FUEL-GAS FILTER SEPARATORS

1.0 SCOPE

This specification covers the minimum technical requirements for the

design, manufacture, inspection and testing of fuel-gas filter separators.
For a specific filter separator, this specification shall be used in
conjunction with the Technical Requirements. Any exceptions to the
requirements of this specification shall be submitted in writing for
resolution by the Company.

2.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

a. A list of the applicable standards and codes is provided in Appendix I.

b. The data sheet Filter, GC 95429, applies to this specification.

3.0 REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Characteristics

3.1.1 Performance

a. Fuel-gas filter separators shall be capable of continuous service at

the operating conditions specified in the Technical Requirements.

b. Filter separators shall be sized and rated to meet the maximum and
minimum pressure and temperature requirements at the specified
fuel-gas rates.

c. Separators shall operate efficiently over the full range of operating

conditions with a maximum initial (clean) pressure loss of 1 pound
per square inch (PSI). Vendor shall state the maximum allowable
(dirty) pressure loss (PSI) in the proposal which shall, in no case,
ever exceed 10 PSI.

d. The separators shall have a minimum service life of 20 years.

e. The fuel-gas filter separator configuration (either vertical or

horizontal) shall be efficient enough to remove 98 percent of
5-micron and larger solid contaminants and entrained liquids from
the fuel-gas stream at a minimum, unless specified otherwise.

f. Fuel-gas throughput capacity and liquid removal capability shall not

be less than that specified.

g. The design of filter separators is proprietary and a manufacturer

should be consulted for specific size and recommendations.

h. The filter-separator shall contain an inlet separator, a

filter-coalescer, a mist extractor and a liquid collection and removal
section.

3.2 Design and Construction

3.2.1 General

a. Fuel-gas filter separators shall be designed, constructed, inspected

and tested in accordance with the Technical Requirements, and the
ASME Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division, including the latest
addenda.

b. Filter separators shall be code stamped in accordance with ASME

Code.

c. The top head of fuel-gas filter separators shall be a quick-opening

"Dog" type or flanged with a davit.

3.2.2 Materials

The construction materials for vessels shall conform to the ASME code
and the Technical Requirements, unless otherwise specified.

3.2.3 Filter Section

3.2.3.1 General

a. Filters shall be designed so that the filter surface will be 50 percent

coated with solids before an appreciable pressure loss occurs.

b. The filter media shall be capable of removing 98 percent of all solid

and liquid particles 5 microns and larger when operating between 10
percent and 100 percent of the rated capacity.

3.2.3.2 Filter Elements

a. Replaceable cartridge type filters shall be provided.

b. Filter elements shall have a perforated steel core with a fiberglass

filter medium.

c. The filter elements shall be provided with an outside cloth cover to

protect personnel from the fiberglass filter medium.

d. The filter elements shall be provided with an inside barrier to prevent

fiberglass from passing through the filter.

e. Two spare sets of filter elements shall be shipped with the unit.

f. Filter elements located in line with the inlet nozzle shall have
impingement protection.
g. The filter elements shall provide efficient service for a minimum of 6
months.

h. All internals shall be bolted in place to permit removal through the

head.

3.2.3.3 Tubesheets

a. Tubesheets shall be designed to withstand either a pressure

differential equal to the vessel maximum working pressure or the
filter collapse pressure plus 20 PSI, whichever is less.

b. The closure end of tubes shall be adequately supported to prevent

vibration or excessive strain on the tubesheet end.

c. Tubesheet pipes shall be provided to support the filter elements

throughout the total length of the elements. The tube pipes shall be
seal-welded to the tubesheet.

3.2.4 Mist Eliminators

The mist eliminators shall be of the stainless steel wire-mesh type,

unless otherwise specified.

3.2.5 Instruments and Controls

a. Couplings shall be provided on the vessel shell for monitoring the

differential pressure across both the filter elements and the mist
eliminator.

b. High-level shutdown and/or alarm connections shall be provided.

c. Two sets of gauge-glass assemblies and drain connectors shall be

provided, one for each section of the filter separator. The assemblies
and piping shall be in accordance with the Technical Requirements.

3.3 Contractor Requirements

Contractor requirements shall be in accordance with the Technical

Requirements.

3.4 Documentation Requirements

Documentation shall be provided in accordance with the Technical

Requirements.
