3. Using Turbowin, your notes, and the observations for Crosby and the
LJMU weather station on the day that has been allocated for you, encode
the weather for your date and time of observation. (NB: you must show
the weather information that you have used for the data for the time of your
observation for this section of the assignment to be marked!).
USE YOUR STUDENT NUMBER AS YOUR CALLSIGN.
USE POSITION 53°30’N; 3°42’W FOR THE POSITION OF YOUR SHIP.
TAKE YOUR OBSERVATION AT 1200UT ON THE DAY OF YOUR
OBSERVATION.

4 Using the WMO Codes on Blackboard, your notes, and the observations for Crosby
and the LJMU weather station on the day that has been allocated for you,
. compose a station model for Crosby correctly showing the following information:
1. Cloud cover (1)
2. Wind direction (1)
3. Wind speed (use 10kn = 1 “feather”) (1)
4. Temperature (Dry Bulb) (1)
5. Pressure (1)
(5)

1. N – 7 OKTAS OF SKY COVER(TOTAL AMOUNT OF CLOUDS IN OKTAS)

2. dd – 286 degrees(wind speed in degrees)
3. ff – 8.1 kts (wind speed in knots)(using 1feather = 10 kts)
4. TTT – 177 (DRY BULB TEMPERATURE – 17.7 DEGREE CELCIUS)
5. PPPP - 0064 (ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE - 1006.4 MILLIBAR)
(1 mb = 1 hpa)
5 Using the information shown on your synoptic charts and the theoretical knowledge
. from the discussed in class, describe the weather you are experiencing in Liverpool at
1200 UTC on the day that you have been allocated, making reference to the synoptic
features IMMEDIATELY affecting Liverpool. Explain why we are experiencing the
weather you have observed, making reference to the following criteria. Use the criteria
as headings:
 Pressure
 Wind speed and direction
 Cloud
 Precipitation
 Temperature
 Visibility

1.PRESSURE

- At 0000 UTC, Liverpool is on the passage of cold front. Therefore, sudden rise

in pressure.

LIVERPOOL
behind cold
front

- At around 0500 UTC, i found from british isles analysis ,Liverpool is behind
the cold front. Therefore,Rise in pressure continue more slowly.
LIVERPOOL

Ahead of
occluded front

- At 0900 UTC, i found from british isles analysis,Liverpool is on ahead of

occluded front where weather is similar to that on ahead of a warm front .
Therefore, there will be steady fall in pressure
- At around 1030 UTC,Liverpool is expected on passage of occluded
front, therefore, cold front catches up warm front sending warmer air
aloft.Therefore,pressure is at low point.
- At 1200UTC, Liverpool is expected behind the occluded front where weather
condition is similar to that behind a cold front. Therefore, Rise in pressure
continue more slowly.

At 0000UTC ,the isobars near Liverpool are around an area of low

pressure at . At 1200 UTC,as Liverpool may behind occluded front which is form
when depression intensifies, hence, a low pressure system or depression wil be
there in Liverpool with the winds moving anticlockwise and inward round the
low from the north.
Since, the isobar are expected close together,it indicates a windy day in
Liverpool at 1200 UTC and being located in a low pressure system or
depression ,weather characteristic may be wet, cool and cloudy also.
2.WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION
(a) Wind Speed:-
As i mention above that there was a steady fall in pressure at 0900 UTC
and at 1200 UTC, pressure may rise but slowly , there will be little changes in
isobar pattern at 1200 UTC with related to 0000 UTC synoptic chart.

,As per 0000 UTC isobar pattern and recorded barometer reading showing
pressure of 1006.4 hpa at 0000UTC,1005 hpa at 0300 UTC & 0600 UTC and
1005.4 hpa at 0900 UTC,i expect at 1200 UTC,there will be little changes in
isobar pattern around liverpool, hence, wind speed will not so strong and will
not exceed 10 kts,as i got surface wind speed of 9.8 kts while measured on
0000UTC synoptic chart.

(b)Wind Direction:-.
While i evaluate wind direction at 0000UTC,i found wind is coming from
SSW.

Since, At around 0600 UTC, Liverpool is expected behind the cold front
,hence, direction may turned left i,e backing, then strengthens and may steady,
and turned to right later i.e, veering, wind may be variable while on the
passage of occluded front changing to SW or SWbyS ,and then gradually from
W to WNW ,where Liverpool may behind an occluded front.

As Liverpool may behind oclluded front at 1200 UTC,wind may veers a little
after squalls, then strengthens and may steady and back further in a later
squall, same as when behind cold front.

3.CLOUDS
There may be mixed clouds of stratoform clouds and
cumuloform clouds like nimbostratus, cumulonimbus and towering
cumulus, while Liverpool was on the passage of occluded front.

At 1200 UTC,I observed 7 oktas of sky covered by clouds. Most of

the clouds are cumuloform clouds

I found my forecasting from 0000UTC synoptic chart is

matching with my observation of clouds at 1200 UTC as i forecast
that liverpool may behind the occluded front and weather is similar
to that behind the cold front where cumulus clouds, altocumulus
exist and other various clouds also exist which is difficult to
distinguish, such situation occured at rear of occluded front.

4.PRECIPITATION
LIVERPOOL
behind cold
front

- At 0000UTC, i visually observe there was heavy rain outside and found later
matching with synoptic chart at 0000 UTC where Liverpool is on passage of
cold front.
- At 0500 UTC, i again visually observe there was rain and compare it with
british isles synoptic chart and found matching .
- After I forecast the Liverpool position at 1200 UTC,which is behind an
occluded front,i expect light to moderate precipitation followed by general
clearing which also found matching.
5. TEMPERATURE

While ahead of occluded front temperature is cool,on passage of occluded

front will be dropping or rising and when behind occluded front colder and
milder.
As per my forecasting of liverpool position related to passage of occluded
front,at 1200 UTC,temperature will be changed little or steady, variable in
showers.

I got a reading from Crosby hourly observation,at 0000 UTC is given 18.2
degree celcius,at 0600 hrs is given 15.5 degree celcius and i observe visually
showers was there.At 1200 UTC,is given 17.4 degree celcius.Therefore,there is
little change in temperature which is almost same to my forecasting.
5.VISIBILITY
While on ahead and on passage of occluded front visibility will be poor in
precipitation. On behind of occluded front visibility will improve.
I visually checked at around 0900 UTC precipitation was there and hence
poor visibility but at around 1030hrs precipitation was not there, hence
visibility was good.
As per my forecasting from 0000 UTC,where liverpool position may behind
occluded front, there will be usually very good visibility except in showers. On
my observation day, at 1200 UTC,I found my forecasting is matching with good
visibility and no showers occured.
