SWOT Analysis: Still Not Dead

For more than 50 years, SWOT analysis has remained a “go to” technique as a preparatory step for an
update of an organization’s strategic plan. Originally formulated as a means to identify what is
Satisfactory, what is an Opportunity, what are the shortcomings or Faults, and what are the external
Threats challenging an organization, SWOT analysis has evolved to focus on internal organizational
strengths, the internal weaknesses, the internal and external opportunities and the outside threats to an
organization’s competitive positioning. Used by Fortune 500s, non-profits and government agencies alike,
SWOT analysis is almost a universally accepted strategic management tool.

There are a variety of ways to conduct a SWOT analysis, some more useful than others. The focus of
this webinar is on prioritizing SWOTS and using these priorities as an evaluation mechanism for the draft
strategy prior to wider vetting and finalizing the strategy. Examples from several industries and “do’s and
don’ts” will be provided.
