Please note:
1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports, presentation slides, posters, laboratory
exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiner’s comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component -1: Assignment table.
4. The individual question marks have to be entered on the table of the Answer book for written exam and only the total marks are
entered in Component-2: Examination table.
5. The First Examiner (Module Leader) has to submit the following to Examination and Assessment Section after the review process:
Assignment documents, Grade-sheet data file and Module marks card (PMAR).
6. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies within +/- 3 marks, then the marks
allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve
the issue in consultation with the Chairman BoE.

Assignment
Instructions to students:

1. The assignment consists of 3 parts.

2. The assignment has to be neatly word processed as per the prescribed format.
3. Use only SI units.
4. Submission Date: 03-09-2016
5. Submission after the due date is not permitted.
6. Method of evaluation as per the submission and marking scheme
7. At the end, you are required to comment on -
a. Benefits you have derived by solving this assignment
b. Whether assignment was able to assess module learning outcomes or not?
8. IMPORTANT: It is essential that all the sources used in preparation of the assignment must be
suitably referenced in the text.

Part -A
Temperature control loops tend to be relatively slow, because of the time required to change
the temperature of the process fluid. A temperature loop usually comprises of a controller,
temperature transmitter, heating element and a final control element. An appropriate control
strategy is required in order to speed up the operation.
Problem Statement:
In this context debate on the topic “Feedforward control increases the speed of a temperature
control loop compared to feedback control”
The report should address the following:
 Identify a temperature control application
 Existing feedforward control techniques available for the identified application
 Existing feedback control techniques available for the identified application
 Compare feedforward & feedback control techniques available for the application
 Stance taken with justification and conclusions

Part -B

A boost converter is a DC-DC converter with an output voltage greater than the source voltage.
It is sometimes called a step-up converter since it steps up the source voltage. Here, 𝑉𝑆 is the
input voltage, 𝑉0 is the output voltage, 𝐿 is the inductance, 𝐶 is the capacitance, 𝐷 is the diode,
𝑟𝐿 is the inductor resistance, 𝑟𝐶 is the capacitor resistance, 𝑅0 is the load resistance, 𝑖0 is the
load current, 𝑉𝐶 is the capacitor voltage, 𝑖𝐿 is the inductor current and 𝑆 is the transistor.
Design a multivariable controller for the boost converter to maintain a constant voltage in
spite of perturbations in the input and output voltage.

Fig. 1 Boost converter

Problem Statement:
Design a suitable multivariable controller for the boost converter with parasitic elements to
maintain a constant voltage in spite of perturbations in the input and output voltage shown in
Fig. 1.
Report should address the following:
 Formulation of mathematical model
 Controller design
 Simulation of the system using MATLAB
 Analysis of Results
30 Marks
Note: Values of input voltage and output voltage will be given by module leader

Part -C
The rotational inverted pendulum consists of a pendulum attached to a rotating arm as shown
in Fig. 2. Here, ∅1 is the arm angle, ∅2 is the pendulum angle, 𝐿1 is the length of the arm and
𝐿2 is the length of the pendulum. The rotational inverted pendulum is unstable in the upright
position that it may fall over any time in any direction unless a suitable control technique is
applied.

4
FT2014 SCE503

Design a full state feedback controller to stabilize the rotational inverted pendulum in the
upright position in spite of perturbations
Report should address the following:
 Dynamics of the rotational inverted pendulum
 Design of controller to balance the rotational inverted pendulum
 Simulation of the system using MATLAB
 Analysis of Results
o Plot of arm angle and pendulum angle vs time during stabilization
o Plot of control input during stabilization
o Plot of arm angle and pendulum angle vs time during perturbation
o Plot of control input during perturbation

Guidelines for Submission
Citation of the references in the text is necessary in all the parts.
 Restrict your report for Part-A to 3 pages only
 Use of figures could be avoided in Part-A
 Divide your discussions clearly as per the sections mentioned above.
 Restrict your report for Part-B and C to a maximum of 12 and 20 pages respectively
 Divide your discussions clearly as per the sections mentioned above and draw the conclusion at
the end of each section.
 Please note: Marks will be awarded only to the sections and sub-sections clearly indicated as
per the problem statement.
 A presentation on the assignment should be given to the Examiner in MSRUAS format only.
