BARANGAY

PINEDA
PASIG CITY
Geography

Historical background

Barangay Pineda is one of the 30 barangays in Pasig. It has a land

area of 59 hectares.

It is situated in the western part of the city. It is bounded by Barangay

Kapitolyo in the North, Brgy. Bagong Ilog in the east, Mandaluyong in the
west and Makati in the South.

Population as of year 2002 is 16,655.

The name Pineda is believed to be derived from a Spanish official

who served for the barrio during old days. It used to be a settlement for
families from Malapad-na-Bato, a barrio across the Pasig River. During the
1800s, Ventura Oliveros, Epifania Cruz and Miguel Cruz were barrio
lieutenants during the Spanish regime. At that time, Pineda remained
insignificant. However, just before the Philippine Revolution, it became a
refuge for the Tulisanes, fugitives and rebels from nearby provinces like
Bulacan, Cavite and Laguna. It was said that a lot of Andres Bonifacio’s
followers are from there.

During the American regime, inhabitants of Pineda washed the

clothes and uniforms of the American soldiers (stationed at Fort McKinley –
now Fort Bonifacio) in the Pasig River.

Nowadays, Pineda is a progressive barangay due to the factories

built there which improved the lives of its inhabitants

UGONG
PASIG CITY
Geography

Ugong is a highly urbanized barangay in Pasig. Today, Brgy. Ugong

is further subdivided into south which is the Pasig city part, while the
northern boundary of Ugong "Ugong Norte in filipino" was under the city of
Quezon.
Historical Background
Historical records show that the Barrio that was called Ugong has
been in existence since 1572. The primary livelihood of the residents then
was farming and fishing but they were also known to provide laundry
service due to their close proximity to the river.
Etymology
According to legends, sometime during the early part of the Spanish era,
three Spaniards got lost and found themselves in a barrio with so many
bamboo trees. They went around asking for the name of the barrio but the
barriofolks could not understand Spanish thus they miscontrued that the
strangers were asking what was the strange sound they were hearing.
Since winds blowing through the bamboo trees create a rustling sound, the
townfolks replied, “Hugong, hugong”. The Spaniards, having difficulty with
the letter “h”, pronounced it as “ugong” which eventually became the name
of the barrio.
The present Barangay Ugong was created by virtue of Presidential
Decree No. 557 which was signed by former President Ferdinand Marcos
on September 21, 1974, transforming this humble Barrio into a Barangay.
Ugong Day is celebrated every second Sunday of November
coinciding with the feast of the Nuestra Senora Del Rosario, the
Patron Saint of Barangay Ugong. In recent years, the celebration has
extended a few days prior to the actual date to give way to several
activities.
Past History
The residents of Ugong played their part during the different eras in
Philippine history. The Spanish era saw several residents joining the
Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan
(KKK) who fought and died fighting for our freedom while the American and
Japanese occupations saw the emergence of the Hunters ROTC Guerillas
which was co-founded by Col. Felix Bernal, a barrio cadet, and several
other Ugong residents. Several other Ugong residents gave their lives
during World War II fighting against the Japanese and dying in battle or in
the infamous Bataan Death March.
Industrial to Commercial
The end of WWII signalled another milestone in the development of
Barangay Ugong when several large factories established their businesses
within its boundaries. Manufacturing companies such as Union Glass and
Container, General Milling, International Pipe Industries, and others
provided new livelihood opportunities to Ugong residents. Ugong has
become an industrial hub thanks to the influx of these manufacturing
giants.
However, in recent years, commercial establishments started to emerge
and take the place of these factories. Several commercial arfeas have been
established offering various products and services: Tiendesitas, Metrowalk,
Ortigas Home Depot, SM Supercenter, etc.
Residential Haven
In the early seventies, Ortigas and Company started developing the
vast land of Ugong into several exclusive subdivisions that caters to upper
class families. These subdivisions (Valle Verde 1 – 6 and several
townhouses and condominiums) now occupy more or less fifty percent
(50%) of the total land area of the Barangay. The rest of the land is divided
among commercial, industrial, institutional and mid to lower class
residential areas.
Present Thrust
The Ugong of today aims to promote a vibrant community gearing
towards environmental awareness and economic development.

Barangay Ugong Eco-Waste Management System

(A Short History)
In 1998, former Barangay Chairman Alejandro E. Santiago, through
his “Bawas Basura, Dagdag Kita” program, launched the Barangay Ugong
Eco-Waste Management System which encouraged waste segregation and
collection of recyclable and biodegradable waste. The program promoted
waste segregation at the source (i.e. households and factories) whereby
the Barangay collectors buy recyclable materials from homeowners and
surrounding establishments. Recyclable items are stored in an Ecology
Center where they await collection by recycling companies.
Kitchen wastes and other biodegradable materials are brought to the
Barangay’s composting area where they are treated and prepared for
composting.
Waste segregation has also promoted income generation for
residents of this Barangay. Aside from the income earned from collected
recyclables, women, especially mothers, were given the chance for
livelihood opportunities through the KILUS Foundation Multi Purpose
Cooperative, Inc., the NGO partner of the Barangay. This organization
recycles used juice packs or doy packs into utility bags, slippers, tablemats
and others, which are exported to other countries.
Various Barangay Ordinances and Resolutions were enacted
particularly for the Barangay’s Eco-Waste Management programs. Through
the stewardship of succeeding Barangay Officials, the Barangay has ably
sustained the programs that were laid down by now City Councilor
Alejandro E. Santiago. At present, the Barangay Government of Ugong is
developing other means to utilize recyclable materials in ways that would
benefit the community such as a street décor contest using recyclable and
waste materials, which was aimed at raising the recycling awareness of the
community.

Linear Park

MANILA, Philippines - The newly constructed Pasong Tamo Linear Park

opened to the public last Thursday, the first of several park development
and bank improvements to be made over the next years in three tributaries
of the Pasig River in Quezon City.

The Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC), in partnership with the

local government of Quezon City, inaugurated on Jan. 22 the 380-meter
linear park built along the 2.4-kilometer Pasong Tamo Creek.

The paved linear park is adorned with landscaped indigenous flowers and
plants and fitted with park benches. At night, the strip garden is lit by solar-
powered lampposts.

Jericho Von Miranda, communications head of the PRRC said the next two
phases of development of the Pasong Tamo Creek Linear Park would be
carried out in the next few years.

“This will lead other projects in Pasig River tributaries here in Quezon City,”
he said. Other than the Pasong Tamo Creek, two other tributaries of the
Pasig River in Quezon City would be cleaned and developed.
Similar linear parks, he said, would be constructed along Culiat and San
Francisco Rivers.

Dredging and desilting activities are now underway in the San Francisco
River near Araneta Avenue.

The PRRC is an attached agency of the Department of Environment and

Natural Resources (DENR) mandated to transform Pasig River and its
environs into clean and livable communities.

The PRRC develops waterways in three stages: dredging and desilting to

gradually restoring the water quality in the Pasig River and its tributaries
into class-C level, the effluent standard for maintaining aquatic life and
recreational use such as boating.

The agency next conducts bank improvement to strengthen creek and river
banks and prevent erosion and flooding and, lastly, linear park
development to turn these tributaries into leisure areas.

“But now we are focusing not only on the environs of the Pasig River but on
its tributaries as well,” said Miranda.

PRRC partnered in 2009 with Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig, the river
rehabilitation project of ABS-CBN Foundation to take on the rehabilitation
of several Pasig River tributaries.

Under this partnership, the rehabilitation of several metro waterways has

been undertaken. These include the Estero de Paco, Estero de San
Miguel, Estero de Aviles, Estero de Uli-Uli, Estero de Quiapo and Estero de
San Sebastian.

The PRRC has a budget of P48.56 million for the development of the
Pasong Tamo Creek Linear Park. Out of this allocation, only P9.53 million
has been used.

During the inauguration, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista expressed

continuous support for the development of Pasig River tributaries in the
city.

Fiestas, patron, cultural events

The Barangay’s patron is San Guillermo and the date of their fiesta is

BARANGAY
ORANBO
PASIG CITY
Geography

Historical background

Barangay Oranbo is trapezoid in shape and is ideally situated on the

Northern part of Pasig, bounded on the North by San Antonio Village; on
the North East by Barrio Kapitolyo; on the South East by Barangay Pineda;
on the South by Barangay Bagong Ilog and on the West of Barangay
Ugong. This former sleepy barrio is now blossoming into a commercial and
Industrial community and once the seat of the Provincial Government of
Rizal.
Oranbo was once a very sparsely populated hilly portion of the Ortigas
Estate. It was only after the erection of a monumental edefice, the Rizal
Provincial Capitol Building in a 12 hectare- land donated by Ortigas and
Company under the supervision of Engr. Mariano G. Bondoc, during the
term of the former Rizal Governor, Dr. Sixto Antonio that the place came to
be known as one of the promising barangay of Pasig . Since then the barrio
came to be habitated until the first residents requested that it be given a
name. So in 1953, a coined name ORANBO was given to the barrio in
respect to the three people who made possible the acquisiton of the
land. OR came from the first two letters of ORTIGAS the donor of the
land, An came from the first two letters of ANTONIO, the Provincial
Governor of Rizal at that time and BO came from the first two letters
of BONDOC who supervised the transfer and subdivision of the area.
Thereafter, the place is now popularly known as ORANBO, a very
promising community. As an independent community, it has also its barrio
officials to look after its safety, peace, security, cleanliness and
beautification. The first Barangay Captain of Oranbo was CORNELIO T.
PENEYRA, succeeded by IRENEO DIAS, then by ADELA JAVIER and the
late TIRSO PAAT, then ONEZIMO JAVIER, then AVELINO PAGALUNAN
and NATI T. DALINA. The present leader is a very young and full of vision
personality who served as a top Barangay Kagawad RICHIE M. PUA
