1. INTRODUCTION
People can survive without food for several weeks, because the body will gradually switch to
using stored fat and protein to make its energy. But cut off your water supply and you'll be dead
within days. Water equals life: it's as simple as that. Around two thirds of the body is H2O.
Even the bones, contain about 25 percent water. Definitely, water is so important to our lives,
it's hardly surprising we like it clean, pure, and tasty. That's one reason people spend so
much money on water filters that can remove any harmful impurities. Our purpose is to make
a homemade water filter that can be used in basic needs of people.

1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Many contaminants can be dangerous—but depending on the quality standards, others are
removed to improve the water's smell, taste, and appearance.
Surface water sources should be carefully monitored for the presence of unusual types or
levels of microbial/disease causing contaminants.
The treatment plant itself must be kept secure from vandalism and terrorism. It is not possible to
Tell whether water is safe to drink just by looking at it.
Simple procedures such as boiling or the use of a homemade filter are some ways to keep
The water clean.

1.2 QUESTION PROBLEM

How can a homemade water filter make pond water clean enough to be used in basic needs
of people?

1.3 OBJECTIVES

1.3.1General Objective
To demonstrate the procedure of homemade water filter can be used to purify the water for
basic needs.

1.3.2 Specific Objectives

- Provide clean healthy water for cooking as well as drinking using a homemade water filter.
- To offer clean water for people don´t have this Access.

1.4. JUSTIFICATION

Living in the industrialized world, we are fortunate because we don't have to worry about the
quality of our drinking water. Our community has the means to clean and provide water to us.
But in many parts of the world, people don't have this luxury. Whether it is due to war or poverty,
the lack of clean water leads to many health and social problems. In this environmental engineering
science project, we will learn about a homemade method to filter out impurities in contaminated
water, producing clean water for people who don't have access to it, and you will also experiment
with filtering different kinds of liquids.
2.STATE OF ART

2.1 BACKGROUND

Water in lakes, rivers and swamps often contains impurities that make it look and smell bad.
The water may also contain bacteria and other microbiological organisms that can cause disease.
Consequently, water from surface sources must be "cleaned" before it can be consumed by people.
Seventy percent of the Earth is covered with water.

However, only about three percent that can be used for drinking water. While many people in the

United States have clean, drinkable water from their kitchen sink, most of the people around the

world do not have access to clean water and must boil or filter their water.

2.2 THEORICAL FRAMEWORK

Water purification is the removal of contaminants from raw water to produce drinking water that is pure
enough for human consumption or for industrial use.
Substances that are removed during the process include parasites (such as Giardia or Cryptosporidium),
bacteria, algae, viruses, fungi, minerals (including toxic metals such as Lead, Copper etc.), and man-made
chemical pollutants.
Water filters use two different techniques to remove dirt. Physical filtration means straining water to
remove larger impurities. In other words, a physical filter is a glorified sieve—maybe a piece of thin
gauze or a very fine textile membrane.
Another method of filtering, chemical filtration, involves passing water through an active material
that removes impurities chemically as they pass through.

3. METHODOLOGY
3.1 TYPE OF STUDY :
Descriptive: Many of the materials used to make a homemade water filter can be found around the house
and recycled for the purpose of this project. As part of the experiment, children can test different materials to
determine which materials produce the cleanest water.
3.2 METHODOLOGY. SCIENTIFIC METHOD

 QUESTION:

How can a homemade water filter make pond water clean enough to be used in basic needs
of people?

 RESEARCH

Water Filter :is a general term that refers to any system or process that is used to filter out particles
and pollutants from water. It doesn't necessarily need to be a purifier to make the cut. Anything
that removes any amount of particles, sediment, bacteria, and the chlorine taste can be called
water filtration. If it has a filter of any type, it's a filtration system.
Many of the materials used to make a homemade water filter can be found around the house and
recycled for the purpose of this project

Each layer of the homemade water filter has a purpose. Gravel or small stones are used to filter out
large sediments, like leaves or insects, whereas sand is used to remove fine impurities. Finally,
the activated charcoal removes contaminants and impurities through chemical absorption.

 HYPOTHESIS :

If water containing bacteria and dirt, goes through the water filter, then the water will be clearer
after filtration, because material like sand, dirt and carbón will clean the water and remove the dirt.

 FACT AND OBSERVATION:

 EXPERIMENT:
Homemade Simple Water filter

Materials
 Plastic soda or juice bottle
 Vase or tall drinking glass
 Gravel or small stones
 Clean Sand
 Activated Charcoal
 Cotton balls, small cloth or coffee filter
 Gardening dirt
 Water
 Scissors or knife
Instructions
1. Cut off the bottom of an old plastic soda or juice bottle using scissors or a knife.
2. Place the bottle upside down into the vase or tall drinking glass.
3. Place cotton balls, cloth, or a coffee filter inside the bottle as the first layer. The first layer should be about one to
two inches thick.
4. Add an inch of activated charcoal as the second layer on top of the cotton layer.
5. Over the charcoal, add about two inches of gravel or small stones as the third layer.
6. Add about three to four inches of clean sand on top of the gravel.
7. Add gravel to the bottle as the final layer. Leave about a half inch of space from the top of the upside down bottle.
8. Add dirt to a glass of water to create muddy water. Alternatively, get creative and add other things like
glitter, beads, cooking oil or other materials to make dirty water.
9. Pour the glass of muddy water on top of the homemade water filter and watch the water drip clean into the glass below.
