Assignment II

1) Find the mean, median and standard deviation of the following grouped data.

Systolic blood pressure levels of 62 first-year male medical students (in mm Hg)

Class limit Frequency

90 – 99 2
100 – 109 6
110 -119 17
120 – 129 18
130 – 139 12
140 – 149 6
150 - 159 1

2) In a study undertaken in a certain village, the mean systolic blood pressure of a

group of 12 men aged 40 to 45 was found to be 129.4 mm Hg with a standard
deviation of 10.6. The other group (in the same village) which consisted of 15 men
aged 40 to 45 showed a mean systolic blood pressure of 133.6 mm Hg with
standard deviation of 15.2.

A) Find the mean systolic pressure of all the 27 men?

B) Calculate the pooled standard deviation of the two groups.

3. Birth weights of all live born infants born at a private hospital in a city, during a
1-week period are given below.

3265 3323 2581 2759 3260 3649 2841

3248 3245 3200 3609 3314 3484 3031
2838 3101 4146 2069 3541 2834

A) Comment on the distribution of the above data.

B) Find the appropriate measures of central tendency and dispersion that will
summarize the above distribution. Interpret your results.
4. Suppose that in a certain malarious area past experience indicates that the
probability of a person with a high fever will be positive for malaria is 0.6.
Consider 4 randomly selected patients (with high fever) in that same area.

A) What is the probability that no patient will be positive for malaria?

B) What is the probability that exactly one patient will be positive for malaria?

C) What is the probability that exactly two of the patients will be positive for
malaria?
D) What is the probability that exactly three of the patients will be positive for
malaria?
E) What is the probability that all patients will be positive for malaria?

F) Show that the required conditions of the above probability distribution are
satisfied.

5. The scores of a reference population on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for

Children (WISC) are normally distributed with μ = 100 and σ = 15.

I) Find the percentage of the above population with WISC scores

A) below 100 .
B) above 140 .
C) between 100 and 120.

II) What score must a child achieve on the WISC in order to fall in the top
5% of the population ?
