CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Online selling is the act or process of selling goods, products or

services online via an internet or mobile app, auction site, online classified

advertisement, online shop, social networking, social media or webshop

(according to Quora). Online selling played a great part in our generation

outside and inside our country, it is because every person has smart phones

and facilities of internet. Online selling is useful for today’s youth, but it also

has its’ disadvantages. According to Online selling ideas, the sales channel

that is growing the most in the recent years is internet. With an easy to use

online selling sites, the internet opens great possibilities for those who

earlier could not even consider the sale of products due to it’s high

marketing cost. When eBay and Amazon broke into the internet, they

practically got a monopoly on online selling sites. Nowadays, however, there

is a wide variety of options for both sellers and buyers.

1
One of the greatest advantages of these is that you do not have to limit

yourself to using a single sales portal. You have a dozens of alternatives to

choose from to put up your products sale. But here in our country,

Philippines, we have top six online selling sites to sell a products according

to onlinesellingideas.ph. First one is Lazada, the range of offering this sites

provides includes, home appliances, electronics, fashion goods. Second

one is Zalora, its content are blog on beauty, lifestyle and also fashion tips.

Third one is Shopee, they offers variety of product and placing your product

on shopee you can also expect overseas order. Fourth one is eBay, it is

originally from America, eBay has now successfully marked their place

among various online selling sites of Philippines. Next is Magento, specially

designed to empower small brands and retailers, Magento gives you a

flexible eCommerce platform to set up your own online store, Lastly is

Shopify, it is one of the best eCommerce platforms to sell online with more

than 500,000 active merchants on the site.

2
These top six eCommerce sites altogether can get your product

featured to millions of customers every day. Some of Philippine eCommerce

online selling sites that you can palce, sell your product or even buy one are

Amazon, OLX Philippines, Etzy, taobao and zaful. Although you can also

buy and sell your product buy posting it in facebook and some social media

sites. Here inNaic Cavite, online selling alsobrings a great impact not just to

the youths like us but also in the older ones because online selling gives us

less hassle just by clicking a product you loved to buy instead of going to a

mall. Even my parents, schoolmates and friends here in Naic, Cavite

enjoyed shopping online with hassle free. But in our study we are going to

dicuss what is more convenient, easy, and efficient to use if it is buying/

shopping online or actual/ normal shopping/buying.

3
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The problem in this study will focus on the comparative analysis between

online and normal/actual shopping/buying and what is more convenient to use by

the consumers or buyers. In this study we will focus on one product which is cell

phone cases that is known to be popular to youth’s.

In particular, our investigation sought to answer the following questions below:

1. What is the advantages and disadvantages of shopping online and normal

shopping?

2. What makes them differ from each other in?

 Service

 Product

3. What are the consumers reason on choosing online shopping or normal

shopping?

4
CONCEPTUAL FRAME WORK

The conceptual frame work shows the relationship between the

benefit they get in buying both online and actual and what will be

more convenient for the student to use. Where in the benefits that

they get in buying online and actual affects or leads to what will be

convenient for them whether it’s online shopping or actual

shopping.

5
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study focused on determining what is more convenient to use

whether it is shopping online or normal shopping. It will surely help

everyone to know the advantages and disadvantages of shopping in

online or in actual. Because we all know that in our today’s generation it

is not that safe to trust someone online especially when it comes to

money. The study or research that we made aims to let everyone know

that even though internet especially online shopping gives us less

hassle and convenience we should not just depend ourselves in

internet. Because it may has its amazing advantages, but we should

also consider its disadvantages.

To the customer, for them to know what is more convenient to use if it

is either online shopping or normal shopping.

To the future researcher, for them to gather and learn information about

this topic that would probably help them in their future study.

6
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Our study’s main purpose is to compare the online and walk-in

shopping. The study that our group conducted aims to let everyone

know what is the benefits that they will get when shopping online and

normal or actual shopping.

The researchers will conduct an interview to all grade 11 students

in Naic National Highschool (main) who shops both online and walk-in.

To be more specific, the researchers chose cellphone cases as the

product that we will focus in our study.

In order to gather variety of information the researcher will us a

unstructured interview, wherein the respondents answer will not be

limited.

7
DEFINITION OF TERMS

eCommerce- is a commercial transaction conducted

electronically on the internet.

Merchant- A person or company involved in whole sale

trade, especially one dealing with foreign countries or

supplying merchandise to a particular trade.

Sought- past and present principle of seek.

CHAPTER 2- RRL Review of Related Literature

and Studies

This chapter of the research primarily presents the different research

and other literatures from both foreign and local researchers, which

have significant factor on the variables included in the research. It

focuses on several aspects that will help in the progress of this study.

The study occupy the mind with the comparison of online and regular

shopping and which of this was most preferred by the consumers. The

literature of this study come from other founded existing researches,

foreign and local that are believed to be useful in improvement of

awareness concerning the study. State of the Art To answer the

questions of this research, researchers look for the different information

from distinct sources that can help to expound the problems indicated

in the study. The required information was gathered from both foreign

and local conducted researches that founded on the internet.

9
Foreign Studies about Online Selling

From the study of Pan (2007, p.5), the author cited from Engel,

Blackwell and Miniard (1990), that defines purchasing intention as a

psychological process of decision-making. According to Pan (2007),

“purchasing decision process” is when the relevant information is

searched by the consumers that are motivated by the fulfillment of

demands according to personal experience and the external

environment; then after accumulating a certain amount of information,

they begin to evaluate and consider; and finally after comparison and

judgement, they make the decision on certain products. In the recent

study of Chen, Ching and Tsou (2007), the authors cited from Azjen

(1988); Azjen and Fishbein (1980), that the theory of reasoned action

(TRA) states that behavioral intentions formed through the attitude

toward a behavior and subjective norms lead to actual behavior given

the availability of resources and opportunities.

10
A person’s interest in performing a particular behavior is reflected by

the attitude toward a behavior and it is determined through behavioral

beliefs; these beliefs are obtained through a cognitive evaluation of

outcomes associated with performing the behavior and the strength of

the association between outcomes and behavior; while the evaluation

produces either a favorable or unfavorable response to the object,

person, thing or event (Chen, Ching and Tsou, 2007).

According to Monsuwe, Delleart and Ruyter (2004), there are five

external factors to understand consumer’s intention to purchase in the

internet which is the consumer personality, situational factors, product

characteristics, previous online shopping experiences and the trust in

online shopping. Consumer’s trait includes their demographic factors

such as age, income, gender and educational level will lead them to

have the intention to shop online. For age factor, consumers that are

aged under 25 has more potential to shop in online because of their

interest in using new technologies to search for product information and

compare and evaluate alternatives (Wood, 2002).

11
For educational level, higher educated consumers are more likely to

use the internet for their shopping medium because they are more

computer literate (Burke, 2002).

In online shopping, it requires less effort and better decision making for

consumers who opt to purchase at the e-store (Jiang and Rosenbloom,

2005). Shoppers may save their time in e-shopping because they do

not have to go through any effort on travelling to a mall or saving their

time in other psychology factors such as traffic jam etc. Online

shopping increases search efficiency by eliminating travelling costs and

psychological costs brings convenience in e-shopping (Jayawardhena

et. al., 2009). Comparing online and traditional shopping, Alreck and

Settle (2002) found that internet shopping was viewed as saving more

time. Shoppers who value convenience can obtain the benefits of

product and services with less effort and this would have a positive

relationship with shoppers’ excitement (Jayawardhena et. al., 2009).

12
Ordered products are directly delivered to the door is the greatest

interest to many consumers because online shopping does not requires

us to leave the hours or office (Chen and Chang, 2003). According to

Monsuwe, Delleart and Ruyter (2004), the main drive of online

shopping is that the internet is time saving and accessible 24 hours a

day. Shopping in the internet saves time and effort because consumers

are able to shop any time in the comfort of their home; especially for

consumers who have little amount of free time because of extended

working hours (Wolfinbarger and Gilly, 2001).

Foreign Literature about Online Selling

Online shopping is the process of buying products through internet

without going to store or shop's location physically. Here people use

their credit/debit or other bank card for payment. The Internet has

undoubtedly changed how people go about their daily lives, but

perhaps the most dramatic change has come in how we shop for goods

and services.

13
Sure, it’s fun to go into a store to browse and try things on, but you

have to admit that nothing can beat the convenience of shopping from

home The younger generation seems to have recognized the perks of

online shopping and has picked up this new and cool form of retail

therapy. Generally speaking the trend of e-shopping has been

increased rapidly in the recent years with the development of internet

and due to the easy accessibility of internet usage. Easy access to

internet has driven consumers to shop online in fact according to the

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) communication policy

(2001), online shopping is third most popular activity on the internet

after email using and web browsing. Globally more than 627 million

people have done online shopping so far, World’s biggest online

shoppers include Germans and British. Books, airline

tickets/reservations, clothing/shoes videos/games and other electronic

products are the most popular items purchased on the internet.

(ACNielsen Report on Global Consumer Attitudes towards Online

Shopping, 2007).

14
Through e-shopping business firms are coordinating different marketing

activities such as market research, product development, inform

customers about product features, promotion, customer services,

customer feedback and so on. Online shopping is used as a medium

for communication and electronic commerce, it is to increase or

improve in value, quality and attractiveness of delivering customer

benefits and better satisfaction, that is why online shopping is more

convenience and day by day increasing its popularity. Not only benefits

but also risk is associated with online shopping. Generally speaking

internet users avert online shopping because of credit-card fraud, lack

of privacy, non-delivery risk, lack of guarantee of quality of goods and

services. Concerned authorities are devising policies to minimize the

risk involved in e-business. In Liao and Cheung (2000) words:”Fraud-

free electronic shopping” was introduced by UK in the early 1995 and

after two years Europe and Singapore introduced secured electronic

transaction (SET).

15
On the other hand E- commerce has been grown very fast because of

many advantages associated with buying on internet because of lower

transaction and search cost as compared to other types of shopping.

Through online shopping consumers can buy faster, more alternatives

and can order product and services with comparative lowest price.

(Cuneyt and Gautam 2004). Therefore Marketers have carefully

analyzed the consumers’ attitude and behavior towards the online

shopping and spend billions of dollars to facilitate all the demographics

of online shoppers. Consumer’s attitude towards online shopping refers

to their psychological state in terms of making purchases over the

Internet. Online buying behavior process refers to the products

purchased online. The process of online buying behavior consists of

five steps and it is similar to traditional.

16
Local Studies about Online Selling

A study from W.Smith, (2008) social marketing is defined as 'a process

for influencing human behavior on a large scale, using marketing

principles for the purpose of societal benefit rather than commercial

profit'.(p. 22, 23).

According to Pantiao, Hannahlyn B., (2009) because of their manual

system they have their services slow down. In their current system

problems like missing orders and loss of data possibly occur by the

implementation of the online ordering system anyone that have the

authorization to access the information, they could use them anywhere

and anytime.(p. 1)

Words from Panlilio and Diana (2005) customers today are diverse as

the clothes themselves. There are some who stick to the trends, some

who stick to classic styles and some who would like to be set apart from

the rest and hence come up with styles of their own.

17
Customers are seeking on ways in purchasing fashionable products

how and where.

According to George as Online Marketing, (2010) there are so many

benefits of online advertisement of a product. One is, you have wide

coverage makes your business to reach more audiences. Second is, it

is more affordable in online advertisement than other traditional

advertising cost. Third is, easy to track and measure conversation this

makes online advertising more ahead than traditional method of

advertising. (p. 14)

A work from Salunson and Ramon, (2007) Electronic Commerce is

consists primarily of the distributing, buying, selling, marketing and

servicing of products or services over electronic system such as the

internet, electronic devices and other computer networks.(p. 17)

Based on the work of Ernie, Rachel L, (2005), entrepreneurship is

encouraged because it is one of the contributions towards developing

an area and at the same time, improving the lives of more Filipinos.

18
The mentality of finishing a degree to work for a company serves only

the interest of rich employers. (p. 35)

A study from Katrina Tan, Business in Cyberspace, Entrepreneur

Philippines Magazine May 1, 2007, SYO Bnow, Inc., which stands for

Start your Online Business Now, is a company whose business is to

help other people start their own businesses. It recently launched the

Philippines' first online marketplace for goods and services, bringing

together buyers and sellers through an online Web portal that serves as

a complete virtual office. (p. 45)

According to Philippines News Agency, NCC's e-Services Portal

Launched, April 26, (2008), Total Information Management Corp. (TIM),

local IT, firm recently spearheaded the official launch of the Computer

Center's Philippine Government e-Services Portal. (21-22)

Tagged as "eSerbisyo.gov.ph" or "eSerbisyo" in the international

Internet community, the e-Services Portal was built by TIM trough a

Php 45-million contract awarded by NCC last 2 years.

19
This portal is designated to serve as a one-stop, all-in-one Internet

gateway for accessing comprehensive information and online frontline

services of multiple government agencies. "When we first embarked on

this project, we at TIM had the honor of being NCC's chosen solution."

Local Studies about Direct Selling

According to Euromonitor International Philippines Report direct selling

industry continues to grow, boosted by the increasing domestic

consumption that contributes to the 6.4% economic growth in the

second quarter of 2014 is growing faster than any other businesses in

the fast-moving consumer goods market in the Philippines. More

foreign direct selling groups are setting up their own entity in the

country to take part of this booming opportunity.

23
Today, many Filipinos are willing to buy goods and spend more through

direct selling channels. This can be explained by the fact that most of

the online direct selling companies offer the possibility to avail

aninstallment scheme and great discounts which allow consumers to

buy more. Additionally, direct selling can also be done through personal

connection such as friends or family which boosts the trust of a buyer.

Direct selling is definitely a great business model as many operating

costs can be minimized in comparison to retail business. For instance,

there is no need to maintain a shop since the goods can be sold directly

to the client using new technologies or independent partners thus

reducing the amount of staff. Online marketing also offers larger

exposure to customers making it a more powerful way to market your

products compared to traditional marketing.

Challenges in the Direct Selling industry in the Philippines

• The main challenge when starting a venture in the country is the

incorporation. Philippines remains one of the most difficulties to

24
incorporate in the world and its government has also imposed

limitations to foreign investors in this category. As a foreigner, setting

up a business under direct selling industry requires great local

connection as partnership with a local might be required in some cases.

• Depending on the product that an investor will bring in to the country,

there might be a need to deal with different government agencies such

as the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) or the Intellectual Property

Office (IPO). • Shipping your goods will also require your organization

to deal with the Bureau of Customs. An accreditation is required for

every company that wishes to import products in the Philippines. These

challenges can be solve easily if you establish a long term relationship

with a relevant partner.

Triple i consulting offers a complete solution for any investors willing to

establish its company presence in the country while eliminating the

complexity and minimizing the timeline of registration.

25
Local Literature about Direct Selling

Direct Selling is a form of sales where products or services are sold

directly face to face to customers, away from a fixed retail location.

Companies have the opportunity to connect with single customers,

groups, through online sales, catalog sales or by phone through direct

selling.

In the Philippines, a distinction is made between direct marketing and

direct selling. The basic difference lies in the closeness of contact.

Whereas direct marketing is usually conducted through phone, e-mail,

direct mail or courier, direct selling involves personal contact with a

prospective customer. Direct sellers typically visit customers at home,

at the workplace, or at points of contact other than a permanent retail

establishment.

26
The direct selling medium covers a wide array of products, including:

cosmetics, apparel, food supplements, fashion jewelry, books,

appliances, home items, personal care products and toys. A direct

seller may present to one or several customers at a time.

In recent years, the multi-level marketing approach to direct selling has

become increasingly popular. Multi-level Marketing is a form of Direct

Selling. This approach involves a “down line” system in which a direct

seller recruits others into his/her network, provides training and

mentorship to the downlines, and earns a fee or commission based on

the productivity or sales of the network. The basic difference is that

multi-level marketing companies generally allow their independent

direct sellers to earn overriding commissions from the sales of their

downlines

27
Synthesis

The primary concept of this researched literature and studies of the

presented problem is to give more knowledge about the comparison of

the direct selling and online selling and which of this is most preferred

by the consumers of Naic and also for us to find out why people choose

to buy directly or buy through online selling.

The found literature, both foreign and local, stated that there is a lot of

differences between direct and online selling not just its physical

appearance or how does it look or how it communicate with the

customer but also their differences on the process, advantage, mission

and how the consumer benefits from it. For past years, people enjoy

buying goods directly because they can directly see, hold and check

the product, they can ask for discounts, and they can enhance their

social life. On the other hand, the direct seller achieve its mission to

have seller-buyer relationship, to promote their product and of course to

gain money.

28
While, online selling has an easy access with the use of internet, now a

days, most of the new generation specially those teenagers really like

to buy online not just because it was trendy but also it can help for time

management because they can shop anytime and anywhere they want,

less hassle because they don't need to look for the product but the

product was looking for them, they can find things they want easily, and

pay easily. In addition, the online seller can have a positive view with

their customer if they did a great job like the consumer have their want

product delivered on time and again online seller gain

money. Therefore, based on the literature and studies consumers have

their own way of having good time on buying their wants.

Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents in detail the research design and

methodology of the study included here in description concerning

sample design, instruments used by the researcher for data collection

and analysis.

LOCALE OF THE STUDY

The study will be conducted in Halang, Naic Cavite

where Naic national Highschool is located. The researcher

chose this place to gathere the needed information in our

research.

30
RESEARCH DESIGN

The researcher will use descriptive study design as a method of

gathering data. .

Descriptive study is effective in analyzing non-qualified topics and

issues.

It’s advantage is the subject is being observed in a completely

natural and unchanged natural environment.

The disadvantage is there are no variables manipulated, there is no

way to statistically analyze the results. Many scientists regard this type

of study as very unreliable and ‘unscientific’.

It shows the observation in the phenomena of comparative

analysis between online shopping and actual shopping and knowing

what is more convenient to use.

31
POPULATION AND SAMPLE

The researcher will use a purposive sampling, a purposive sampling is

a non-probability sample that is selected based on characteristics of a

population and the objective of the study.

One of the major benefits of purposive sampling is the wide range

of sampling techniques that can be used across such qualitative research

designs; purposive sampling techniques that range from homogeneous

sampling through to critical case sampling, expert sampling, and more. But

the disadvantage of using a purposive sampling is that it can be difficult to

convince the reader that the judgement you used to select units to study

was appropriate.

In this study we have decided to conduct an interview to all grade 11

students in Naic National High School (MAIN) who shops both online and

actual.

The respondents will be the students who buy or shops both online

and actual in that way it would be easier for us to answer the given

research questions that we have made.

32
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researcher will conduct a unstructured interview in the study.

An unstructured interview is an interview in which there is no specific

set of predetermined questions, although the interviewers usually have

certain topics in mind that they wish to cover during the interview.

Unstructured interviews flow like an everyday conversation and tend to

be more informal and open-ended. This is in contrast to a structured

interview, when a list of predetermined questions is used.

It’s advantage is the respondents can freely express what they will

say because an open-ended type and the researchers can gather

variety of information. But it’s disadvantage is that the respondents

have the opportunity to tell lies.

33
DATA GATHERING

In this study that the researchers conducted, in depth interview were used.

A qualitative data collection method, in-depth interviews offer the opportunity to

capture rich, descriptive data about people’s behaviors, attitudes and

perceptions, and unfolding complex processes. They can be used as a

standalone research method or as part of a multi method design, depending on

the needs of the research.

It’s advantage is that the respondents can freely express and say what they

want to, but it’s disadvantage is that the respondents may unable or unwillingly

give the researcher information. The type of gathering data that we will use can

be very helpful in our research.

The diagram below contains the ff. flow of our data gathering procedure.

Creating questions for the
