MATH 10 LESSON PLAN

Prepared by: Jonathan Ian S. Ubas Teaching Date: July 12, 2019
Time: Industrious (10:00 - 11:00)

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. write a polynomial division problem with its synthetic counterpart
2. determine the quotient and remainder of a polynomial division problem based on the
synthetic counterpart.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

1. Topic: Synthetic Division - M10AL-Ig-1
2. References : G10 LM, pp.64-65
3. Materials : Activity notebook

III. PROCEDURE :
1. Preliminary Activities
1.1 Prayer and greetings
1.2 Checking of attendance
1.3 Setting of class mode
2. Lesson Proper
Discussion:
Illustration: Write the Polynomial Division Problem in its Synthetic Counterpart and write the
Quotient and Remainder.

Remember: In dividing polynomials using synthetic division when a polynomial is to be divided by a

binomial of the form (x – r) or (ax-br), arrange first the terms in decreasing powers of
the variable x (variable) placing zeros for the missing terms.

Polynomial Division Problem Synthetic Counterpart

1. (2x + x3 + 7x2 - 40) ÷ (x - 2)

rearranging it in standard form, we have 2 1 7 2 -40
(x3 + 7x2 + 2x - 40) ÷ (x - 2) 2 18 40
1 9 20 0

Quotient: x2 + 9x + 20
Remainder: 0

In writing the quotient, note that the degree of the first term is one less than the degree of the
dividend. The entries in the last column give the value of the remainder.

2. (-13x + 2x3 – 5x2 – 15) ÷ (2x + 5)

rearranging it in standard form, we have -5/2 2 -5 -13 -15
(2x3-5x2 – 13x -15) ÷ ( 2x + 5) -5 25 -30
2 -10 12 -45
Quotient: 2x2 – 10x + 12

Remainder: -45
IV. EVALUATION

Direction: In Activity notebook, write the following polynomial division problems in its
synthetic counterpart and write the quotient and remainder.
1. (5x2 – 17x – 15) ÷ (x – 4)
2. (4x + 6x4 + 5x2 – x – 10) ÷ (2x2 + 3)

V. ASSIGNMENT

Direction: In Activity Notebook. Divide the following using synthetic division.

1. (6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 6) ÷ (3x – 2)
2. (2x44+ x3 – 19x2 + 18x + 5) ÷ (2x – 5)
