a prayer?

Thank you so much Divine.

Good Morning class! Good morning Ma’am

Arrange first your chairs and pick up those

dirts around you before you sit down.

B. Motivation

I have here some pictures. You have to tell

me the things they are doing in their own
scene. I will write your answers on the
board.

What do you think the players are doing

particularly the one in a red shirt? He is shooting.
Yes, he is shooting a what? He’s shooting a ball ma’am.

Correct, the basketball player is shooting

the ball.

How about this next picture?

What does the girl doing in the picture? The girl is running ma’am

That’s right. For you, why do you think

people are running? They want to exercise.

Aha, what else? They want to reduce their fat.

Yes, that’s one. Anymore reasons? Maybe they want to chase someone.

Probably yes, there are just many reasons

why we run, right? Yes ma’am.

How about this last picture?

Again, what are they doing? They are looking at the television ma’am.

So, it means what? They are watching ma’am.

Yes, of course.
C. Presentation of Lesson

Now, everybody read these words at the

board. Shooting, running and watching.

So, what did you notice about these words? They end in –ing ma’am

Okay, how about the other? What do these

sentences express? They are doing an action ma’am.

Exactly. So, what do we call to those

words that are doing actions? Verbs ma’am.

Very good class!

This verbs has something to do with our

topic today which is the verb
complementation forms.

D. Lesson Proper

Verbs have features or complements to

determine how many other words would
follow.
This means that verbs also needs a word/s
that will complement it. This is called verb
complementation.

Many verbs can be followed by different

forms,
Joshua and Jenny will you read it? a. An object
b. A verb structure; or
c. An expression that has an
information about the topic.
Let’s take a look at these forms or features
which may follow the main verb in the
sentence.

Dave, Dan and Dhen please read the first

rule. 1. Verbs followed by one object: the
direct object (DO) or the indirect
object (IO).
a. David asked Diana. (IO)
b. David asked a question. (DO)

In letter a, what is the verb here? “Asked” ma’am.

That’s right. And this verb follows a what? It follows the word “Diana”

Okay, so whom did David asked a

question? To Diana ma’am.

Correct, so in our previous topic we

discussed about direct and indirect object,
the question is what kind of sentence is
this? It is an indirect object ma’am

That’s right, why do you say so? It’s because the sentence answers the
question “to whom”.
Very well said. This just shows that the
verb “asked” follows an indirect object.

How about letter b? Where’s the verb

here? The word “asked” ma’am.

Correct. Is it a sentence with direct or

indirect object? It’s a direct object ma’am.

Okay, so what do you think the reason is? It answers the question “what”

Yes, that’s good. What is the indirect

object then? The word “question” ma’am.

Yes, so the verb “asked” is followed by an

indirect object.

Alice and Alaine, please read the second 2. Verbs followed by two objects: the
rule. indirect object, usually a person,
comes first before the direct
object.
a. Niel brought Jocelyn a
chocolate.
Again, what is the verb here in this
sentence? The word “brought” ma’am

Alright, the sentence follows the S-TV-IO-

DO pattern.
It says also in this rule that this verb
follows two objects, what do you think are The word “Jocelyn and Chocolate”
these objects? ma’am

Exactly. This proves that the second rule of

verb complementation can follow two
objects.

The third is that, ever body kindly read. 3. The verbs “explain, suggest and
describe” are not used with the
structure IO+DO.
a. Kriz, please explain your
decision to me. (DO+IO)
b. Can you describe a good
wedding party to me? (DO+IO)
c. Kenneth, can you just suggest a
solution to the problem.
(DO+IO)

Do these sentences follow the S-TV-IO- No ma’am.

DO pattern?
The direct object comes first before
If so, what then is the pattern? indirect object.

That’s right. Will you tell me those objects

in number 1 example? The word “decision” is the direct object
The direct object first. while the word “me” is the indirect
object.

Very good!

Joana and Joanney, kindly read the last 4. Verbs followed by object +
rule of verb complementation? infinitive, rather than by a that-
clause.
When we say “infinitive”, this is one of the
usual complement of a verb. It is used with
the word “to” for instance: a. CORRECT: I don’t want him
to go.
INCORRECT: (I don’t want
that he goes.)
b. CORRECT: We don’t allow
students to smoke in the
school.
INCORRECT: (We don’t
allow that they smoke in the
school)
