1.3. Client and Server Software

The application BCClient.exe (herein after called Client) is the User Interface: it can be entered
introducing user name and password.
The application BCServer.exe (herein after called Server) is the program managing the instrument
and scheduling all of its activities; it also includes the Service software interface. This program is
always running in background and it is not visible to the user. It can be open by the service
operator through special and reserved user name and password to be considered “confidential”.

1.3.1. Starting BCClient and BCServer

Operation Name and Function

To start the User Interface software of the system,
click the icon in the desktop.

In normal installations the BCServer starts and works in

background; it also runs the serial communication
from PC to the instrument.

During initialization, the User Interface software (BC

Client) opens the Password window that requires
entering of user credentials.
Enter in the text fields the following strings:

User name: admin

Password: 12345678

And then press <Enter>.

If codes entered are correct,

the BCClient user software starts showing the Main
menu.

After initialization, on the bottom right side of the

Windows menu bar it’s included the icon (small black
“pipette”) of the software BCServer. It indicates that
BCServer is active and back-ground running.
Click on it with the right mouse button to access the
program BCServer and follow the instructions below
for entering. or

Operation Name and Function

After the right click on the small “pipette” icon, the
dialog window BCServer Login opens.
Introduce the following strings:

User: serviceadmin
Password: adminservice

Then click OK or press Enter.

If user and password are correct, the BCServer,

software service interface, opens and the monitor
will show three main windows (and one message
window – reserved – in the back ground).

To exit the BCClient use the following procedure: in the BCClient main panel click ShutDown»Yes
and wait for software shutdown; the BCClient will automatically close also the BCServer. Use this
procedure to exit BCServer when the Client is running; this procedure could anyway be not
always useful during maintenance. As an alternative, during testing, BCServer can be run in
another way. From Windows explorer run the application BCServer.exe under the following path:
C:\BCA\Comunication\Exe.
Only BCServer will start (not the BCClient – User Interface); to show the dialog window BCSever
Login, follow then the procedure given above.
In the case BCServer has been run directly from Windows Explorer; it is necessary to close it ONLY by
closing the lower window named BCServer (that’s the only way to shut it down) through the

Note: To shut down the BCServer ONLY, click on the “red X” on the top right
of the “BCServer” window in the bottom – never close the other windows.

X-position: this is the probe washing X-position; it must be calibrated with the sampler probe in
the center of the washing nozzle aside (pipe outlet for washing systemic solution pumped by
the probe peristaltic pump) – the solution, when flowing, must wet the entire diameter of the
probe. This X-coordinate is equal to the Wait/Travel position X-coordinate.
Y-position: this is the probe washing Y-position. The Washing Y-position must be set after
calibration of the Wait/Travel Y-position (see further on). It is set in the following way: find the
Y-coordinate for the Wait/Travel Y-position and add 90 steps, that’s the Washing Y-position
coordinate to memorize.

Cuvette Wheel.
Position for probe dispensing into the cuvette.
This Check Button, when selected, enables the visualization of ARM1 X-position when probe is
in cuvette wheel. Selection of this button disables the others.
In the Y Position field it is visualized the related ARM1 Y-axis coordinate (in motor steps).
X-position: this is the cuvette entering X-position. It must be calibrated with sampler probe in
the center of the cuvette below WHEN the cuvette tray has been previously calibrated and
positioned with cuvette #1 under the first needle pair of the washing station (see later on in
this document).
Y-position: this is the bottom protection Y-coordinate (limit); it must be calibrated when the
probe is about 2.5mm over the bottom of the cuvette to allow good mixing and to avoid
bubble generation; it means: this position must be about 35steps over the point in which the
sampling probe just starts touching the bottom of the cuvette – this can be recognized by
looking at the obstacle flag rising up. Alternatively you can use our special tool – a calibrated
metallic cuvette – for easier calibration: insert the special metal tool in place of cuvette #1
3 and just notice (by sending down the probe step by step) when the red liquid level detector
lamp activates “ON”: that’s the correct coordinate for calibration (in case of low LLD
sensitivity, use the former method).
When this Check Button is activated, more commands related to the Cuvette wheel are

Y-position: this is the sample tube/cup bottom protection Y-coordinate (limit); must be
calibrated when the probe is about 1.5/2.5mm over the bottom of the sample cup/tube. It is
possible to calibrate three possible Y-coordinate: sample cup, sample tube and cap piercing.
Sample cup is for OD=12mm 3mL cups (no adapter required), Sample tube is for primary tubes
(OD=12-13mm by H=75-100mm), Cap piercing is for special applications and it’s used only in
special custom versions.

The travel position is used by the system to temporary wash the sampler probe end between
the reagent aspiration and the sample aspiration.
It must be calibrated so that the probe can wash the outer surface for about 3-4mm from its
6 end through the side nozzle. This coordinate must be taken with the sampler probe in the
center of the washing nozzle aside. From the coordinate found it is possible to deduct the
Washing Y-position by adding 90 steps.
X-position: this is the probe travel X-position; it must be calibrated with the sampler probe in
the center of the washing nozzle aside (pipe outlet for washing systemic solution pumped by

Temperature Value.
D This field shows the incubation temperature to be reached and regulated by the
instrument (target temperature). It can be modified by keyboard but any modification
is superseded by the User Interface set value. It is suggested not to change the value
shown.
The target temperature is regulated within ±0.1°C (on the point of measurement). The
range to determine alarm conditions is ±1°C around the target temperature; note that
this range is not the real range of variation of fluid temperature into the reading
cuvettes, it is much narrower.
Tolerance level Low.
E This field shows the regulation low limit range for incubation temperature. When the
incubation temperature decreases below this value, the Heater Strip is turned ON
(Enable Temp. Control. LED is ON). This value can be modified by keyboard.
The typical tolerance range for the target temperature is ±0.1°C. It is then suggested to
maintain this value 0.1°C below the target temperature value (Temperature Value
field).
Tolerance level High.
F
This field shows the regulation high limit range for incubation temperature. When the
incubation temperature increases over this value, the Heater Strip is turned OFF (Enable
Temp. Control. LED is OFF). This value can be modified by keyboard.
The typical tolerance range for the target temperature is ±0.1°C. It is then suggested to
maintain this value 0.1°C over the target temperature value (Temperature Value field).

Alarm level Low.

G This field shows the alarm low limit range for incubation temperature. When the
incubation temperature decreases below this value, the software generates an alarm
(Incubation temperature out of range). This value can be modified by keyboard.
The typical tolerance range for the target temperature is ±1°C. It is then suggested to
maintain this value 1°C below the target temperature value (Temperature Value field).
Alarm level High.

Q.ty Dil Sample.

A This field shows the total volume (in microliters) to be dispensed in the cuvette for any
sample dilution operation (pre- and post-dilutions). This volume is the sum of diluent
volume and sample volume (respecting the given dilution ratio). This volume can be
modified by keyboard.
6 The value of 400µL is the typical volume to be used for Clinical Chemistry. Remember
that cuvette dead volume is fixed to 100µL.

Q.ty Dil Standard.

B This field shows the total volume (in microliters) to be dispensed in the cuvette for any
standard/calibrator single dilution operation. This volume is the sum of diluent volume
and standard volume (respecting the ratio required for Calibration Curves
construction). This value can be modified by keyboard.
The value of 200µL is the typical volume to be used (especially for methods that are
requiring highest sample volume and that are run in triplicate). Remember that cuvette
dead volume is fixed to 100µL.

Start Read Cycle (Calibration).

Click this button when a Filter Gain Calibration cycle must be run. This cycle is composed by
two phases:
 The first phase includes washing of all cuvettes and read of “autozero” at 340nm
wavelength (transparent value read on cuvette filled with systemic solution) at gain=1
(dig. pot. value=15). At the end of this phase the cuvette with higher value is taken into
consideration and the ratio between filters is calculated on it, in order to equalize filter
6
gains to reach the target value for transparent (zero). The target value is set in the field
ABS. for 340. The calculated gains are then stored in memory by the software and
they will be used for further reading operations.
 The second phase includes a complete Autozero cycle at all wavelength in order to
store in the instrument memory the real “zero values” for all cuvettes and for all filters,
each of them read with the real stored filter gain.
It doesn’t include tubes refilling.

ABS. for 340.
This field shows the target value to be reached during calibration; it fixes the dynamic range.
If needed it is possible to modify this value even if it has been fixed at factory for best
8 performance. Negative values are not allowed. Values ranges from 0 to 65535: typical value is
20000 that gives signal-to-noise ratio optimization (never set values below 10000 nor over
60000).
Introduce values by keyboard. Click on Save to store the new value.
% Absolute Read OK.
This field shows the percentage value that fixes the threshold for cuvette to be marked as dirty.
When the transparent (zero) value read on a cuvette exceeds this percentage of the value
fixed in the field “ABS. for 340”, that cuvette is marked as dirty and it is no more used by the
9 system until it is detected as clean again (cuvette could be damaged or too dirty).
If needed, it is possible to modify this value even if it has been fixed at factory for best
performance. Negative values are not allowed. Values ranges from 0 to 100: typical value is
30%.
Introduce values by keyboard. Click on Save to store the new value.
Gain percent.
This field shows the gain percentage value that fixes the threshold for filters to generate an
alarm for aged or damaged filter. When the transparent (zero) value read during calibration
on certain filter gives a gain such that the gain stored at factory is less than the given
10 percentage of the new value (that means too high gain), an alarm is generated.
If needed, it is possible to modify this value even if it has been fixed at factory for best
performance. Negative values are not allowed. Values ranges from 0 to 100: typical value is
50%.
Introduce values by keyboard. Click on Save to store the new value.
Min abs Lamp.
This field shows the value for readings below which an alarm is generated: if more than 10
consecutive readings give a value below that one, the lamp is detected as burned.
11 If needed, it is possible to modify this value even if it has been fixed at factory for best
performance. Negative values are not allowed. Values ranges from 0 to 65535: typical value is

Purge A.
E Command used to Purge Calibrant A into ISE Module inlet port. The cycle consists in
purging Calibrant A from Reagent Pack, in order to fill tubing. Calibrant A is purged
through the related peristaltic pump with a given short quantity. Several purge
commands can be needed and the waste pump is automatically enabled at the end
of each cycle. When the Calibrant A is in front of electrodes the Debug Window will
show the answer message: “ISE!”.

purging Calibrant B from Reagent Pack, in order to fill tubing. Calibrant B is purged
through the related peristaltic pump with a given short quantity. Several purge
commands can be needed and the waste pump is automatically enabled at the end
of each cycle. When the Calibrant A is in front of electrodes the Debug Window will
show the answer message: “ISE!”. After a Purge B run always a Purge A command to
leave Calibrant A in front of the electrodes.
Bubble Cal.
G This command runs the check and the calibration of the bubble detector (that
nevertheless is automatically performed by the instrument at the system start up during
Warming Up). At the end the Debug Window will show the result of the calibration.
Cal.
H Command used for running the ISE Module “electrodes calibration”. The ISE Module will
automatically cycle Calibrant A and Calibrant B in front of the electrodes and provides
mV measurement (this is automatically performed by the instrument at the system start
up during Warming Up cycle). One of these calibrations is required at the beginning of
every day. Calibration is also automatically performed after 8 hours and after any Clean
Cycle. At the end the Debug Window will show the result of the calibration in terms of
mV (two measures).
The millivolt readings coming from the calibration are then used to set up a relationship
between sample concentration and electrode millivolt output. The change in millivolts
per change in concentration is the slope of the electrode. The slope of the electrodes is
reported in mv/dec (millivolts per decade change in concentration), and should be
within the following limits:
Li+ 47-64 mV/dec, Na+ 52-64 mV/dec, K+ 52-64 mV/dec, Cl- 40-55 mV/dec
The ISE Module Calibration Cycle performs two successive calibrations. The slopes must
be repeatable within 1.5 mV/decade change.
Calibration is also automatically performed after 8 hours and after any Clean Cycle.

SOFTWARE APPLICATION FOR SERVICE

1.4. MSTool – Service SW Tool for Altair Instruments

This tool is provided to distributors of the Altair™ 240 instrument and it helps authorized
service personnel to do common repetitive jobs on the instruments and helps calibration.
MSTool has been designed to work only with software version 2.x and higher.
It has been designed in order to help operators during servicing or recalibrating
instruments and also to do activity like method management (i.e.: reset of analysis
counter, …) and Log management (i.e.: Los files exporting or deleting).

MSTool can be launched in a Personal Computer where Altair™ software is actually

installed but not contemporary running. Then, in order to avoid connection problems and
data corruption, Altair™ Software (BCClient and BCServer) must be previously closed.
MSTool also requires administrator privileges on the computer and a log-in password, set
as adminservice.

Note: Refer to the last valid revision of the MSTool Guide code MNU-10936-01-_ , it gives
information and detailed user instructions about the use of this tool.
