STCW-Standard of Training Certification and

Watch keeping
1. Terms use in machinery space and equipment.

A2. Engine Control Room, Steering Room, purifier Room, Work


shop.

A3. Main engine, boiler, Aux Generator, steering gear, Fresh


water Evaporator, Incinerator, Air condition plant, Main air
compressor, Ballast pump, Lube oil pump, Sea water pump.

3. Engine Room Watch Keeping Procedures.

* To report in the engine room at least 15mins prior to watch


keeping duty schedule in proper working gear.

* To check of all running and standbys machinery’s and equipment


and to report to duty engineer to any abnormality.

* To check of all the condition of monitoring equipment and sensor.

*To check the condition and level of fuel oil service tank, settling
tank and other fuel storage facilities.

*To check the condition and level of lube oil storage tank, settling
tank, and other lube oil facilities.
4. Safe Working Practices as Related to the Engine Room
Operation.

* All watch keeper should see to it every dangerous parts of


machinery’s to be securely guarded or otherwise safe.

* Personal required to work in space with high noise level should


wear suitable hearing protection.

*Smoking should be strictly regulated particularly in vicinity of fuel


oil tank and other areas.

* Working areas should be properly illuminated ventilated free of


combustible materials, rubbish, spilled oil.

* Loose tools, stores and similar items should not be left lying
around unnecessarily.

D) Basic environmental protection procedures.

* Proper segregation of garbage.

* Incinerator (oily rags, paper waste oil.)

* Sewage treatment unit in port close overboard valve.

* Oily water separator (15ppm) no discharged in port.

* All source of any leakage should be located, repaired as soon as


possible.

* During bunkering or oil transferring operation, tank sounding


should be checked to avoid over flowing.
* Cleaning solvent should be applied in accordance with manufacture
instructions.

E) Use of appropriate internal communication system.

* All order from the superiors must be clarified.

* All communication must be clear and concise in language that can


be easily understood.

* All watch keeper should be familiar with usage of common


battery telephone VHF transceiver and engineer call.

F) Engine room alarms systems and ability to distinguish between


the various alarms with special reference to fire extinguishing gas
alarms.

* Upon boarding all engine crew to be familiarize themselves with


engine room alarm system enable them to distinguish the various
alarms with special reference as control system abnormal ships
general alarm and engineers call.

G) Safe operation of boiler.

* All watch keeper must study the faction and proper operation
boiler control. Device such as water level controller, fuel oil
temperature controller, combustion controller, ignition controller
and other related accessories.

* All watch keeper should familiarize themselves how to access


boiler condition based on relevant information available from local
and remote indicator water level for burner stop/trip, popping
pressure of safety valve.
H) Knowledge of emergency duties.

* Upon boarding all engine watch keeper must familiarize


themselves with their duties and responsibilities during emergency
situation as stipulated in the ships muster list, how to operate
proficiency all emergency equipment.

1. Fire at the engine room, Inner space


accommodation Area.

opening of fire hydrant.)

2. Abandon ship

(Boat no; 2. Attend aft painter.)

3. Rescue.

(Boat deck, Assist Engineers.)

4. Flood control

(At engine room, Assist engineers at engine room operations; Close


all openings at upper deck.)

5. Chem. Oil pollution

(Discharged oil removal group, Collect discharged oil.)

I) Scape routes from machinery spaces.

* Main Entrance and exit to the engine room.

* Entrance and exit through the steering room.

* Entrance and exit though emergency escape trunk.


* Scape from lower flat form to steering room.

Familiarity with the location and use of firefighting equipment in


the machinery space.

* CO2 portside upper deck level dedicated for engine room


machinery.

* Fire hydrant in the engine room lower level deck 2nd level deck
and upper deck.

* Hyper mist in steering gear room dedicated for engine room


machinery.

* Portable foam extinguisher in upper level and 2nd deck level.

* Dry chemical fire extinguisher port and starboard side upper


level.

A.1: A basic knowledge of routine pumping operation, such as bilge


ballast cargo pumping system.

* Before starting of pumping operation it must be confirm to the on


watch and have to letter or note from chief officer and sign by 2nd
engineer.

* Full open sea water suction valve

* Full open suction valve.

* Open discharge valve

* Crack open overboard valve.

* Full open delivery valve.


* Start ballast pump.

* Monitor the pressure.

A.2: Basic knowledge of electrical installation and the associated


danger.

* Switch off power to electric shock, to be sure that there is no


more electric on the machinery working test with multi tester.

* Put warning sing like “men at work” on panel board so that some
engine crew will know that maintenance is going on that machinery.

A.3: Basic knowledge of maintenance and repair of machinery and


tools use in the engine.

* Before repairing any machinery to ensure good working, read


first the manual or instruction manual.

* Example of tools: spanner, hammer, chain blockand special tools


as per instruction in the manual.

A.4: Basic knowledge of stowage and arrangements for bringing


slow on board.

* Before accepting the stores be sure that you have check the
item list.

* Arrange store in the proper place and separate the store engine
and deck department.
