Yes, human activity is causing global warming. Because of global warming, ocean water is
also getting heated up and this is affecting marine life. Moreover, people and big
industries are dumping their effluents in the oceans and this is a cause for alarm.
I think it is very important to save the oceans. We are directly or indirectly influenced by
the oceans. Ocean waters serve as a source of food and valuable minerals such as salt
which we use daily in our food. Oceans also are used for commerce. For example, pearls
taken from oysters are used in jewelry, and shells and coral are used as building materials.
They also provide a place for recreation. Each year more people are attracted to the

often lack the means to treat and supply water to citizens. Developed countries tend to
have much better sanitation. Citizens should have access to clean tap water. Drinking
water should not be contaminated by sewage or waste water. The supply of clean water
would improve public health in many developing countries

There are also many disadvantages of traveling on the oceans. It leads to water pollution,
thus affecting the marine life. If there are accidents or mishaps, it may lead to oil spills,
which adversely affects the aquatic animals and plants. The time taken when travelling by
oceans is also much more than other means of transport. There may be extreme weather
conditions on the oceans, leading to accidents and in such circumstances the rescue work
also becomes very difficult.

Cue card 10
Describe the first time that you used a foreign language to
communicate
• Where it happened
• When it happened
• Who you talked to
• How you felt about the conversation

(Sample answer)
• I know three languages – Punjabi, Hindi and English
• Actually, English is a foreign language for us, but as it is taught in our
schools right from class 1, it does not seem foreign any more.
• Here, I would like to talk about a time when I used a foreign language to
communicate.
• It so happened that my cousin has settled in Italy and has been there for
the last 10 years.
• He comes home once a year and last time, he brought his Italian Friend
Martin with him.
• Martin did not know any other language except Italian.
• So, my brother had to act as an interpreter every time when Martin had to
communicate with us.
• He stayed with us for a week and I learnt many words of Italian from
Martin.
• Every time Martin would do something for me I would say Grazie Tante,
which means thank you very much.
• If I did something for him, he would say Grazie Tante, and I would say
Prego, which means you are welcome or my pleasure.
• It was great fun. I felt very happy when I could understand what Martin
wanted to say and Martin would be very happy, when we used any Italian
words with him.
• I also taught him some Punjabi words.
• I learnt many other words but unfortunately I don’t remember them now.
• My cousin has invited me many times to visit him in Italy, so I have planned
to join some Italian classes for being able to communicate there if I go.
• Fortunately, there is a Language academy called Aroma Institute, where I
can learn Italian.
• I will join that institute very soon.

1. What do you think of children learning a foreign language?
I think children should learn a foreign language. It is very easy for children to learn a foreign
language as they are very receptive and they are not hesitant about making mistakes. They also have
a benefit of not knowing any other language too well, to make comparisons and assumptions about
the difficulty of language learning. In this era of globalization, knowledge of a foreign language is
very beneficial for a better career and a brighter future. It opens more avenues for the students for
higher education and good jobs.
2. Why are some language classes boring?
Some language classes are boring because of the teaching methods used. If there no interactive and
fun activities involved in teaching a language and only textbook teaching methods are followed,
students become bored easily. Incorporating technology in classrooms, keeps the students
interested in learning and they learn it easily. For example, there should be audio-visual means used.
3. Some students hate to learn foreign languages, what can teachers do to develop their interest?
Some students hate to learn a foreign language mainly due to lack of interest and uninteresting
teaching methods used. Teachers play an important in developing students’ interest. Interactive and
fun activities should be included to keep the children involved and interested in learning. If students
are taught only from text books and there is a pressure of examination, it leads to students
becoming bored or disliking language classes. Teachers should also use contexts and examples to
which the students can relate in their day-to-day life. If they understand how the language can help
and benefit them, students would be motivated to learn that language.
4. Some people travel for learning a foreign language, what do you think?
I think that traveling is a very good way to learn a foreign language. It is true that the more we use a
language, the better we get at it. So, if travel to a county/region where that language is used, we
will interact more with the local people in that language and learn its nuances better. Also, language
is related to the culture. If we travel, we learn more about the culture and can learn the language
better.
5. What’s the best way to learn a foreign language?
I think the best way to learn a foreign language in a classroom environment, from a teacher who has
in-depth knowledge of that language. The teacher should preferably be a native speaker of that
language or should have a high proficiency level in that language. It is very important to incorporate
technology and audio-visual methods to teach that language. Also, travelling to that country/region
where the language is spoken is also a good way to learn it. These days learning a language through
videos and online classes has become very popular, as the students get a chance to interact with the
teachers and also with native speakers of that language, through the internet. There are many apps
also available, which can be downloaded on smartphones, which help learning a foreign language in a
fun and interactive way. For example, the Duolingo app.
6. Why can some people learn languages fast white others learn slowly?
Some people learn language faster than some others because of the teaching methods used to teach
them. Interacting more with the native speakers also helps with learning a language better and
faster. Also, there may be a motivating factor, like a job that requires them to learn that language,
which makes people learn a language faster than others, who don’t have any motivation behind
learning a language.
7. Does one’s age affect their language learning?
Yes, I think age affects language learning. I thing the learning curve goes down with
increasing age. Also, at an older age, people try and compare the new language they are learning
with the language they already know. That may cause a hindrance in the learning of a language.
People also become more hesitant about making mistakes and feel more embarrassed, at a later age,
as compared to young learners.

• It is a mammal - it is the dolphin.
• I came to know first time about this animal from the National Geographic
channel.
• In fact, this river dolphin is the national aquatic animal of India.
• It gives birth to its young one and suckles to feed it
• It cannot breathe under water so it has to come to the surface to breathe
• Even the little baby has to be pushed to the surface to breathe.
• Dolphins feed on most kinds of fish such as the snapper and the tuna.
• Dolphins are fast swimmers.
• They search their way through the sounds they produce, which is called
echo-location.
• The dolphins' sound waves hit an object and the echo bounces back.
• Most dolphins are peaceful and rather shy.
• So far humans have proven to be of greater danger to dolphins than the
other way round.
• There are marine dolphins found in oceans and river dolphins found in
rivers.
• Just like the tiger is our national animal and the peacock is our national
bird, the Gangetic river dolphin is our national aquatic animal.
• The Indian river dolphin is blind.
• It is found in the river Ganges.
• The female is about 9 feet long and the male about 7 feet long.
• Unfortunately our river dolphin is on the verge of extinction.
• But now the government has started taking steps to save it under the
‘Project Dolphin’
• Dolphins are important for maintaining the ecosystem.
• Recently I saw a Hindi movie Ajooba in which Amitabh Bachan is rescued by
a dolphin and he considers the dolphin as his mother.
• I came to know from that movie that dolphins are very intelligent and can
be trained.
• So this is the aquatic animal, which I find very interesting.

Well, it depends on the financial status of the people. Those who can

Yes, schools should teach both arts and science. Both subjects are
important in school. Science and technology give us better life but arts tell

• I don’t travel much, but sometimes I visit my relatives in nearby cities.

started.
• It is a single lane bridge.
• Some people on the bridge were on the wrong side of the road and other
people in cars and buses followed them and blocked both the sides of the
road leading to the jam.
• There was no place to move forward or backwards.
• People were not co-operating and no one was ready to move their vehicles.
• There was a lot of noise because of people honking the horns and also
people were getting frustrated and angry. Some were even shouting at
each other.
• After waiting there for about one hour, the traffic police finally arrived and
made people move their vehicles to make way for the traffic to move.
• We were stuck in that jam for almost two hours before we could finally
resume the journey.
• I heaved a sigh of relief when the bus started moving again, as I too was on
the verge of losing patience.

1. Are there any special places for visiting in India?
India is a diverse country. There are many places for visiting in India. There are natural
places, historical places and man made places. India has a lot of natural places such as hill
stations and sea-shores. India has a rich historical background. So India has places like the
Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Amber Fort, Golden Temple and so many more. There are many man
made tourist attractions like museums and art galleries.
2. Do Indian people like to travel abroad?
Yes, they do. Indian people travel to all parts of the world. Few decades earlier, air travel
was very expensive, and only the rich could afford it. Fortunately, now because of cheap
air flights, even the common man can dream of foreign travel. Many Indians have settled
permanently in foreign countries and are doing pretty well there.
3. What can people benefit from travelling?
People can benefit a lot from travelling. It is said that ‘travel broadens the mind’. When

I like to visit popular places, as I want to know the reasons of their popularity. Also, at a
popular tourist place, the transport and accommodation facilities are always good and
there is hardly any problem we face in terms of communication and food, when visiting
such places. OR
I like to visit lesser-known places because the culture at such places is not diluted; it is
pure, in terms of their way of living, language and food. So, to experience the purity in
culture, lesser-known places are always better. Also, there is less pollution and fewer
tourists at such places, which gives us an opportunity to interact more with the local
people and get more knowledge about them and their culture.
6. Do people prefer short trips or long trips?
It is a matter of personal choice. Some people prefer long trips as they want to visit
distant places. Going to such places is expensive and it makes no sense going and coming

life and short trips help them to recharge their batteries and they can get back to work
with renewed energy.

• The big company I’m going to talk about here is called Akal Industries
• My friend Aman's father runs this industry

manufacturing section.
• Four years ago Aman's cousin, Inderpal joined them and now Aman is
planning to join them after completing his course in Business
Management.

workers about 50
years ago but now they have 1000 people working for them round the
clock and they manufacture and supply auto spare parts to various
countries like Germany, France, US and Canada.
• They have a very good rapport with their workers and whenever they
fulfil big orders, they give bonuses to them.
• Aman tells me that his mother and aunt look after the needs of the
workers' families from time to time.
• They make them feel part of their family and that is why they have never
faced shortage of labour.
• Aman tells me that if any worker is absent or not well, his father takes his
place and does not let the work suffer.
• They also give a lot of emphasis on quality and that is why their
products are in great demand in Germany and France.
• Although Aman's family is very rich, they are very humble and
magnanimous.
• His father keeps donating for charity on special occasions.
• So, this is the big company that I am interested in.

1. Difference between big companies and small companies?
There are many differences between big and small companies. To begin with,
big companies offer bigger pay packages than small companies. Secondly,
these companies give many perks and bonuses from time to time. These
companies give benefits like health insurance and travel allowance. Another
big advantage of big companies is that it is a status symbol to work in these
companies. Furthermore, they provide opportunities to travel overseas.
Moreover, in a big company hands on training is provided to all new workers.
On the other hand, in a small company, everybody knows everybody. You are
not part of a big crowd as in a big company. If you do some good work, you
are applauded for it.
2. Are there many big companies in your country?
Yes, there are. India is a fast developing country. There are many Indian
companies, which are very big such as Tata, Mahindra, Godrej, Reliance,
Videocon, Onida and so on. There are also many multinational giants which
have opened branches in India, such as Samsung, LG, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai
and so on.
3. What are the good things about working for a big company?
4. How can a small company grow big?
Small companies can do so in many ways. They can work hard, employ skilled
workers, focus on quality and employ good marketing strategies.
5. Should big companies donate more to charities?
Yes, they should. I believe that anyone who has enough should help the needy
on humanitarian grounds. Many big companies help the NGOs and NPOs. This
is a win-win situation for both. When they get publicity for their charity work,
they are getting advertisement for free.
6. Should big companies be punished more seriously if they break the law?
No, they should not. Law should be the same for all – big as well as small
companies. Usually, big companies have big connections. So, they try to get
away with their wrong doings. This also should not happen. Punishment should
be equally serious for all law offenders.

Cue card – 49
Describe an interesting tradition in your country
• What the tradition is
• When do you celebrate it
• How you celebrate it
• and explain why it is interesting
(Sample answer)
• India is rich in culture and tradition
• The tradition I’m going to talk about today is saying ‘namastey’
• We celebrate this tradition every day, in fact several times a day.
• This is our way of greeting each other
• We do it by folding our hands, palms facing each other, fingers
pointing towards the ceiling, thumbs pointing towards the chest and
this is accompanied by a slight bow.
• This tradition is interesting because this is the biggest export of our
traditions to the western culture.
• When I say namastey, I mean to say that I am your humble servant.
• It creates and aura of respect which is far more than saying hello or
shaking hands
• It is said that the human body is composed of immense energy.
• We can turn it into a positive or negative energy
• Then we shake hands we transfer positive as well as negative energy
• But when we fold hands, we transfer only positive energy.
• When we greet another person with namastey we have no physical
contact
• Because of this the other person cannot be affected negatively
• Whenever anyone comes to our house we always say Namastey
• No wonder this word has been adopted by all the English language
dictionaries.

1. Why is it important to protect traditions?
It is important to protect traditions because they are part of our identity
and they bind us to our roots. As it is, in today’s global era, cultural
traditions are being diluted under the influence of western culture, so it has
become all the more important to protect traditions. Otherwise we will be
totally cut-off from our roots.
2. What's the most important tradition in your country?
India has a rich cultural and traditional background. It is difficult to pinpoint
one. But, I think the most important tradition in our country is treating a
guest like a God. We call it ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’. Whenever anyone comes to
our house, we greet him with folded hands – palms facing each other,
fingers pointing towards the ceiling, thumbs pointing towards the chest. It
is accompanied by a slight bow, and say Namaste or Namaskar, which
means ‘I am your humble servant’.
3. What kinds of traditions have disappeared in your country?
Many traditions are fading away, and some have disappeared altogether.
People have started wearing jeans and T-shirts instead of traditional suits
and saris. They eat global food, such as pizza and burger and not the
traditional paratha.
4. Why should children learn about traditions?
Children should learn about traditions, because these traditions will bind
them to their roots. Otherwise they will be totally cut-off from their origins
and will be lost in the global world of today. They will be just nobody in a
big crowd.
5. What can governments do to protect traditions?
They can organise cultural shows and encourage traditional singers and
dancers to promote their art. Governments can fund them so that they
don’t give up their talent.

1. What can parents do to teach children to save money?
Parents can do a lot to teach children to save money. Firstly, they can be good
role models. If parents themselves do not squander money, children will learn
the same. Parents can also buy piggy banks for children, which will encourage
them to save coin by coin, and once they have enough, they can buy
something they really want.
Parents can also teach their children the value of money, by giving them a
fixed amount of pocket money each month and not topping it up with more
money if the child finishes it before time.
2. Why do young people tend to waste money?
Young people tend to waste money because they want to show-off. They buy
latest things and show-off to their peers. Parents also give them money
instead of spending time with them. So, the young people have money with
them to squander. They belong to a consumerist society, where the new
products lure them and they just go ahead and buy them even if they don’t
need them. They don’t realise the importance of money and sometimes if
parents do not give them enough, they resort to petty crime also.
3. What kinds of things do people like to buy in your country?
India is a diverse country. People buy all sorts of things. They buy clothes,
food items, household items, electronic gadgets, jewellery and so on.
4. Do schools in India teach anything about financial management?
Unfortunately, in India schools do not teach anything about financial
management. It is important to teach children to manage their finances in
today’s consumerist society. So I believe this subject should be added in the
school curricula.
5. Why is it necessary to teach teenagers to manage money?
Teenage years are the most impressionable years of a person’s life. Habits
inculcated in these years last a lifetime. So, it is very important to teach
teenagers to manage money.
6. How do parents give pocket money in your country?
Some parents give small weekly pocket money, whereas others give a monthly
pocket money, so that children don’t pester them every now and them for
money for small things they need everyday.

• When I reached home I told my mother all about my wrongdoing.

realized my mistake.
• She forgave me, and told me never to do such a thing again.
