We are building an aquarium. It’s not my idea. My husband had one in a past life and he’s
always, deep down, wanted another one. For the 20­odd years we’ve been living in our house by
the sea, he’s served his fish obsession by catching and eating them. Then, a month ago, he
decided he had to have his fish tank, and he worked out where to put it. So he demolished some
shelves, created the space and the planning began. 

Since then I have been taken to aquarium shops, had endless discussions about gravel and
plants and fish, been subjected to videos on YouTube and trawled aquarium websites (if I am to
have an aquarium, it is going to be beautiful!). The base cabinet has been built, the tank
purchased and the filter, aerator, light, vacuum, thermometer and a myriad of other things have
multiplied every time I look at them. I am away for a week, but when I return it will all happen! 

It wasn’t till yesterday that the lightbulb moment came. At the moment I have Neptune conjunct
my 4th House Venus. My husband has Neptune squaring his 4th House Moon. We both also
currently have Saturn squares. Of course we will have an aquarium. And of course we will build
it ourselves. Isn’t astrology grand! 

We had a wonderful meeting with excellent attendance on June 10, and we learnt an incredible
amount about asking and answering a horary question. Thank you to Meredith Norman, Anne
Fryer, Joel Valentine and Kris Svendsen for sharing their knowledge, wisdom and expertise. 
I hope you will join us for a fascinating day on July 1 when financial astrologer Olga
Morales returns to run a workshop, where she will share with us her research on
lucky midpoints.  With so much doom, gloom and fear around the world it will be wonderful to
relax for a day and look at something positive! Olga’s expertise is being recognised around the
world; she ran a Gann Trading workshop in Hong Kong this month and she will be lecturing at
UAC next year. We loved her talk last year – I know this workshop will be just as enjoyable. I
hope to see you there!

an ancient point
  

Olga Morales is an experienced, Melbourne‐based astrologer, and will be

delivering a workshop 'Lucky Stars', Saturday July 1. Read Olga's introduction
to the Part of Furtune here, and follow her instructions at the end of this
article in preparation for her workshop.

What is Success? The Part of Fortune, or Pars Fortuna, can be an indicator of what that will look
like for each individual.

‘Ask not for some power that has been denied you. Ask what ability you
have which can be made to develop into something worthwhile. What is in
your hand?’ Just ask yourself­ What have I to GIVE that will add to the
happiness of those around me? You will be surprised how many simple
little ways of brightening the lives of others will present themselves, and
how great the reward these ways can bring, when multiplied by hundreds

The Part of Fortune in a chart can signify: 
How the individual is connected to the surrounding world 
Body and health 
Potential for prosperity 
And is also our happiness point 

Guido Bonatti wrote that the Part of Fortune:
 

Signifies the life, the body, and also its soul, its strength, fortune,
substance, and profit, that is: wealth and poverty, gold and silver,
heaviness or lightness of things bought in the marketplace, praise and
good reputation, and honours and recognition, good and evil, present and
future, hidden and manifest; and it has signification over everything.
The Part of Fortune is made of three very significant points in the horoscope: Ascendant – the
body; Moon – soul incarnated into a physical body; Sun­ life force. The Part of Fortune is also
said to be the point where the Moon would be if the Sun were exactly rising. 

Modern astrological software will calculate the Part of Fortune, but the ancient formula is as
follows:

Day Birth = Ascendant + Moon – Sun 
Night Birth = Ascendant + Sun – Moon (Part of Spirit)
  
The arc between the Moon and the Sun is then
projected from the Ascendant as the part of Fortune,
thus there is total symmetry. This is a classic midpoint
structure. 
  
The lunar phase at your birth mirrors the soul’s
development and potential for happiness, fulfilment and
luck. Pars Fortuna is our emotional happiness objective.
Astrologers have used Pars Fortuna for winning
lotteries, betting on horse races and for successful timing for enterprises. It is the most ancient
Arabic Part and the foundation that lead to the discovery and development of midpoints
structures by Alfred Witte. 

On a personal level, Pars Fortuna is not static; it evolves as the natal chart progresses ­
ultimately providing progressive gifts of potential fortune and happiness. Your Part of Fortune
(POF) is a beacon to your success. Where is the light shining for you? 
  
This is the distribution of the Part of Fortune in the chart of
politicians. The highest incidence occurs in the 10th House of
government. The house position of your POF can also indicate an
area where you will achieve success. 

Your POF also creates unique midpoints within your chart, often
giving you an indication of the way you may ultimately success in
life. 

Take for example Madonna’s POF midpoints: 
Sun/Neptune – ego /creativity/music 
Pluto/Node – power / persuasion/sexuality in the public 
Sun/Jupiter – ego/expansive optimistic approach

Mars, Madness and

Martians 
 With Anne Fryer

The Martians  are coming! The Martians are coming! 
  
At her recent Master Class on Mars, Mari Garcia looked at the famous 1938 radio broadcast
about ferocious aliens from Mars invading America. The play was so successful it sent New York
City into a mad panic. 
  
Mari went over the chart for the War of the Worlds broadcast, 30 October 1938, at 8.00 pm EST,
New York City, showing us Mars is in sect, angular but in detriment. So, a corrupt planet,
accidentally dignified is powerful and dangerous!  
  
What else can we say about this dangerous Mars? Sitting on the 4th house of home and country,
sextile Pluto and sextile its dispositor, stationary ruler Venus, semi­sextile a Mercury on the
negative, Mars ruled, Fixed Star Serpentis. The 5th house (entertainment) is also ruled by Mars.
A partile trine to the Moon in the 8th, opposite Pluto, showed the people were afraid of a sudden
and unusual death. Saturn in Aries in the 10th is also casting a sense of gloom over the chart.
Riveting stuff for the night of Halloween. And it did the job; it scared the living daylights out of
New York. 
  
After seeing all this, I wondered if the natal chart for New York City, with an out of bounds Mars
in partile conjunction with Venus in Sagittarius (high emotional excitement regarding foreigners)
would be triggered by the broadcast chart, but not so.  
  
 
  

  
The transiting, dangerous Mars was on the Ascendant of the New York chart, but I didn't think
that all its sextiles and trines were strong enough to reflect the panic response to the broadcast. 
  
However, the midpoints tell a different story. The transiting Mars partile transiting Moon (the
people) midpoint is the transiting, stationary and out of bounds Venus. An out of bounds Venus
can be very volatile ­ especially if it was being triggered by a separating sextile from a
dangerous Mars.  The volatile transiting Venus is midpointing the Uranus (panic) and Saturn
(fear) of the natal New York chart; the Martians are coming! The Martians are coming! 
  
Especially interesting is the Mercury at 19 Scorpio, it is conjunct Serpentis, a rather nasty fixed
star connected with Cerberus, gatekeeper at the gates of hell. And Mercury is the name of the
Theatre which broadcast The War of the Worlds that Halloween night, in 1938.
