base. His company Tesla Motors purchased
SolarCity Corp., a company Musk had helped his cousins start in 2006. In
August 2013, Elon Musk released a concept for a new form of
transportation called the Hyperloop. It would make travel between cities
much safer and quicker which will help cut the travel time. An
electromagnetic impulse will be used to move the capsules, and a low air
pressure would make it possible to achieve higher speeds than any other
ground transportation. The project would cost around $6-10 Billion, each
capsule would carry 28 people, move at a speed of 700-800 mph and it
would deliver people from Los Angeles to San Francisco in just 30 minutes.
