J ONATHON B ROWN
is a Scottish artist who has been based in the hills north of Nice
since 1992. Over twenty years ago a chance remark by David Hockney
drew him slowly away from his early training as a philosopher and a
career in arts journalism, towards painting and drawing.
His recent show in the UK was a large exhibition of landscape
pictures entitled “RoadMovies” at the Talbot Rice Art Gallery in
Edinburgh in 2002 and “Stations of the Cross”, an entirely new
departure for the artist — as well as an entirely original
perspective on the subject — marks Jonathon’s first solo showing in
London.

S TATIONS OF THE C ROSS

tells the story of Jesus carrying the cross to His execution, a
journey from the trial at the hands of Pilate and the people, to the
Crucifixion and Resurrection.
Jonathon has chosen to give us 21 episodes on large hanging canvases
two metres tall, done mainly in charcoal — a unique set of dramatic,
observant images that are at times poignant and intimate, or
agonisingly vivid.
