Computer Education I
LEARNING COMPETENCY:
Use the Mathematical Functions to perform special operations.
I OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
1.Define what function is
2.Identify the basic functions used in spreadsheet
3.Describe the uses of the basic functions
4.Follow the steps on how to use the basic functions in spreadsheet
calculations
5.Perform common calculations using basic functions (SUM, AVG, COUNT,
MAX, MIN)
II SUBJECT MATTER:
Topic : BASIC FUNCTIONS OF SPREADSHEET

IIIPROCEDURE:
A. Preparation
1. Daily Routine:
Prayer /Greetings /Checking of Attendance /Checking of
Classroom situation.
2. Drill:
Using the given data below, perform the following formulas.
A B C
1 8 3 5
2 2 10 0
3 2 1 4
4 7 5 6
1. =A1+A4+B2/B4
2. =B4B2C1
3. =A4C3+A1
4. =A4*B1+A2
5. =(A1+A4+B2)/B4
After 5 mins., check the answers of the students.
3. Review
What is formula?
How are you going to enter formula in excel?
What are operators? What is the importance of operators?
What do you mean by reference?
What is a cell?
4. Motivation
If you want to go to a distant place like Manila or Cebu, what
kind of transportation you will take to reach the destination?
Through a PowerPoint presentation show to the class the
image of an Airplane and a Ship.
Guide Questions:
1. What is the difference between an Airplane and a
Ship?
2. Which of them can quickly reach to the destination?
How about this?
=A1+A2+A3+A4+A5+B1+B2+B3+B4+B5
=SUM(A1:B5)
Guide Questions:
1. What is the difference between the two?
2. Do you think they have the same answer?
5. Raising of Motive Questions:
What do you want to learn today?
(The students will raise their questions on what they want to learn
about the lesson of the day.)
6. Unlocking Difficulties:
a.) Predefined readymade; designed
b.) Arguments determine values or cell references on
which the function will base its calculations.
data needed by the function to operate.
c.) Function Name name of the function; tells what calculation to
perform.
d.) Range a group or block of cells that have been selected or
highlighted.
e.) Data are information that are stored in any spreadsheet
program.
f.) Huge very big in size or amount.
B. Development of the Lesson:
1. Presentation
Did you know that computer could perform huge math
problems for you? It can. It can add up several hundreds or even
several thousand of numbers almost instantly. It does not simply
perform the basic mathematical operations but also performs a wide
variety of functions that can be used to speed up your calculations.
What I am talking about is Functions.
(Ask the students the definition of function.)
2. Lesson Proper (With the use of the PowerPoint Presentation)
a.) Lecture/Discuss about the following:
Definition of function
Kinds of basic functions used in spreadsheet
Uses of basic functions
The general format of using function
b.) Demonstrate by showing the steps on how to compute using the
SUM, AVG, COUNT, MAX and MIN functions.
3. Practical Handson
The students will be given opportunity to do computations
using the basic functions independently with a given sample
exercises.
Direction: Practice your fx skills on the following:
A B C D
1 8 3 5
2 2 10 0
3 2 1 4
4 7 5 6
5 4 2 10
6 2 5 2
7
8
9
1. =SUM(A1:A6)
2. =AVERAGE(A1:A6)
3. =COUNT(A1:C6)
4. =MAX(B1:B6)
5. =MIN(C1:C6)
While the students are doing their handson activity, the
teacher will go around to assist and reinforce any difficulties
encountered by the students.
4. Answering of Motive Questions:
What did we learn today? (Let the students answer the question)
C. Application:
Group Activity: (Mechanics)
Divide the class into 5 groups.
Each group will be given a set of data with an instruction to
follow.
One member of each group will enter the data
Each group will use the Excel or Calc to calculate the SUM,
AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, and MIN based on the given set of
data.
After 5 minutes, each group will present their output. The first
to report will receive a plus factor and so with the second,
third and the last group.
C. Generalization:
Students will answer the following questions:
1. What is function?
2. What are basic functions commonly used in spreadsheet
calculations?
3. What does the Count do?
4. Give the step on how to use the average function.
5. What is the difference between Max and Min function?
IV EVALUATION:
You will need to enter or use the basic functions in order to answer the
following question below.
Direction: Open your computer. Click Spreadsheet Folder on the desktop.
Open test document. Use the given data to compute the following:
A B C D E
1 234 111 114 302
2 345 221 165 102
3 187 231 178 516
4 678 465 143 304
5 873 214 130 410
6 987 251 167 108
7 287 631 205 329
8
9
10
11
1. Using the sum function, what is the total from cell A1 to A7?
2. Using the AVG function, what is the average of cell B1 to B7?
3. Using the MAX functions, what is the Max number of cell A1 to B7 ?
4. Using the MIN function, what is the MIN number of cell C1 to D7?
5. By using the COUNT function, how many cells are being used from A1 to D7?
VASSIGNMENT:
Study the uses of the other functions and answer the following questions.
1. What is the difference between PMT and FV?
2. What are the three arguments needed in the IF function?
3. What is Logical Functions?
4. What are the three arguments needed in the Date function?
