Three sets of numbers will be given to the students.

C. LESSON PROPER

-The teacher will give short background of Edward Deci and Richard Ryan

is a Professor of Psychology and Gowen Professor in the Social Sciences at the

University of Rochester, and director of its human motivation program. He is well known
in psychology for his theories of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and basic psychological
needs. With Richard Ryan, he is the co-founder of self-determination theory (SDT), an
influential contemporary motivational theory. Self-determination theory is a macro theory
of human motivation that differentiates between autonomous and controlled forms of
motivation; the theory has been applied to predict behavior and inform behavior change
in many contexts including: education, health care, work organizations, parenting, and
sport (as well as many others). Richard M. Ryan is a professor at the Institute for
Positive Psychology and Education at the Australian Catholic University and a research
professor at the University of Rochester. He earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from
the University for Rochester and his B.A. from the University of Connecticut. Ryan is a
clinical psychologist and co-developer with Edward L. Deci, of Self-Determination Theory
(SDT), one of the most influential theories of human motivation. SDT is a macrotheory of
motivation, psychological development and wellness.

-the teacher will explain the self determination Theory

Psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan developed a theory

of motivation which suggests that people tend to be driven by a need to grow and gain
fulfillment. The first assumption of self-determination theory is that people are actively
directed toward growth. Gaining mastery over challenges and taking in new experiences
are essential for developing a cohesive sense of self.

-The teacher will call one students to read the three human basic needs

-The teacher explain the three human three basic needs

Autonomy: people have a need to feel that they are the masters of their own destiny and
that they have at least some control over their lives; most importantly, people have a
need to feel that they are in control of their own behavior.
Competence: another need concerns our achievements, knowledge, and skills; people
have a need to build their competence and develop mastery over tasks that are
important to them.

Relatedness (also called Connection):people need to have a sense of belonging and

connectedness with others; each of us needs other people to some degree .

Deci and Ryan suggest that when people experience these three things, they become
self-determined. These three elements also enable people to be intrinsically motivated to
pursue the things that interest them.

- The teacher expalin how self Determination theory works

It is important to realize that the psychological growth described by self-determination

theory does not simply happen automatically. While people might be oriented toward
such growth, it requires continual sustenance. According to Deci and Ryan, social
support is the key. Through our relationships and interactions with others, we can either
foster or thwart well-being and personal growth.

-The teacher will give a short discussion about extrinsic and intrinsic rewards

-The teaher will give example of self determination theory

To understand self-determination theory, it can be useful to see some examples of

people who are high in self-determination, or thinking and acting in an autonomous and
intrinsically motivated fashion.

The best description of a self-determined individual is someone who:

Believes she is in control of her own life.

Takes responsibility for her own behavior (taking credit and blame when either is
warranted).

Is self-motivated instead of driven by others’ standards or external sources.

Determines her actions based on her own internal values and goals.

-The teacher will discuss how to improve self determination

In order to strengthen your own self-determination, it is helpful to think about what a

highly self-determined individual might look like.

People who are high in self-determination tend to:

Believe that they have control over their own lives. They have an internal locus of control
and feel that their behaviors will have an influence on outcomes. When confronted with
challenges, they feel that they can overcome them through diligence, good choices, and
hard work.
• High self-motivation. They do not rely on external rewards or punishments to
motivate them to take action. They engage in behaviors because they are good at
setting goals and working toward those aims.

• Base their actions on their own goals and behaviors. In other words, they
intentionally engage in actions that they know will bring them closer toward their
goals.

• Able to take responsibility for their behaviors. Highly self-determined people take
credit for their success, but they also accept the blame for their failures.

• Social connectivity is a main component in self-determination theory. Strong social

relationships can foster motivation and well-being, while poor relationships can
contribute to a poor sense of self and weak motivation.

• "Social environments can, according to this perspective, either facilitate and enable
the growth and integration propensities with which the human psyche is endowed, or
they can disrupt, forestall, and fragment these processes resulting in behaviors and
inner experiences that represent the darker side of humanity, "suggest Deci and
Ryan.

-The teacher will end the discussion by giving the conclusion about the topic.

Self-determination theory can be helpful in understanding the things that might motivate
your behaviors. Being self-determined, feeling like you have the autonomy and freedom
to make choices that shape your destiny, is important for each person's well-being.
When you pursue things that are intrinsically motivated that are aligned with your goals,
you will feel happier and more capable of making good choices.
