Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Journey

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed: SKL2. Obtain, evaluate, communicate information to compare the similarities
and differences in groups or organisms.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor

3a- students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their
intellectual or creative pursuits.
Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:
Journey North Online Project
URL(s) to support the lesson:
https://journeynorth.org/
Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
To start my lesson, I would begin my explaining to the class how certain animals migrate and explain the
definition if needed. I will go on to say that each animal has a different way of migrating. Each student would
be assigned their own tablet/iPad. They would then be asked to access the Journey North Website. On this
website, there are a variety of animals for them to look at, as well as the different migration patterns. The
students will be able to go on the website and chose two animals of their choice to compare and contrast.
After they have picked out their animals, they will be able to do some research on the animals and their
migration patterns.
Next, the students will be given a map of the migration patterns of the two animals they chose. The students
will be able to see the migration patterns their animals took. This website allows the students to look and
read data based off other students’ findings. After completing their project, they will be asked to publish their
completed work onto the website for others to view.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Each student will need their own personal tablet or iPad to be able to complete this online learning project.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: The students will be able to collaborate with their classmates and teachers, as well as other
students from around the world through this website Journey North. Since students from around the
world can publish on and access this website, the students will be able to view others work. They will
be able to comment on their research and findings.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students will be using the data found on the website to
conduct their own research and findings. They will be asked to chose two animals from the website to
compare and contrast. They will then be given migration maps based off the patterns of their animals.

c. Higher-order thinking: With the students conducting their own research, they are brought to higher-
order thinking. Students can outside of the classroom to get their research off the website. They can
collaborate with other students who have also done the same research they have.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The students
are doing their own research on the two animals they have chosen. They will then publish their work
on the website, Journey North.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The technology tool that I have selected for my lesson idea will support all type of students. This activity will
enhance the learning experience for students in the classroom and support the engagement component of
the UDL framework wheel. The students are accessing the website on their own and then conducting
research on the two animals of their choice. They are engaged in this lesson because it is new to them and
they will look forward to completing it. This online learning project will even benefit the ELL students. They
will be able to have conversation with students from their own country.
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:
With internet safety being a big issue these days, teacher will begin by covering the rules they will need to
remain safe while on the internet and the website Journey North. They will be accessing the website with the
help of the teacher and then determine which two animals they want to conduct research on. After
completion, they will be publishing their final work on the website for others to see. To make sure the
students remain safe on this website, they will not be listing their names on their published work. They will be
asked to use their first and last initials instead.
Reflective Practice:
This lesson is a great way to show students that learning can go beyond just the classroom. I will teach them
that they world we live in is always changing and it is important to learn with it. To extend this lesson, I will
have the students pick another animal that is different from the two they have already researched. I will then
allow them a few days to really do as much research on this animal as they can. They will then write a short
paragraph on their findings and then publish it as well on that website. This will allow the students to learn
how to engage in their learning with other students and understand how learning does not only have to exist
in the classroom.
