LEARNING COMPETENCIES

A. RESPIRATORY & CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS WORKING WITH THE OTHER ORGAN SYSTEMS
 Explain how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to transport nutrients, gases, and
other molecules to and from the different parts of the body; (S9LT-la-b-1)

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
- Describe the parts and function of chambers of the heart. (U)*
- Explain how blood flows within the heart . (U)

II. LEARNING CONTENT

TOPIC: CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS WORKING WITH THE ORGAN SYSTEM
MATERIALS: bond paper, pen, 1 beaker or wide mouthed jar 1 balloon 2 flexible drinking straws 1 pair of scissors
1 large pan or sink adhesive tape water
REFERENCES: Science Learners Module 15-17, Science Teachers Guide 12-14, Science Links (work text) pages 24-
25

III. PROCEDURE

A. ENGAGEMENT
1. DRILL: TERM SEARCH (Assignment)
Teacher will ask to students to get their assignment about the different terms. Then ask students to read
the different terms and ask them to tell to the class what they understood from the terms they’ve
research.
2. BRAIN STORMING Activity
Teacher will ask students to identify the strongest muscle in the body. From their responses the teacher
must lead the student to identify the correct answer, which is the heart. Then, ask them to state reasons
why they think the heart is the body’s strongest muscle.

B. EXPLORE
1. GROUP ACTIVITY: Read and Share
Teacher will give a short passage to read. After which, the students will group share their ideas or what
they’ve understood from what they’ve read.
2. INVESTIGATORY ACTIVITY: ACTIVITY 4
Teacher will let the students to go to their groups, ask to perform Activity 4: PUMP IT!!, page 13,
Science 9 Learners Manual

C. EXPLAIN
1. POST-INVESTIGATORY ACTIVITY DISCUSSION and INTERACTIVE DISCUSSION
After performing the activity, together with the students will check the activity and answers to the guide
questions. Then teacher will ask students about the key concept of the activity as well as asking students to
explain as to how their heart model works. Teacher will ask students the following to facilitate discussion
1. What is the size of your heart?
2. How does heart function?
3. Are there chambers in the heart? What are these chambers?
4. What are the functions of the chambers?
5. How do blood flows within the heart?
KEY CONCEPTS: The heart is a hollow muscular organ, about the size of your fist, which is located in the center
of your chest between the lungs. It is a double pump that pumps on the left and right sides. Every side is divided
into two chambers, the atrium and the ventricle, each of which has left and right portion, totaling to four
chambers altogether. The top chamber is the atrium (plural: atria). The bottom chamber is called the ventricle.
The valve acts as one way door, allowing blood to flow either forward into the next chamber, or out of the heart.

D. ELABORATE
1. Picture Analysis
- Let student go to their groups, teacher will show picture of different types of heart. After which ask them to
describe the parts and ask how many chambers on each of the heart. Explain their answer.

D. EVALUATE
I. Identification
____________1. Is the largest artery
____________2. Are flaps of muscle that prevents blood from back flowing.
____________3. Divides the heart into four chambers
____________4. Receiving chambers of the heart
____________5. Pumping chambers which force blood out of the heart.
____________6-10. What are the four chambers of heart? Explain its function.

II. Essay
Directions: write an essay which asks Explain how blood flows within the heart ..
