History and background:
Azgard nine limited (ANL) is regarded as one of the leading manufacturing and exporters of
specialized yarn, denim and denim garments worldwide. ANL group was started as a family
business over four generations ago. The SHAIKH FAMILY, now its four generation, is one of the
oldest business families in the subcontinent with experience in many different sectors and
having a proven track record of successful leadership in four continents. The family began its
first operation in 1886 in Shamkot, in the Asian sub-continent.
Although, now, a public limited company the family still remains behind the company in every
way, supporting and nurturing its growth into the future and beyond. ANL incorporated on
January 20, 1993 as public limited company
The current specialization yarn operation was set up in 1972 with the open-end spinning and
denim weaving operation following in 1995. The final frontier was the garments operation,
which came into being in 1997.
The concept behind the group’s textile ambitions was to be a vertical apparel solution provider
based in a country that would be able to maintain its competitive advantage in this field for the
years to come. Pakistan is the fourth largest denim producer in the world with an annual
production of 200 million meters. This has now been achieved and AZGARD 9 is able to offer
these services as a single source supplier for all denim and specialized customers.
The future is squeezing the brand customers toward a sourcing solution that stems from as
small a global map as will follow we believe it is feasible, in order to not be “spread too thin”
to consolidate a position in as few regions as possible in the quest for practical and economical
global sourcing – AZGARD NINE LIMITED is the vehicle which can accommodate and achieve this
position, therefore realizing the vision that was incepted so many years ago by the guardians of
the AZGARD group bringing the resultant advantages to you- the customers.
ANL operates a vertically integrated industrial unit comprising of Spinning, Weaving, Dyeing,
Finishing, Computer Aided designing (“CAD”), Computer Aided Manufacturing (“CAM”),
Stitching, Laundry and Power Generation (gas generation). This allows ANL to control the
production processes from fiber to retail ready products. Consequently, Azgard9 can offer a
“global best buy” value proposition in the denim and jeans sector delivered with amongst the

2
shortest and lead times in the industry. Azgard9 currently supplies products to many of the
world’s top retail chains including Mango, Dr. Denim, Desenhour, Blend, Tom Taylor, etc.
The share is trading at Karachi stock exchange (KSE) @ around Rs. 25/share of RS 10/share.
Now independently led & managed by Mr. Ahmad H Sheikh, 43 + graduate from Brown
University (USA).

Description of departments:

Marketing Department:
The marketing department works separately for each of the three divisions under different
marketing heads for each division i.e. yarn, fabric and garments. But the basic procedure is
almost the same for all of them.

Spinning:

Yarn is sold locally and exported as well. First of all customers send their inquiries along with
which they may also send the sample in case of knitwear products and provide other
specifications about the product. The sample is analyzed and after the costing procedure a
quotation is sent to the customer telling if his specifications can be met or not, If the customer.
Feels satisfied then negotiation starts between the seller and the customer in which the price,
delivery date, mode of payment, payment terms and other such issues are settled. Finally, a
sales contract is signed between the two parties. On the other hand, an LC is opened. Orders
are prioritized based on their delivery dates and availability of input resources. Then production
starts.
When the production is complete, a dispatch order is issued to the dispatch department. When
the shipment leaves the mill premises, an outdoor gate pass is issued and an invoice is also
issued to the accounts receivables department. When the customer has verified the receiving
of shipment, post shipment documents are received and demand for payment is ‘made.

 New thing learned

33
First week:
I start my internship from finance department where I spent two weeks. I met
assistant manager finance, export manager, assistant manager insurance and operation
manager of GBU, SPU and DBU. They explain the process of working and explain all
working related documents. The things I learned there are:

Short-term financing:
Short-term financing is used for short-term projects, as to meet the requirements of
working capital. Results of short-term projects are also short term.
Azgard9 uses several lines of several banks for short-term financing named:

1. ERF-1 (Export Refinance)

2. ERF-2
3. FAPC
4. FE-25
5. LC

ERF:
Export refinance is the short-term loan for the export companies to increase the export of
country. When we have done a sale contract and have insufficient funds to prepare the
ordered products, we take ERF from state banks. Process should be:
Azgard9 commercial bank SBP
Documentation of sales contract presented to bank, which guaranteed that this loans is
used for the export purpose only.
Terms & conditions:
MARK UP= SBP RATE + SPREAD
SBP rate changes time-to-time but spread remains unchanged (1%) in case of ERF-1 and
ERF-2.
Difference between ERF-1 and ERF-2 is that a lot of documentation involve in ERF-1 due
to first time dealing with bank while less documentation involve in ERF-2.

34
FAPC:
FAPC is also uses to fulfill working capital requirements. Spread in case of FAPC varies
from bank to bank. We present documents to bank. Bank convert foreign currency in PAK
rupee and give to the company. When company receives cash from export sale, repay
loan in PAK RUPEE. Interest amount paid in PAK rupees.
MARK UP= KIBOR+SPREAD

FE-25:
In case of FE-25 loan taken from bank will be in foreign currency (currency of sales
contract). Mark Up also paid in foreign currency. To fulfill our working capital
environments we convert this currency in PAK rupees.
MARK UP= KIBOR+SPREAD
Spread varies from bank to bank.

Cash finance:
Pledge lines are included in cash finance. Bank takes the possession of goods from
some margin it is mostly use for the raw material (cotton). When we have to use this
cotton, we pay the amount of it to the bank and bank DE pledge this cotton for us. This
line is for limited time so company has to pay mark up for this period.
MARK UP= KIBOR+SPREAD

Running finance:
A Running Finance is a financing product issued by a financial institution to its
customers on daily basis in order to meet the daily needs of its customer. There is no fix
time period for this loan company can use this loan with in a limit. Whenever company
uses this loan, it has to pay markup.
MARK UP= KIBOR+SPREAD

Offered letter:
Offered letter consist the list of all lines of a bank with all terms & conditions

35
Second week:
At the start of second week, I met Mr. Irfan Chahudary manager export finance.
These main task done by manager export finance

Two type of term involve:

1. CAD:
Cash against delivery: on the presentation of documents cash will be given.
2. DA:
It is the delivery against number of days it can be 30, 60, 90 0r 120 days

Bank uses this document so that it can verify that this loan is used for export purpose
only.

36
For export purpose, we need following documents:

 COMMERCIAL INVOICE
 BILL OF LENDING
 GOOD DELIVERY NOTE (GD)
 E FROM

When export is done EPRC (export proceed realization certificate) use to get money from
bank. EPRC document has two kinds of reference numbers.

1. FTBC(funds against bill of collection)

2. FBP(fund against bill of payment)

FTBC:
FTBC no. use when condition on LC is DA base. For DA wait for the payment for
agreed no. of days or discount the LC.
FBP:
FBP reference no. use when LC term is CAD based. For CAD term we can get at the
spot payment on presenting the documents.

Contract is cancelled sometime due to any reason in this case a document prepare by
the name of “cancellation of contract”.
When a contract cancel company should pay fine to bank and payback loan.

The Applicant
The Applicant means the importer (buyer) who requests a bank to issue a Letter of

fulfillment of terms and conditions laid down in an L/C.

The issuing bank is the one who issues the L/C and makes the payment on behalf of
importer as per the terms and conditions prescribed in L/C.

Advising Bank:
Advising bank is usually in the country of the seller. The Advising Bank advises the
exporter / seller / beneficiary that an L/C is received for the issuing bank and informs him

Whole period of my internship at Azgard9 is the great opportunity for me to implements all
knowledge and skills learned during the study. These skills and knowledge helps me a lot to
understand the working process of azgard9 and to complete my internship report. As the
Azgard9 is an IT oriented organization and all accounts of it are managed on ERP system. By
having, some knowledge related to IT I faced no problem to understand this technology. Some
things, which are easy to understand, are:

 Financial position
 Short term and long term financing
 IT background
 LC open process
 Management skills
 Dealing and negotiation with banks

New Things Learned:

Although there are many concepts that I had learned during my study at IBIT but there are
many things that I had learned when doing my internship. I learned how to implement this
knowledge practically, accounting entries in ERP system, import and export process, short-term
financing lines from banks and all documentation related to these processes. I also learned how
to survive in a formal office environment. I observed that one should be practical and not be
very emotional and be professional at his work.

 Overall summary
 Specific recommendation
o Organization if any
o IBIT to improve its curricula and methods of teaching
to BBIT students

65
Conclusion
The textile & apparel sector is amongst the largest and most significant in Pakistan s economy,
accounting for over 60% of total merchandise exports and providing employment to 38% of
large scale manufacturing sector workforce. There is an abundant supply of local raw material
as Pakistan is the 4rth largest producer in the world.
There is also an abundance of local labor available at a competitive cost when benchmarked
against regional competitors. Against this backdrop, the industry remains largely fragmented
with few large-scale integrated players.
Worldwide denim production capacity is over 6 billion linear meters. Denim is the world’s
largest cotton textile product with estimated per annum global sales of 4 billion units.
Azgard Nine is Pakistan s largest denim products business by sales with a fully vertically
integrated Manufacturing chain. From cotton to retail ready apparel products, In house
capability for spinning, Weaving, Design, finishing and stitching enables control over the entire
value chain and provides a significant competitive advantage in facilitating faster speed to
market and control over product quality.
With Longstanding relationship with global retailers and brands, and an ability to rapidly build
up manufacturing capacity, Azgard nine is well poised to cater to an expected increase in global
demand for denim products.
The year 2012 proved very challenging due to a globally recessionary climate affecting all facets
of the business. While the business remained under pressure, Azgard Nine was able to protect
its value added services to its products portfolio. The key focus remained on meeting and
indeed finding ways to exceed customer expectations.
In addition to Azgard Nine vertical manufacturing capabilities which were already providing
customers solution concepts was added. The company now offers the client a choice of full
product development, product design and a complete logistics solution. Traditionally the
customer has been sourcing supply of the product only. Now the client has the option to source
a full supply chain solution directly from the Company. This value enhancement helped Azgard
Nine to grow with its existing customers and add new customers as well during a difficult
period.

66
Recommendations for Azgard9:

 There should be separate equipment for Training room.

 There is a need of strong communication within each department and between the
departments.

 Locate all the sub-departments of HR at same place. It will help to increase coordination
between departments.

 Internees should be free to visit all departments.

Recommendations for IBIT:

 IBIT should make a CV book, which should be forwarded to the well-named

organizations.

 IBIT should conduct seminars to promote its degree.

 IBIT should arrange industrial tours for better understanding of learned knowledge.

 Department should arrange internship programs for the students
