ENGINE VALVE LASH ACCEPTABLE RANGE

Effective with engines produced January 2002 and later (beginning with engine serial No.
series 2A), and also with rebuilt engines and replacement cylinder heads, an initial valve
lash check (and adjustment if necessary) must be performed at the following intervals (refer
to service bulletin SB-213-031):
REV 앫 Highway Applications — first B inspection interval (ASET™ AC, and all E-Tech™ and
E7 engines used in Line Haul 1 and 2 operations).
REV 앫 Vocational Applications — first C inspection interval (ASET™ AI and AMI, and all E-
Tech™ and E7 engines used in Short Haul operations).

After the initial valve adjustment interval, valve lash must be checked and adjusted at
150,000 miles (241 000 km) or 4,500 hours, whichever occurs first. This change from the
original adjustment interval of 50,000 miles (60 000 km) or 600 hours became effective with
1997 and later certified engines. Valve lash “set” specification is as follows:

Valve Lash “SET” Specification

Engine Inlet Setting Exhaust Setting
ASET™ AI, AMI and AC, E-Tech™ 0.016″ (0.406 mm) 0.024″ (0.610 mm)
and E7 prior to mid-1996
E7, mid-1996 and later 0.016″ (0.406 mm) 0.028″ (0.711 mm)

The exhaust valve lash setting change from 0.024″ (0.610 mm)
to 0.028″ (0.711 mm) for E7 engines was effective with the mid-
1996 introduction of the V-MAC® II fuel economy engines.
Always verify the correct exhaust valve lash setting by noting the
setting stamped in the lower right-hand corner of the engine
identification plate.
Whenever valve lash is being set or reset, it must be readjusted
to the specifications given in the “Valve Lash ‘SET’ Specification”
table above.

Valve lash measurements are sometimes performed as part of a troubleshooting procedure.
When performing valve lash measurements that do not coincide with the regular valve lash
check and adjustment intervals of 150,000 miles (241 000 km) or 4,500 hours, the
acceptable range for both inlet and exhaust valves is as follows:

Valve Lash Acceptable Range

Engine Inlet Setting Exhaust Setting
ASET™ AI, AMI and AC, E-Tech™ 0.012″ to 0.020″ 0.020″ to 0.028″
and E7 prior to mid-1996 (0.305 to 0.508 mm) (0.508 to 0.711 mm)
E7, mid-1996 and later 0.012″ to 0.020″ 0.024″ to 0.032″
(0.305 to 0.508 mm) (0.610 to 0.813 mm)

REV If, during a troubleshooting procedure, valve lash is found to be

within the ranges as given in the “Valve Lash Acceptable Range”
table above, these ranges are considered normal, and resetting
valve lash to the “set” specification is considered a non-
warrantable repair.
At the initial valve lash check, and thereafter at the regular valve
adjustment intervals, valve lash should be adjusted to the “set”
specification as given in the “Valve Lash ‘SET’ Specification”
table.
