ePortfolio Proposal Draft

Audience and Purpose

The purpose of my ePortfolio is to satisfy the requirements of the TQS 6+ Category for
BC Teachers. As a Technology Education teacher, it is commonly misunderstood in our field as
to what we teach to the student body. While we do provide trades training and practical
experiences for students in our classrooms, Tech Ed teachers also do bridge the gap between
school based learning and work based learning scenarios. In order to do justice to this layered
education, a technology education teacher should be up to date with the latest education
technology and information integration for different learning environments. As a young teacher,
my purpose is to not only satisfy the TQS standards but to demonstrate my abilities as an
individual to develop and integrate curriculum. Eventually, I’d like to work my way into
instructional design, and/or curriculum development and integration at the school board office
level. In addition, I’d like the development of my ePortfolio to preserve key ideas and concepts
of my journey to which I can share with other lifelong learners and act as a conversation starter
for collegial collaboration. The production of my ePortfolio would then assist as a platform for my
future employers, professors, colleagues and students to view my journey through education
technology and what I can provide for them as individuals. My ePortfolio will hopefully be a
career-long tool for myself to which I can constantly update with continual additions of education
technology, philosophy and anecdotal experiences as a professional.

Goals

1) To improve my understanding of education philosophy and the application of new and

old theories to classroom and training practices for the purpose of curriculum design,
implementation, evaluation and assessment.

2) To integrate and utilize education technology in a justified manner to support my

personal and professional practices while upholding the highest standards of curriculum
delivery and exceptional assessment of student abilities.

3) To understand the impact of education technology and philosophy in the context of

social, cultural, environmental and other external factors which influence the experience
and outcomes of best practices in student learning.

A statement explaining why these goals are important to you and your career

These goals are important to me and my career because of my passion as an educator.

As a student, I had found that my curiosity has taken me to different heights in my learning and
to strive for understanding more information. In a personal manner, I have developed my
learning profile through the support of my parents, peers, teachers and professors to which I
have found gaps in my classroom experiences in regards to presentation, learning development
and assessment. These experiences translate the goals I have set out for myself from personal
to professional because I want to always be able to provide the guidance and well-rounded
learning experience for my students. As a teacher, I always strive to produce quality content and
curriculum while guiding my students in an applicable and practical manner for their lives
outside of the classroom. These goals I have set out for myself will not only assist me in
understanding appropriate and successful techniques in developing curriculum and sharing my
knowledge, but to allow myself to continually learn about student experience and teaching
outside of the classroom - within the realm of child development and influential factors of their
lives.

A sample of some artifacts that may be used to demonstrate how your goals have been
achieved.

This list is a work in progress, but I have identified a few key projects I have completed in my
classes during my MET journey that would provide insight to how my goals have been achieved.

A note of any key references, theories or resources you plan to use.

To be continually updated as I complete my proposal. It will be a combination and collaboration

of references, theories and resources I have used in my artifacts to start and will be
supplemented by additional resources I have researched in the completion of my proposal and
beginning of my ePortfolio development. Notably, constructivism and a few other related
theories.

The metaphor you intend to use to structure your ePortfolio and demonstrate how you
achieved your goals and how it fits into your own learning.

The idea of the “core” sets a precedence for historical educational technology and development,
while the peripherals speak to the emerging philosophies, applications and representation of
new learning.

A Tree and its Growth in Nature: The symbol of a tree depicts the natural cycle of life and how it
is shaped by its environment. Similar to a human being, the product of nurture and nature can
change the outcomes of the trees growth. This would reflect the idea that a student in certain
environments will be able to succeed in different ways with the correct tools and support. The
core courses are represented by the “roots” of a tree and show how our learning is grounded in
our foundations of learning. The branches will represent the elective courses to where us as
individual learners branch into fields of study within our comfort zone. The leaves may represent
stepping out of our comfort zones into courses that were a challenge for us. The growth of a
tree also symbolizes the growth of us as lifelong learners because trees never stop growing.
Although its height may come to a a slow halt, it continues to grow outwards (growth rings
around tree trunk) similar to how we may reach a high mastery level in our major profession or
field of study, but continue to expand our knowledge through additional third party measures
(hobbies, professional development etc.) A tree may have the season change, weather and the
leaves fall, but the cycle of growth continues which represents how an individual might hit
roadblocks in their learning but work through challenges to continue to grow.

The platform you expect to use to build your ePortfolio, with a discussion of its pros and
cons. Why did you choose it? How will the media/tools/ platform chosen be used to
effectively enhance your purpose?

I expect to use a third-party website development tool to build my ePortfolio. Initially, I wanted to
create my own website with HTML and Java tools to enhance my personal knowledge and
experience in website development. However, after careful consideration, I decided to use Wix.
The reason I had decided on Wix is because it allows a plug-and-play aspect to integrating
content but it has the ability to display HTML code. Therefore, when I have the time to re-create
my ePortfolio on to my own platform, I’ll be able to re-use some of my content from the
development of my ePortfolio for this assignment. Wix has a simple interface and would allow
me to effectively edit my content as the development process occurs and can be published to fit
on a variety of browsers and computers. Wix allows for YouTube embedded material, PPT
presentations and other accessible tools for effective presentation of all my artifacts. I initially
wanted to use Google Sites as I have had experience in Wix and Weebly, and wanted to
expand my skill set on third party sites. However, Google Sites has a lot of FOIPPA issues in
the school system and would make it difficult as my career trajectory is aimed at staying within
the Canadian education system.

The expected outcomes of your ePortfolio project: What is the significance to you of this
ePortfolio project? What can you learn in this process?

The expected outcome of my ePortfolio project is to serve a lesson in reflection and to set up a
foundation of success for me to continually improve upon my skill set as a teacher. As a
reflection of my MET Journey, I expect to review and summarize all of my submitted literature,
theories, practices and learning experiences for myself to reflect upon and for others to share
the experience. The significance in this is to help myself come to an appreciation of the
foundation of knowledge and wealth of experiences I have built in this program but to bring the
collaboration, work ethic, research techniques and integration/implementation skills with me into
my future professional practice. An additional outcome of my ePortfolio project is to have a
tangible representation of my graduate studies to present to future employers, colleagues,
parents and students to provide an insight into my personal knowledge and connections
between theory and practice.

A draft assessment rubric that you would like to propose as appropriate for your
ePortfolio.

The draft assessment rubric I’d like to propose is a work in progress as I will be creating one to
reflect similar rubrics used in the school system. I’d like to have categories of not yet meeting, all
the way to exceptional but what is depicted in each category will yet to be determined. Below is
a beginning sample of how I’d like to rubric for my ePortfolio to be presented.
