Beach Peas Cowl

by Alla Saenko

Pattern notes:

Beach Peas Cowl pattern is designed as a part of a set with Beach Peas Tam. The
carefully selected stitch patterns used in this design make this accessory totally
reversible. While designing this cowl I kept in mind that a knitter would need under two
100-grams skeins of yarn in aran weight to make this set. If you are going to make the
cowl only, you would need more than one skein of yarn. Check the required yardage
below.
The main part of the cowl is worked sideways, then the ends of a knitted piece are
grafted together for a seamless look. Finally, the trims are knitted on in the round from
picked up stitches. The different number of picked up stitches at the top and bottom of
the cowl creates an A-line shape to hug the neck and chin, while allowing the wider
bottom part to stay comfortably on your shoulders.
The pattern includes an “Option II” instruction to make a Button Closure Style cowl
instead.
Enjoy!

Directions
Note: First, the main part is worked flat. Then, the cast-on stitches are grafted together
with the last row stitches to make a loop. Finally, the trims are worked from picked up
stitches along the top and bottom edges of the cowl. The different numbers of picked up
stitches result in a smart shape with the cowl to be narrower at the top and wider at the
bottom for the best comfort and functionality.

To adjust the number of cast on stitches to a different gauge and/or for a different depth
of the cowl use this formula: [number of stitch pattern repeats]x4+3(for
symmetry)+2(selvage)= number of cast on sts. In this design it is 6x4+3+2=29 sts.

For a Seamless Style cowl use provisional cast-on method, for a Button Closure Style cowl
use any other preferable method. Cast on 29 sts.

Option I: the Seamless Style cowl

Do not bind off. Cut the yarn leaving a tail about 4 times longer the width of the knitted
piece to have enough length of yarn to graft the ends together. Using Kitchener Stitch (see
Techniques), graft the cast-on live stitches with the last row live stitches to form the loop.

Note: Next, you will be knitting up the trims to add this accessory a finishing touch. They
are worked in the round from picked up stitches along the sides of a knitted piece that
become the top and bottom openings of the cowl. The shaping is made by picking up the
different number of stitches for the opening to be narrower at the top and wider at the
bottom for the best comfort and functionality.

The top opening

With circular needles pick up and knit an

even number of stitches along the opened
edge of the cowl in a rate approximately 1 st
per every 2 rows or, in other words, pick up
and knit one stitch in each elongated stitch
formed by slipped stitch at the beginning of a
row. [66 sts]
Place marker to mark the beginning of the
round.

Round 1-4: work in Garter Stitch pattern,

Round 5: * yo, p2tog; rep from * to end.
Round 6: knit all sts to end.
Round 7-10: rep Rounds 1-4.

Bind off all stitches, cut a tail at least 4”

(10cm) long to weave in later.

The bottom opening

With circular needles pick up an even number of stitches along the other (unfinished) edge of
the cowl in a rate approximately 3 st per every 4 rows (or 3 stitches per every 2 elongated
edge stitches). Tip: One extra stitch in-between 2 elongated stitches can be made with yo. On the
next round the yo should be worked through the back loop. [98 sts].
Place marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Work the same as for the top opening of the cowl.

Finishing
Weave in ends and block. Enjoy wearing your new cosy cowl!

Option II: the Button Closure Style

After you’ve done all the necessary number of pattern repeats, you will need to complete
this part by adding 10 more rows in Garter Stitch pattern.

Bind off all stitches. Do not cut the yarn. The same string of yarn will be used in the next
step.

Note: Next, you will be knitting up the trims to add the cowl a finishing touch. In this style,
the trims are worked flat from picked up stitches along the sides of a knitted piece that
become the top and bottom parts of the cowl. The shaping is made by picking up the
different number of stitches for the cowl to be narrower at the top and wider at the bottom
for the best comfort and functionality.

The top trim

Turn your knit 90 degrees and starting from the corner where the bind-off row was
completed begin picking up stitches for the trim along the side edge of the knitted piece as
follows: pick-up and knit an odd number of stitches in a rate 1 st per every 2 rows (or 1
stitch in each elongated stitch). [ 71 sts]

Work Rows (2-10) of the main part, which go right after ** at the beginning of the pattern
instruction (page 3). Bind off and cut the yarn leaving a tail to weave in later.

The bottom trim

Pick up an odd number of stitches along the bottom edge of the cowl in a rate approximately
3 st per every 4 rows (or 3 sts per every 2 elongated stitches). Tip: One extra stitch
in-between 2 elongated stitches can be made with yo. On the next round the yo should be worked
through the back loop. [103 sts].
Work the same as for the top part of the cowl.

Finishing
Sew on buttons to the Garter Stitch end of the cowl, evenly placed and aligned with the
eyelets at the opposite end of the cowl that will serve as button holes.

Weave in ends and block. Enjoy wearing your new cosy cowl!
