entry fee is $100. The event
is sponsored by the Village
Square Mall and steaks will
be provided by Snake River
Farms. Registration to par-

BLDG DISCUSSED
The USD 443 Board of
Education voted 7-0 at the
June 10 board meeting to
follow the path proposed
by District Administration
and Board Attorney Clayton
Kerbs, regarding the fate
of the current building that
houses the administration
offices.
First, the school district will
issue a request for proposal
making the public aware
that the building will be avail-
able for occupancy around
July 2020. This request will
include notice to potential
buyers of known building
deficiencies. Interested
parties will be requested to
provide a comprehensive
plan and proof of financial
ability to rectify the defects.
The Board will evaluate all
responses for a viable sale.
If no proposals are re-
ceived, the district will issue
another request for proposal
and if no bids are received,
the school district will list the
building for sale. Finally, if
there is not a suitable buyer,
the Board will consider
demolition or donating the
building. Before demolition,
the school district could
recycle and repurpose as
much of the building as pos-
sible.

McClatchy, the parent com-
pany of the Kansas City
Star and the Wichita Eagle,
continues to lose money
and miss expectations. In
May, the newspaper chain
revealed a net loss of $42
million, or $5.34 per share,
in the first quarter of 2019.
That compares to a net loss
of $38.9 million, or $5.04
per share, in the first quarter
of last year.
Despite the up-sell in Mc-
Clatchy-issued press release,
the Kansas City Star didn’t
blast its parent company’s
earnings on its website. “If
this were any other institu-
tion of comparable size or
cultural significance, it’s
financial crisis would be
on the front page daily and
those responsible would
be pilloried,” said David
Kensinger, a former cam-
paign manager for Gov. Sam
Brownback and U.S. Sen.
Pat Roberts. “But illustrat-
ing part of the problem, the

City Days Festival represents

to the local economy. Every
year, the festival generates
an average of $8 million to

omy. “Now we have more
lodging facilities in Dodge
City, twenty in total and it
also may guarantee that
more people show at the
festival this year,” Wittman
said. She pointed out about
one hundred thousand
people attended Dodge City
Days in 2018, and this year
more people are expected to
attend.
MEXICAN CHARRO IN
RODEO
For her part, Office Man-
ager of Dodge City Roundup,
Elaine Casterline, said this
year there will be a special
performance by Tomas Gar-
cilazo, a charro roper. “When
Tomas Garcilazo and his
horse stride into the arena,
the rope artist does so with
the goal of representing
the Mexican charro and the
American cowboy, rodeo
tradition and the heritage of
the West,” says the website
of Rodeo News. Garcilazo
is a Mexican native, now a
U.S. citizen too, who, when
he performs, likes to make a
lasting impression for future
generations. “It’s a mission
for me as an ambassador of
the charros to preserve that.
In modern day, everything is
getting lost, and we have to
be strong and keep our cul-
ture for new generations to
see the background and how
everything started,” says
Tomas, 50, living in Stephen-
ville, Texas.

Eagle are published seven
days per week, but the news-
paper chain announced an

Versus Eating Out
Aunque mis padres no
tuvieron riquezas materiales,
yo recibí una herencia rica
de mi madre: aprender a co-
cinar. Esta habilidad valiosa
me ha ayudado a sobrevivir
solo y a mantenerme salu-
dable hasta ahora.
Cocinar es una devoción y
también un arte saludable.
Tristemente, la gente hoy en
día casi no cocina en casa.
Lentamente han matado
el ambiente gozoso que
las cocinas de los hogares
tenían antes. Usualmente
la mayoría de los cocineros
hogareños eran mujeres.
La lenta desaparición de
la costumbre de cocinar en
casa es el resultado de más
mujeres dentro de la fuerza
de trabajo, y eso no es
nada malo; pero ese factor
ha producido la costumbre
actual de mucha gente de
comer en restaurantes o
en lugares donde se vende
comida rápida. Lógicamente
este nuevo hábito ha hecho
florecer más y más lugares
donde ahora la gente puede
encontrar comida a toda
hora.
Según los expertos en
nutrición, los niños son
quienes pagan el precio de
no disfrutar comidas nutriti-
vas, saludables, en casa. La
comida hecha en casa, casi
es cosa del pasado, desa-

el Nutrition Journal encontró
que 92 por ciento de las
mujeres cocinaban en sus
casas en 1965. Para el año
2008, solo un 67 por ciento
lo hacía. La parte intere-
sante de este estudio es

vez más hombres cocinan

Although I did not have
wealthy parents, I received
a rich inheritance from my
mother: learning to cook-
ing. This valuable skill has
helped me to survive alone
and to be healthy until pres-
ent.
Cooking is a devotion and
a healthy art. Unfortunately,
today’s people almost do
not cook at home. They
have killed slowly the joyful
environment that cooking
instilled in the kitchens. Usu-
ally, women were the major-
ity who did home cooking,
not men.
The decline in home cook-
ing is the result of more
women increasingly work-
ing outside home. But also
people have switched to the
habit of eating more at res-
taurants, eateries and fast
food places. This new habit
has fueled the flowering of
places where now people
can easily get food at low or
high prices.
However, according to
nutrition experts, children
are the ones who pay the
price of no longer enjoy
healthy-nutritious food at
home. Homemade food has
become thing of the past,
prompting the rise of obesity
and several kinds of illness
that are also undermining
the quality of life of millions.
The difference between
homemade food and out-of-
home food is enormous; at
least for me. When I cook my
own food, I choose healthy
ingredients and I have con-
trol of the sanitation prepar-
ing what I eat.
Cooking at home is also
a job that can take two
or more hours, and many
people hate to do it. They
like convenience, not nutri-
tious healthy food. They
sacrifice healthy food for
convenience. A study in the
Nutrition Journal says 92%
of women in the U.S. cooked
at home regularly in 1965.

the foundation was created,
they thought that establish-
ing a foundation that dealt
solely with the type of illness
their child suffered would
not beneficial to others.
“We decided to open it up
to help families with children
who have frequent visits
to the ER or hospital stays
that last longer than three
to four days,” they said. The
foundation is in the process
of getting its 501-3C paper-
work complete, which allows
companies to donate with
relieve the stress of dealing
with the day-to-day with a
medically fragile child.
They said the foundation
also aims to help with fuel
to destinations, hospital
stays, and, if necessary, food
for the stay and the simple
things like hygiene and
comfort packets. “Previously,
the financial aid for families
will be evaluated by a board
selected by the family to
look at each case and then
allocate funds accordingly
when an emergency arises,”
they said.
According to his parents,
Lenon was the first child
ever to be documented or
recorded with having two
types of mitochondrial dis-
ease. “The Lenon’s Foun-
dation wants to reach out
to the community and let
them know that they are not
alone; that there is someone
who cares and understands
and knows what they are go-
ing through.”

2019 will likely be the first
year in which women are a
majority of the college-edu-
cated labor force. According
to the U.S Bureau of Labor
Statistics, as of the first
quarter of 2019, 29.5 mil-
lion women in the labor force
had at least a bachelor’s
degree, effectively matching
the number of college-edu-
cated men in the workforce
(29.3 million).
This milestone matters for
women because educational
attainment is highly corre-
lated with income. Women
now comprise 50.2% of the
college-educated labor force,
up from 45.1% in 2000. the adult population (ages

(FDIC), Office of the Comp-
troller of the Currency (OCC),
and the Federal Reserve
(Fed) by Americans for
Financial Reform, the Center
for Responsible Lending,
Consumer Federation of
America, The Leadership
Conference on Civil and Hu-
man Rights, the NAACP, and
the National Consumer Law
Center (on behalf of its low-
income clients).
The letters urged the regu-
lators to “listen to the voices
of Americans across the
country who have spoken
out so strongly in opposi-
tion to high-cost, balloon
payment loans.” The letters
also pointed out: “When
bank payday loans were on
the market, two-thirds of
fees came from people who
on average borrowed 15 or
more times a year, many of
whom took out loans 10 or
more months a year.”
The Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau (CFPB)
released a proposed debt
collection rule today which
provides numerous gifts to
debt collectors with limited
new protections for con-
sumers. “We are horrified
that the CFPB’s proposed
rule will actually authorize
harassment of consumers
through phone calls, emails,
and texts. We are deeply
disappointed that the CFPB
failed to use this opportunity
to protect consumers,” said
Margot Saunders, an attor-
ney at the National Consum-
er Law Center.
“Seven calls per debt, per
week is simply too many,
especially when combined
with unlimited emails and
texts,” said April Kuehnhoff,
an attorney at the National
Consumer Law Center who
focuses on debt collection.
“A student with eight loans
could receive 56 calls per
week. The proposed rule
would also allow for critical
notice to consumers to be
provided by email or text
message without a consum-
er’s consent as required by
federal law. Other emails
and text messages have no
limits unless the consumer
opts out.”
Contact with a debt collec-
tor is a common experience
for Americans. In 2017, 71
million Americans, nearly
one in three adults with a
credit report, had a debt in
collection reported on their
credit reports. Nationally, the
percent of people with debt
in collection reaches 45% for
residents of predominantly
non-white zip codes.
In 2018, there were
475,517 consumer com-
plaints about debt collection
compiled by the Federal
Trade Commission. In 2017,
the top categories of law
violations in debt collection
complaints collected by the
FTC included “Calls After
Getting ‘Stop Calling’ No-
tice” (227,917 complaints),
“Calls Repeatedly” (210,238
complaints), “Makes False
Representation about Debt”
(192,704 complaints), “Fails
to Identify as Debt Collector”
(84,364), “Tells Someone
Else About Consumer’s
Debt” (39,760 complaints),
and “Falsely Threatens

Tesla has to stop relying on

progress, our products
are still too expensive for
most people,” he said. That

$44,000 and $70,500,
depending on the version
and options. Those prices
have allowed Tesla to make
a profit even while slogging
through “production hell.”
The company is now expand-
ing Model 3 sales to Europe
and Asia, again starting with
the high-end versions.
Tesla already cut roughly
9 percent of its workforce
in a round of layoffs in June
2018, but despite that,
Musk says staff numbers
actually swelled by 30
percent last year. By cutting
staff now and finding other
savings where it can, Tesla
can prepare.
Along with the job cuts, Tesla
is ending a program that
rewarded customers who
referred new buyers with
chargers and even free cars.
Tesla cut the price of all its
vehicles by $2,000 at the
start of the year, to offset
the fact that its buyers can
no longer take advantage
of a full $7,500 federal tax
credit.

ede producir inflamación en
los intestinos. Actualmente,
en Estados Unidos la gente
consume solo alrededor de
16 gramos de fibra diario, lo

25 y 30 gramos que son las

studies are necessary to
understand exactly how fiber
and the micro-biome inter-
act in humans. Currently,
Americans only eat about 16
grams of fiber—the parts of
plants that can’t be digest-
ed—per day. That’s way less
than the 25 to 30 grams
that’s recommended.
There are so many reasons
why, from fast-food market-
ing to agriculture subsidies,
but one contributing factor
is the slow death of cook-
ing, and the rise of the
restaurant meal. Americans
now spend more on food at
restaurants than they do at
grocery stores but restaurant
food tends to have even less
fiber than the food we would
otherwise eat at home.
One problem seems to be
that restaurant meals aren’t
typically loaded with two of
the best sources of fiber, un-
processed fruits and vegeta-
bles. A revealing study from
2007, in which researchers
interviewed 41 restaurant
executives, showed that
restaurants think fruits and
vegetables are too expensive
to feature prominently on the
menu, and “61 percent said
profits drive menu selec-
tions.” They also opposed
labeling certain menu items
as healthier choices, saying
that would be “the kiss of
death.”
So people like to eat out,
and when they do, they pre-
fer mushy, fiber-free comfort
foods. But that’s a pretty
dangerous road to go down.
“We’re beginning to realize
that people who eat more di-
etary fiber are actually feed-
ing their gut micro-biome,”
said Justin Sonnenburg, a
microbiologist at Stanford
University. The studies also
have found that those who
had the highest intake of
fiber or total fiber actually
had an almost 80 percent
greater likelihood of living a
long and healthy life. They
were less likely to suffer
from hypertension, diabetes,
dementia, depression, and
functional disability.

niveles de colesterol.
“Cuando planeamos este
estudio esperábamos que
la carne roja tuviera un
efecto más negativos en los
niveles de colesterol, que
